Isawa Tsutakito and Bayushi Tenmaku square off for their duel. Both duelists bow, but Tsutakito seems oddly comfortable in this context, his shugenja training notwithstanding.
Tsutakito's Assessment, declaring two Raises for information - TN 15 (5k3=21)
Tenmaku's Assessment, declaring one Raise for info and one for concealment - TN 15 (5k3=16)
Tsutakito learns Tenmaku’s Reflexes and Void, Tenmaku learns Tsutakito’s Agility and Void. Both choose Void for the other. Tsutakito has the option to go first, but cedes it to Tenmaku.
Starting Focus Pools: Tsutakito 3, Tenmaku 2.
Tenmaku Focuses - TN 5 (4k2=14)
Tsutakito Focuses - TN 10(5k3=39)
Tenmaku Focuses - TN 15 (4k2=12)
After a few moments, the Bayushi loses his focus, and the Isawa draws like lightning.
The strike is clean and carefully controlled, and Tenmaku bows in acknowledgement of the Isawa’s victory.

Kakita Megumi |

Ninja-ed? Agility 2, Void 4. Your focus.
I was just saying you posted while I was making my post. I take forever and a half to make a post since I double check, edit, etc. so you got yours up first. Since Shisumo pointed it out I'll also learn your iaijutsu rank. You'll be using Agility for this contest (nice Void by the way). Shall I be using my Reflexes or will you choose something blind?
Megumi settles into her dueling stance placing her hand just above the handle for her sword. Her eyes are focussed on the Shiba while her mind blocks out all distractions. It takes a few seconds but almost imperceptably her left foot moves more toward her centre.
If Utsuro wants me to use Reflexes here's my focus, TN 5: 6k3=35 Focus pool: 4
PS. Shisumo, our Void recovers because of the night's rest correct?

** spoiler omitted **

Shiba Utsuro |

Since Shisumo pointed it out I'll also learn your iaijutsu rank.
Iaijutsu? That's a Crane thing, right? (0) - And to keep things flowing, please stay with Reflexes.
Eyes still closed, Utsuro takes a deep breath, and tries to concentrate solely on his opponent.
Void for Iai - Focus 1, TN10: 3k2 = 9,7,9 = 18

Kakita Megumi |

Iaijutsu? That's a Crane thing, right? (0) - And to keep things flowing, please stay with Reflexes.
All right, sounds good to me. Reflexes/Iaijutsu (Focus), +3 for focus emphasis which Shisumo pointed out; TN 15: 6k3+3=26, focus pool=3
Megumi stands ready, her body and mind just waiting for the right opportunity when her opponent falters.

Shiba Utsuro |

"Her stance shows that she will draw and strike in the typical Kakita fashion - from the hip to the shoulder. To counter, I should give her a smaller target."
1 Void for Iai, 1 more void for 1k1 ('cuz I can) - Focus 2, TN20: 4k3 = 5,5,7,4 = 17. STRIKE!
Utsuro changes his stance completely, attempting to present a smaller profile to the more experienced duelist. Unfortunately, the maneuver gives his opponent the opening she needs.

Kakita Megumi |

The young Kakita sees her moment to strike and doesn't hesitate, her body moving with instinct and skill.
Reflexes/Iaijutsu (Strike), +3 emphasis, two free raises to hit: 6k4+13=36 TN=15+armour; I believe I did that correctly but our Kobold Overlord will say for sure or not.

Well, you have an extra kept die listed, but you actually rolled correctly, so yes, that's perfect. You still need to roll damage - 2k2, should be, in this instance - but it's basically moot, unless you manage to kill him (which I must admit I doubt). And note, of course, that none of you are wearing armor.
Saburashi raises the flag to mark Megumi's victory, and he gives her a small nod of acknowledgment as he does so.

3 points - Isawa Tsutakito*

Amiko approaches Megumi with the same slight sneer on her face. Rather than pausing to bow at the starting distance, however, she approaches Megumi and speaks low into her ear, for her alone:
She then steps back, bowing low and smiling a sunny smile that looks like a wolf's grin, all hungry teeth.
Amiko's Assessment, calling two Raises for info - TN 15 (5k2=11)

DM Shisumo |

Tsutakito appears humble, almost diffident, as he prepares to face off against Ume for their duel. "Before we begin, Matsu-san," he says quietly, "allow me to express my sincerest condolences on the loss your Clan suffered last night. Let me say too that, as regards to that other matter, I never offered him any insult, nor wished him ill in any way. I hope you can understand that." He then bows and takes his stance.

As Ryuko and Chorotaku prepare to begin their duel, it's clear that Ryuko is taking the entire matter far more seriously than Chorotaku is - he grins broadly, offering her a sweeping bow that is clearly meant to be mocking, while she bows as little as possible and almost immediately settles into her stance, a grim expression on her face. Chorotaku sighs, as though he had been hoping for something else, before taking his stance as well.
Chorotaku's Assessment roll, with one Raise for info - TN 10 (3k2=6)
Ryuko's Assessment roll, with one Raise for info - TN 10 (3k2=4)
Both choosing blindly, Ryuko picks Chorotaku's Void and Chorotaku picks Ryuko's Reflexes. Chorotaku gets to focus first.
Starting Focus Pools: Chorotaku 2, Ryuko 3.
Chorotaku Focuses - TN 5 (3k2=20)
Ryuko Focuses - TN 10 (4k3=21)
Chorotaku Focuses, spending Void - TN 15 (4k3=15)
Ryuko Focuses, spending Focus Pool for a Free Raise - TN 20 (4k3+5=25)
Chorotaku Focuses, spending Void to buy another Focus - TN 25 (3k2=9)
The intimidating stance of the Hida causes Ryuko to delay her strike longer than she might otherwise, but she still sees an opening before he does, drawing quickly.
Ryuko Strikes, using FRs to hit - TN 20 (4k3+10=46, damage 2k2=12)
The hit is palpable, enough to make even the Hida feel it, but he just grins and nods in appreciation, while Saburashi raises the flag to signal that Ryuko has won. The shugenja-ko stalks off the field with the most minimum of bows once more.

In my defense it was late when I made that post and I was pooped after a long D&D session. Anyway, damage roll: 2k2+3=6, oh I think I'm close to downing you Utsuro :P
Her sword arcs through the air finding the Shiba's ribs though Megumi makes sure it isn't too painful. She bows to the Phoenix then prepares for her next match. As she is leaving Megumi pauses a moment to look back to the man she just faced.
"If you have the time Shiba-san, I would welcome a conversation with you after the tournament is over." Then she moves into position for her next match.
While Amiko approaches her body tenses a little in anticipation of the coming duel. The other Kakita's words take Megumi by surprise and her face contorts into a rather unpleasant frown after they sink in.
"We shall see Amiko-san." Megumi's response is clear and loud enough to be carried to the spectators, the bitterness when she addresses her opponent is palpable.
Awareness/Iaijutsu (Assessment) roll, three raises to learn Reflexes, Agility, Void; TN 20: 6k3+3=24 All right!
"Shall we?" She whispers to her opponent motioning for her to take the lead. Shortly after Megumi takes her stance keeping her hand poised just above her sword waiting to for the right moment.
I'll allow Amiko to go first, a bit of a gambit but if it pays off she'll be so furious!

Hida Nagatsuna |

I'm on the end of my seat for this Amiko/Megumi match up and not looking forward to facing either one should I succeed in this round

Matsu Ume |

Ume bowed curtly. "Thank you for your concern and kind words. I am well enough, and intend to see this tournament through." It was a bit wooded, and nowhere near rivaled the kindness she had been shown, but there was nothing more personal coming to mind.

Knowing that the Kakita's training most likely gives him an edge Nagatsuna takes his stance as a counter to Toru's own hoping to add to the man's uncertainty by showing that this uncivilized samurai from the Great Wall actually knows a thing or two about Iaijutsu. Not a sound can be heard as the two face off looking for the slightest weakness to show.

Burning void to focus and burning 2nd void for his roll or could he burn just one void for and additional rank of Iaijutsu (because it gives him Iaijutsu 3 which gives an additional focus?) However he goes about it he intends to spend all his void on this strike just not sure if I rolled right to his best advantage.

You could, in fact, have spent a Void to get that extra Rank of Iaijutsu and gained the extra Focus that way, but it would have left you worse off - because while you can spend Void to buy a Focus Pool and then separately buy an Enhancement for the roll, gaining a Rank in the Skill and gaining +1k1 to the roll are both Enhancements, and you have to be a Phoenix to be able to spend Void on multiple Enhancements for the same roll. The 5k3 was the best you were going to manage.
Toru Strikes, with 2 Free Raises from Focusing going to the strike (5k3+10=33, damage 2k2=12)
Toru sees the opening and takes it. His draw is smooth, but once again, as it was with Yukari, uncontrolled though to be fair, he has more justification this time. He strikes hard with the bokken, rocking Nagatsuna back, before almost sagging with released tension. Saburashi's face darkens again, though he again marks the young Kakita's victory, but Toru seems to only have eyes for the sidelines, and a beautiful but cold samurai-ko...
Hella good try there, by the way. I really thought you might pull that one out, and wouldn't have that stuck in the craw of the Crane!

Matsu Ume |

Ume forced her breath to a shallow, even rythm. So her enemy had no weaknesses she could make out. Now was not the time to worry about it. She rested her hand easily on the hilt and began to move to the sides, leisurely. Eyes firmly on her opponent.

You seem to be rolling too many dice - he called your Void, so you should be 4k2. Not that it matters for the TN 5 roll, of course, so we'll go with it.
Tsutakito tilts his head slightly to the side, almost as though listening to the slight breeze whispering past the two duelists.

Mittens, I forgot it again! It figures that I'm playing a Crane and I don't even know how to iaijutsu :P I suppose I'll learn remaining Void points though I don't think she used any. Since it doesn't matter much Amiko can also use her Void.

Yay, honour! Yum. Focus, TN 20: 6k3+3=28 I am so nervous to hit the "Roll the Dice!" button now.
Keeping a cool head under such intense pressure is a difficult task for the young samurai-ko. Thankfully the training under Saburashi was not wasted on Megumi and she maintains her stance peacefully enough though the observant eye can notice beads of sweat upon her brow.

This one was always going to be a crap shoot... You can strategize all you like, but when the contestants are as evenly matched as you two are, well...
Amiko, too, looks tense, the strain of maintaining her focus beginning to show as she adjusts her stance slightly, lowering her shoulder a touch.
Amiko Focuses, burning a Focus for a Free Raise - TN 25 (6k3+5=27)
Focus Pools: Amiko 1, Megumi 3

Kakita Megumi |

I want to win this match so badly; Void/Iaijutsu (Focus), burning Focus Pool for a free raise, Void for 1k1 (I think I can do that, can't grab my rulebook since I'm at school), TN 30: 7k4+8=48 Yes! I hope I can get the 1k1, I don't want to have to reroll that.
Megumi merely masks her apprehension under stoic reservation and barely moves. Her breath barely manages to escape her lungs though he focus is undeniable.
PS. Is the honour pip a full honour or 0.1? I can't recall at the moment.

Hida Nagatsuna |

Hella good try there, by the way. I really thought you might pull that one out, and wouldn't have that stuck in the craw of the Crane!
Well we were pretty evenly matched (me with my intimidate - him with his duelist training) but the fortunes favored him in the end (I was counting on him missing that TN 20). I just had a feeling that IC was laughing at me with all those high rolls on low TNs. None-the-less I am pretty happy that he actually made it a REAL duel with a Crane. His only hope to actually win the tourney (slim though it was) was if both Megumi and Ume lost this round. So now I have reversed and GO MEGUMI! GO UME! ;)

Matsu Ume |

Ume felt her hair stand on end as the duel continued to draw on. There was no weakness in her opponents stance, no hint of an opening. She had to just wait, restrain and focus.
Sorry about that. It was an honest mistake. 4k2 TN 15 - 17, 8, 5, 2 - 25. Could probably have used that one later ;)

The shugenja sways slightly, as though in a wind, but the movement is as flowing as the air itself, and leaves no opening.
Focus Pools: Ume 0, Tsutakito 1. Ume will have to buy her next Focus with a Void Point.

Kakita Megumi |

Thanks for the votes of confidence guys, this one's for you!
"KIAI!" Megumi's voice pierces through the air just as the bokken, so still just a moment before, whips out toward Amiko in a frenzy.
Void/Iaijutsu (Strike), 3 free raises to hit, TN 30 (I wish it were less): 6k3+18=53 Yes! Damage roll: 2k2+3=9
The sword arcs toward Amiko gracefully and though Megumi is the picture of years of hard training in the Kakita Academy she can't help but allow a smirk to cross her face when a distinctive thud is heard. "Who will destroy whom?" She whispers while returning the sword to its place at her side and remaining tense while watching her opponent extremely carefully.
Ouch, great roll for Tsutakito. While I want to see him get his gempukku I also want to see Ume go on. Go Ume!

Matsu Ume |

Ume breathed, tapped into every bit of strength she felt inside. She would not slip up. Would not fail. Would honor her ancestors and clan. To her, the blunt wood became a sharpened blade, for its touch bore defeat, and defeat final dishonor.
Despite the sun stinging her aching eyes, despite the unease of her motions and burning ache her muscles, she had to remain calm.
Hope this is correct. I would like to spend a Void Point to focus again, and another to augment the roll. 5k3 - 13, 8, 5, 5, 3 - 26. She's out of void now.

Incidentally, I'm not sure where Megumi is getting the damage bonus from...?
Amiko's expression is... well. "Thunderous" doesn't begin to cover it. "Murderous" is closer, but still lacks something. "Filled with apocalyptic fury" is pretty close...
At Megumi's words, her knuckles turn white on the bokken, and she starts to raise it; it is only Saburashi's movement, raising Megumi's flag to mark her win, that makes Amiko stop. She bows, a movement as stiff as her blade, and then steps close enough to whisper,
And congratulations! You have your first Sworn Enemy!

Actually, the strike is always Reflexes/Iaijutsu - so you should have had an extra rolled and kept die anyway... ;) Nice work! I would have lost a fair amount of money on this duel, were I a betting man. And, well, were betting on duels that you're GMing not extremely unfair. :D
The blow is harder than Ume means, and harder than Tsutakito expects, but it's a win either way. The Phoenix rolls with the blow some Void Point to reduce the damage, because why not?, but he is still rubbing his shoulder as he bows to his opponent.
Across the field, Ume sees Tamori Ryuko, watching Tsutakito with open glee. She nods once, the nod of someone who has had all her worst suspicions confirmed, and then turns away.

I had a pretty good roll where I needed it, and she a rotten roll where I needed it. The odds were stacked in her favor pretty high, that's true. But with her honor roll spend, and out of void, this is probably as far as she gets here. Unless I am mistaken, though, it might be enough. Only Megumi can get her, if she goes all the way.
Ume grinned from ear to ear as all the tension fell away from her. She had done it again - and the Shugenia had been an extremely potent duelist. Worst one she ever faced. She knew that if she encountered her again, it not only might, but probably would not end in her favor again.

Standings after the second round of the tournament:
13 points - Matsu Ume*
10 points - Hida Nagatsuna, Kakita Megumi*
9 points - Tamori Ryuko*
8 points - Kakita Toru*, Kuni Heihachi, Utaku Yukari
6 points - Hida Chorotaku, Shiba Utsuro
5 points - Bayushi Tenmaku, Kakita Amiko
4 points - Doji Keitomaru, Moto Tsuto, Shosuro Morito, Yoritomo Kagetora
3 points - Isawa Tsutakito
No pressure or anything, Ume, but if you manage to beat Ryuko, you win the Topaz Championship. If you lose, then Megumi can still potentially pull it out if she wins the dueling tournament.

Incidentally, I'm not sure where Megumi is getting the damage bonus from...?
Oh, well I really just looked at my combat stats to quickly determine my damage. My strike emphasis gives me +3 to hit on the strike so maybe... Kenjutsu (katana)? I'm not really sure what I was thinking! I'll correct it in the future.
A smiling Megumi is not brought down by the words of Amiko. She continues to grin even while she whispers hastily.
"If you were not so quick with your words then perhaps you would be moving on instead of me. You... Inspired me Amiko-san." To finish the response Megumi offers a generous bow to her opponent then moves on to her next match. While proceeding she steals a quick glance at Saburashi then looks around for the twin Princes.
Nice work Ume! One more and it's the two of us :)

The semifinals have arrived, and the crowd is beginning to recover its sense of excitement and expectation. In the crowd, commoners exchange hushed words and small coins; samurai lean forward in unconscious display of interest. Even the Emperor and his guests seem caught up in the experience, riveted to the intense drama playing out before them. Only Miya Shikan seems able to distance himself from the spectacle, watching with a slowly deepening frown.
