Cal and Red Feather

You both hear shouts, and see a motley troupe of humanoids moving very quickly toward you. At first glance, it looks like three humans and a child. Of course, you're both concentrating mostly on the fight before you to take closer stock of them than that. Outnumbered as you are, you pray they are friend and not foe!

Okay, Cal, going back to the end of the previous round (since I was waiting for what you decided before I positioned the hobgoblins for their attacks) - showing signs of uncharacteristic training and organization, the three hobgoblins who did not get bowled over each take a 5' step back and maneuver into flanking positions. The one you did knock over takes a Move Action to get back to his feet, which provokes an attack of opportunity from you. Now that you can see them closer, you can see that they are each weilding glaives, which do have reach. All three thrust at you with their glaives, and the archer that you wounded before is now in short range (but not point blank), and he now has a vendetta against you, so he's taking aim.

Flanking Spearmen: 1d20+10=21, 1d20+10=27, 1d20+10=18

Total Damage = 16

Archer: 1d20+6=13

Two of the spearmen hit, one misses. The archer's arrow flies wide. The other archer attacked and missed Red Feather in an earlier post.

I still need you to declare whether your Favored Terrain is Plains or Forest, because both will come into play in this particular battle. It won't matter for your Perception roll, since even without the +2 you would still have 34, which is plenty!

There doesn't seem to be a leader type among this group. The one who is probably their leader is the heavily armored one who ducked into the woods just a couple rounds after his band split into two groups. There are none who are dressed or outfitted as obvious spellcasters, but your Perception roll is good enough to notice that the one the human warrior overran earlier that is now getting back to his feet, is moving his hands in such a way as to suggest he might be planning a spell. Looking on the Cal and Red Feather battle map, it's the one in K-29.

You do have to roll to confirm even Natural 20's (as evidenced by the fact that some weapons require a Natural 20 to even threaten). Both of your strikes are successful crits. Go ahead and roll your damage twice for each strike, and add an additional 1d6 electrical damage for that weapon. He was already badly wounded from Cal's overrun, though, so in all likelihood, your first strike will kill him. K-30 is the only square that you'd be able to take your second strike on another opponent, though.

All in all, Forest will probably be better over the course of the adventure. You just happened to catch this battle out on the plain where it meets the forest, so it won't avail you against most of the raiders, but it will help against the lone archer that is moving into the woods this round.

Here is the updated battle map, as it looked at the end of last round. Your attacks (including Diego's) will actually happen at the top of this round, so you guys go ahead and tell me where you want to be on the map, including Barley, the hippogriff, and Hans' wolf, if it's doing anything but running for safety! To take her second strike against another opponent (if the first strike kills the spellcaster, which is probably will), Coraline will have to be in square K-30.

The Exchange

Tate and Amie, you both have initiative on the hobgoblins that just entered your glade. Since you heard them coming a ways off, your readied actions do not count against your initiative actions, so you both get the first attacks this round, first Tate, then Amie, then the Hobgoblins.

For the sake of continuity, your battle begins four rounds after Cal/Red Feather's battle begins (that battle is entering Round 4 right now, and yours is entering Round 1). You're almost directly north of where they are, the hobgoblins entered the woods to the southwest of your location, then had to angle across, so they marched six rounds to reach you, but the PCs in the plains battle will only have to move four rounds to reach you, once they dispatch their opponents.

Your first attack will not only kill him, but spit and roast him and serve him up with garnishment!

According to the description on page 131 of the Beta, all usual modifiers are applied to the multiplier for critical hits. The only thing that is not multiplied is additional damage die provided by special weapon properties like "shock" or "fire." So your critical damage roll would be [weapon base damage + weapon enhancement bonus + strength bonus + favored enemy] for each multiplier, then apply the 1d6 electrical only once. It doesn't matter for your first strike, because you overkilled him anyway. But your second strike, which was also a crit can go against the spearman that is in the adjacent square, so make sure you apply it on that one.

You wouldn't be able to make out what was being shouted, but you can hear the clanging of swords, shouts in general, the barking of a very large dog, and the screech of some kind of aerial beast. There really wasn't a whole lot of noise, though, until the 3rd round (they were mostly attacking with ranged weapons before then), so you're only starting to hear it about the same time you heard the ones moving through the woods toward you.

You've already used all your attacks for this round, but if you want to keep that roll for your attack the next round, you can. Also, Red Feather never stated that he was stopping his bard song, so you'll have an additional +2 bonus from that (which will also amount to an additional 4 points of damage in your crit this round, so you actually wounded him for 21). Also, since you're having trouble opening the map, do you want me to just choose which target Barley is tripping?

I believe that is only if you're attacking the same square, but I'll have to look into that. When you attack two different squares, you're having to shift your balance and focus a little, so I think that negates the extra attack. But I could be wrong.

Basically, the way Cleave works is that you're swinging your weapon in a giant arc that allows it to strike multiple opponents in adjacent squares before losing momentum. If there were at least three opponents in squares adjacent to each other and within reach of your weapon, you would get a third attack because of the weapon's Mighty Cleave property. Unfortunately, there are currently only two opponent's adjacent, so you'll only get the two attacks.

Okay, Round 4 (or Round 1, for the newcomers) actions for the big group:

1. Coraline complete destroys the hobgoblin spellcaster/spearbearer (attack detailed earlier).

2. Barley successfully trips the hobgoblin in square J-25. (Until you finish fleshing him out, I'll just assign him a CMB of +7).

3. Sevegny remains back from the fight, but clutches her holy symbol and begins her spiritual preparations, in case her healing talents are needed.

4. Diego blasts the nearest archer with scorching heat (attack detailed earlier).

5. Lucky Hans begins shouting excitedly, making funny animal noises, giving many of you the impression that he just isn't quite right in the head!

6. While Lucky Hans dances about in his whimsical manner, a great beast that resembles a cross between a horse and an eagle appears in the sky and swoops swiftly toward the same archer than Diego blasted a millisecond before. He strikes with two claws in his initial attack, hitting with one, missing with the other, for 12 damage, which finally kills it.

7. Red Feather looses another arrow at the remaining archer that is moving in on him, but his shot gets deflected by a tree branch.

8. Cal safely takes advantage of Clifford the Big Red Dog's (aka Barley) successful trip maneuver, and safely steps inside the threat range of both opponents to his left. He throws his entire weight behind a courageous strike, turning his blade into a wide arc that disembowels the prone hobgoblin and continues on its way to deeply gouge the side of the other one.

9. The Hobgoblin on Coraline, realizing it cannot strike her with its weapon at such close range, instead takes a 5' step back, then strikes for 12 damage.

10. Similarly, the Hobgoblin adjacent to Cal and Barley takes a 5' step back, and strikes at Cal for another 16 damage.

11. The remaining archer steps into the woods, dodging back and forth from tree to tree, then turns to fire again at Red Feather, just barely missing, as an arrow goes sailing over Red Feather's head, splitting a hair.

Okay, here is the new battle map for the big group. Since it's no longer just Cal and Red Feather, I've renamed it Plains Battle. If any of you three would rather be in a different position, just tell me where.

It's a new round!

Hans, your hippogriff will be able to fly from where it slew the first archer over to where the second archer is located. This is one of those situations where the rules are imperfect - it has a fly speed of 100, but it's not a perfect diagonal on the grid map, so the one-square/two-square rule would be too confusing to apply, so instead, I used the Pythagorean Theorem, and found that a straight line to the target would be just over 78 feet, so he can make it. That'll be on 14.

Coraline & Barley, Sevegny and Diego will all act before the hippogriff or spell, so whether or not you can get the hobgoblins in the Entangle without also getting your allies in it will depend on where they end their movements (right now, you can just miss your allies while getting all three remaining hobgoblins). Talk is free, though, so you can warn them what you're about to do, if you like, and that they'll need to not move any closer to the edge of the forest (or rather, not move even with or north of the two that are still in the open) if they want to avoid the entanglement.

Second attack with primary weapon 17 + 7 (BAB, Weapon Finesse) + 1 (Enchantment bonus) + 4 (Favored enemy) + 2 (Bard song) –2 (Dual Wield) = 29 to hit.

Okay, with his sneak attack, Tate kills one of the hobgoblins. Amie throws a small stone, which explodes quite noisily, deafening one of the adjacent hobgobs, but the other is unaffected.

Moments after the explosion, the surviving hobgoblins disperse and move into melee range with Tate and Amie. They are armed with glaives that appear to be of masterworked quality (they are reach weapons). Also, another hobgoblin, which you hadn't seen before, armed with a longbow, steps out from behind a tree and looses a shot at Tate, missing pretty badly.

Two of the hobgoblin spearmen move on Tate, while the third moves on Amie (the one denoted by a lower-case "s" on the map is the one that was deafened). The two on Tate thrust their glaives forward, one missing, but the other striking with a threat (crit is confirmed). Damage is 30, and Tate is knocked prone (special crit chart effect).

The last hobgoblin attacks Amie, striking for 11 damage.

But what looms even worse than the hobgoblins are the two previously unidentified shapes that you had seen moving further back through the trees. Two large, ghastly looking hounds burst into the clearing, making a beeline to Tate and Amie. They have red glowing eyes, and small flames lick from the corners of their mouths. One snaps at Tate, but misses. The other snaps at Amie, and does no better than its sibling.

That is the end of the first regular round of that battle. Tate can still drop his bow and draw his dagger, but he will not be able to regain his feet or position himself to threaten any opponent except the hellhound without drawing an attack of opportunity, unless he succeeds at an Acrobatics roll.

Not good. Not good at all. Those things came out of no where. Hmmmmm... fire.

They were badly out numbered. Under normal circumstances Amie would do something like Obscuring Mist or Sanctuary, except these Hellhounds could burn away the Mist and Sanctuary only helps on person. They needed some help. Amie draws an arrow and nocks in in the bow. then she raises them up as a holy symbol.

“Please Lord Erastil, send us some aid.”

I don't think clerics can cast Summon Nature's Ally, can they?

Actually I should have said Summon Companion, which is the same thing as Summon Natures Ally. Clerics with the Animal Domain have that power. My mistake, I was just reading too much and except for when you told Summon Companion IS Summon Natures Ally, its mostly called Summon Natures Ally and I went into auto typing.

Gotcha. However, if you check the wording of the Animal Domain power, it can only summon animals, not elementals, etc.

Hmm, that is a very good question. It does state that at 1st-5th Levels, a cleric with the Animal domain can summon one animal, as per the Summon Natures Ally I spell. But it also states that the spell equivalency goes up to II at 6th Level, and under Summon Nature's Ally II, a Small Elemental is available, whereas only animals are available under the first one.

I can see both sides - on the one hand, it is the "Animal" domain, and Elementals are not animals, per se. On the other hand, Elementals are the very embodiment of Nature itself. But ultimately, I think Summon Nature's Ally II is meant to be a guideline for Summon Companion, not that the latter is intended to precisely emulate the spell. I think I'll put this one to the forums, and get some feedback, because that is a very good question that could go either way.

DM, can we hear a pitched battle raging in the wood from outside?

You are able to hear the sounds of combat coming from deeper within the woods, yes.
