Diplomacy

Card & Board Games

I have never actually played a game of Diplomacy or even owned it. I have seen it played once and I was very intrigued.

Would it be possible to play it online like in a play by post?

There are dedicated web sites for this. Like:

http://phpdiplomacy.net/
for instance.

Be forewarned: If you don't like people ganging up on you and conspiring against you behind your back, this may not be the game for you. :-)

I had no idea.

So, you are saying it may not be for an over-sensitive, PC coddling, elitist, drama queen of a poodle?

There's a Toronto gamers Meetup group that was running a pbp Diplomacy game. It didn't last two turns before it turned into a hotbed of recriminations, hurt feelings, acrimony and unsubstantiated allegations.

Not my cup of tea. In general, I'm not a big fan of games where the goal is to make other players stop playing (e.g. Monopoly, Risk). When it comes to board games, Make Mine Scrabble(tm)!

Oh yes. Nothing like the feeling when three of your neighbors go to have a secret discussion in the other room into which you are not invited.

A fun game, but I know people I wouldn't play it with, ever.

I've seen two brothers get into a serious screaming match ove this game. I've also seen the same brothers get physical while playing FASA's Succession Wars; they were part Spanish, hot tempers and all. The younger one threw a glass ash tray at his older sibling.

For those of you who played that game, played at the right time, Contract Ends was one mean card.

I don't know if it's better or worse with play-by-post, where the discussions go on by e-mail and you don't find out until everyone attacks you simultaneously.

There is a call for players at the STAB group on the Triple Oak Leaf forums. They're looking to start a new game and on a player drive as many stayed behind on the yahoogroup. Diplomacy is a ton of fun. They even have the rules posted I believe (the ones made freely available online).
