Silver Crusade

Then after securing rooms, they split out and wandered around the town. Bumbo of course followed one of the fighter PCs. The fighter decided to double back to see if Bumbo was following him, but the “idiot continued to the dog house.

The party has been all around the town looking for sympathizers, and missed spotting the mistletoe in both the Apothecary’s and the blacksmith’s shop.

Fortunatly they are not sure about Bumbo. They think that Bumbo could be a spy, or he might just be an idiot. Bumbo has simply noted their presence.

They stopped by the alchemy shop, their interest was piqued by the professional soldiers stationed out front. I had given them a sign and counter sign to recognize the sympathizers in the town, “ the sun will come out,” and “ and the rain will end” as the counter sign. Well the first thing that happens when the alchemist pulls open the door, is that one of the PCs blurts out ‘ the sun will come out”. Which was then followed by antoher quseiton, “ what are you working on?” “ something for the baron now are you going to pay or sit here and talk my ear off? “
They placed an order for sunrods. However the Alchemist is suspicious of them.

They are trying to decide what to do next. Given the parties composition, and lack of stealth options I have no idea how to get them into the castle.

If anybody has any suggestions that would be great. Thanks

I know this is very old post, but I have been looking at this adventure too and been a bit stumped on how my players when we eventually get to it, might get in as well.

When I ran for my PCs, the group decided to pose as mercenary adventurers caught inside the gates by the Andoran army and meet with the Baron.

Spoiler:
After meeting with Viarren the Apothecary and the blacksmith (whose name escapes me), they donned some old armor he had around (my group is a monk, wizard, scout, and ranger) and headed to the keep to offer their services to the Baron, for a price, in order to infiltrate his operation. They were very convincing, and the Baron took them on as enforcers, but only if they roughed up Viarren in order to gain his trust. They did, with Viarren's consent, then, over the next day, used their new position to weed out those loyal to the Baron before making their move against him.

My PCs took out most of the sympathizers, including the priestess of Asmodeus, very quickly and quietly. They burned down the First Light temple for a distraction across the town, then raided the Pact Hall and destroyed the alchemist's lab. That morning, Bumbo, who had been following the PCs (and who the PCs completely believed was on their side), turned in the group and sent soldiers to arrest them. Their cover blown, the group assaulted the keep.

From the front.

An enlarged, bull-strengthed half-orc monk, carrying a halfling transmuter and gnome scout on his shoulders and using a small wagon as a tower shield/turtle shell, rammed the main gate and worked their way through the mediocre Chelexian soldiers. Never having planned for this, the soldiers faltered and/or burned to death in a well placed fireball. Once inside the keep, they barricaded the door and brought the fight right to the Baron.

I got my revenge though. The Baron ran into the room with the devil and flesh golem and that battle scared my PCs more than I could have hoped. Once the Baron and devil were defeated, they realized they could not defeat the golem as well, so using the chains around, they spent several rounds running around the golem, tying it up in the chains. Despite the hits the golem got on them, the transmuter was able to keep the golem slow enough for the monk and scout to grapple it with chains and raise it off the ground, effectively trapping it until they could finish it off.

All in all, very creative ways to deal with the infiltration of the keep.

We'll see what my player's bard does in my one PC campaign. I think spamming charm persons is likely.
