I need help with mechanics for a PC concept I have.

The Exchange

I want to play something like a martial artist who uses a shield and ringsword (longsword) and either light or no armor. I would like him to have a higher than average speed, be able to use a few other weapons, have some neat tumbling, and maybe do a couple of cool things that you see in martial arts flicks.
My problem is that a monk sucks for this as he would need to take 2 feats to be able to use a longsword and a shield and a shield would negate his monk's bonus to AC.
A ninja a way too fragile, although he has some cool Ki abilities that would help add the flavor, but he suffers from lack of proficiencies also.
I keep coming back to fighter. I could use a bunch of feats to help flesh him out and give the flavor I am looking for but I really don't have anything to make me a bit faster, or have that tumbling and Ki stuff that I would like.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Either a class I haven't noticed, some feats to help, or a good idea for a path of multiclassing?
I need help.
Everything is open book-wise, but I would like to limit to the SRD, PHB2, Complete Adventurer and core if possible..
Thanks all.

Well, if you want to go with a monk/fighter, I recommend the feat Whirling Steel Strike from the Ebberon Campaign Setting. It allows you to use a longsword with Flurry of Blows. As for the multiclassing, if it wasn't for the shield, I'd recommend you take more levels of Monk for the AC bonuses and other benefits. However, if you go with the shield and light armor, go with more levels of fighter than monk. You just wouldn't get enough benefit for more than a few levels of monk.

Yeah, but then I am shooting myself in the foot because my flurry will suck from taking more monk levels.....Hmmmm. I wish monks could use shields. I would just forget about light armor then. Also I lose flurry and fast movement in addition to AC bonus if I carry a shield.

The problem is that monk has a ton of restrictions in game that make it almost useless as a mix class. Wouldn't be so bad if it had a bit more flex in some other places, like weapon proficiencies and such.

Maybe the Swordsage from 9 Swords? I can't remember if they can use shields (I don't think so), but there are boosts and stances that allow them to do cool marital arts-like stuff. They get to add their Wisdom bonus to AC too. Otherwise a fighter/rogue with boots to increase his speed; it'll be cheaper to buy boots than to take a level of a class just to get a bonus to speed. Or maybe barbarian/rogue? Scout has tumble as a skill; make him an elf and you can use a longsword too, plus they have a bonus to speed at a higher level I believe.

Well, you can still use flurry of blows even if you have a sheild and light armor. Of course, that doesn't change the fact Monk sucks for multiclassing.

hmm, I'd check if your DM would allow you to give up Ranger Spellcasting and/or Animal Companion to gain Swift Movement...

Take enough levels of Ranger to gain the Swift Movement (probably 4)
(Urban Ranger might be more appropriate, even w/o Spells as differentiator),

and go mainly for levels of Rogue/Scout(Skirmish), MAYBE with a level of Fighter for the Bonus Feat,
though taking 6 levels of Ranger (for Imp. 2WF) could obviate that need (and get more skills).

If you like the Monk flavor, you could still say that you DID train with Monks at one point, and even use that as the flavor explanation for the Swift Movement, but not per se need to take the entire CLASS, since it seems like using a Shield does negate most of it's abilities.

You could then take Improved Feint (if Rogue) alongside Mobility...

(OR take one level of Sorceror with a half-decent CHA (12+), and know Expeditious Retreat. Take Rogue/Scout levels on top of that. You can still keep the Monk-dropout story if you want, you just don't need to waste a level on it.)

From the SRD----Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Monks are proficient with club, crossbow (light or heavy), dagger, handaxe, javelin, kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shuriken, siangham, and sling. Monks are not proficient with any armor or shields. When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, a monk loses her AC bonus, as well as her fast movement and flurry of blows abilities.

I wish I could flurry with a shield or light armor but I can't, not in RAW anyway.
