Just a quick question - which I kinda hesitate to ask - is anyone's group planning on playing both 3.5/pathfinder, etc AND 4e? Let me clarify: my group has 2 DM's (myself and another), currently I am DMing AoW. When we are finished the ‘other’ will run a 4e campaign, and this will continue (after that I will most likely run RotRL 3.5). No one in my group understands the 'edition wars' or why they have gotten so nasty - So I was wondering are we the only bunch of 'neutrals' out there?

We're doing both.

No, but primarily because I only have the money for one edition, and I went with the one I've already spent over a thousand dollars on.
Yes like you I have spent approx $1k on 3.5e - the other DM has as well (maybe even more, he sunk a huge chunk on codemonkey) - I'll more than likely be spending a buttload more on 4e before I know it as well as more 3.5 stuff (of course Mrs Mayr will not be happy to hear that!)

right now, i can't justify the expense of purchasing the 4e books, and i'm not fond of it much anyway, but i do sit in on the occasional LGS game, just to give it a fair shake.
my group right now consists of my gf, our neighbor (both of whom are new to pnps) a co-worker and a friend from back in my 1e days. i'm just getting them up to speed with my bastardized 3x (with some pathfinder stuff i liked from the alphas), and i'd hate to try and get them to learn a system i don't even have down completely.

We do both, but not sure for how long.
At the very least, we are going to wrap up our Age of Worms as we are on the third last module. We had started Savage Tide, but are only three modules in. It will be up to that DM to decide.
We had an ongoing home-brew campaign, but we were only at level 5. The DM on that one has decided to change this one to 4e.
So quite possibly, after wrapping up AoW, we could be switching entirely over to 4e.

My groups are sort of doing both.
My Shackled City group is taking a break (sadly half way through Test of the Smoking Eye). We've played a little 3.5 (Revenge of the Kobold King - fantastic) and a little 4E (Keep on the Shadowfell - less fantastic, but did have a TPK) and a couple of one-off sessions. Not sure what way to go in the future yet (or if we'll return to Shackled City).
My second group is playing Age of Worms. We'll be finishing off Champion's Belt next time we meet, then we'll try a little fourth edition and then resume the AoW.

Kind of. I'm DMing a group that's a weird 3.5/homemade hybrid, and playing in an entirely different group that at last glance is going to start 4e when I get back. It's kind of disconcerting to have to know 2 entire systems...plus there's the 40K rules, Battle Fleet Gothic rules, Mutants and masterminds rules...out of curiosity, has anyone figured out how someone can know all these really complicated rules structures and systems, but can't seem to pass Calculus? it doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Yes we have a 4e Eberron campaign, STAP using 3.5 and then our version we're calling 3.8 (which merges BOXM, Iron Heroes, Pathfinder and some other stuff) which is being used for COCT and will be used for Ptolus.

I am DMING both, one a 3.p playtest using CoCT and the other a 4.0 group for my kids.
I am supporting both too, helping to write "classics" for the 4.0 NARPGA game day here in Atlanta. Although I am no longer executive Producer of Blackmoor (did my two years thank you) I am still helping those folks as they need especially as stat block monkey when times are dire.
Yes, I can level an Ogre Barbarian across 12 APLs/ATLs in under 20 minutes. WOOOT!

Yes.
While I feel that 4E has little to do with Dungeons and Dragons any more (save it - I ain't gonna get into it in this forum thread - I used the word FEEL - move along) I still think it is a decent system. I use 3P for my D&D gaming, and I am converting my WoW game to 4E (Now isn't THAT some irony.) I always felt that, while D&D 3.5 was a great system, it didn't adequately simulate the WoW feel as used in the PnP RPG. I think 4E is a perfect fit. It's a shame Arthaus/Swords & Sorcery have let the label founder so - and I don't believe they're planning to go 4E (I don't believe they're planning to do anything to be honest)

I respect this approach and think others should think of it. The 'Is 4e D&D?' debate aside, 4e is a good system. There are other system/genres it works well with. Would it work well with Traveller or Spycraft or others? Somebody who is a bigger geek than me will have to decide.
EDIT: Maybe I am already thinking this way. If I run 4e, I will use an Eberron campaign setting. I think 4e fits Eberron quite nicely.

I've been playing a Pathfinder with a heavy dose of my 3.5 and 3.0 books... as nature intended, along with playtesting of 4.0... just to try to force myself to be fair about that game.
My DM has been playing 4.0 as a player in a group and hosting one or two existing 3.5 games, and prepping the group to also play Pathfinder... he's more Pathfinder and one of the group members.. aka, the rich one, is a bit more leaning to 4th edition. But, they have an agreement.... the group member bought the DM the core 4th books as a grad present and the DM insisted on buying the rich member the Pathfinder book if he would give it an open view.
Beyond the one pro-4th member, most of the gamers prefer standard 3.5 and/or Pathfinder to 4th edition.
Granted, in all niceness to 4th edition, we've admitted that 4e (with the miniatures and stat cards of minis) is the best thing since Mageknight. We really don't even see it as D&D... yeah, its got the logo brand, but so does D&D Online.... or the series of games for the Commodore 64 back in the 80's. Or the D&D Miniatures game, for that matter....
4th edition is a very strong table top tactical game... but that's mainly its strongest points... it pales in comparison to the 3.x products in our group sessions, but it is a very good Mageknight successor.... thus, it does have potential to serve as a secondary game session for us, in the same manner that we sometimes play another game system or Magic: The Gathering alongside D&D.

Now that I will whole heartedly agree with... 4th edition is very much Eberron.... as a Forgotten Realms and home brewed campaign player myself, I don't really find 4th edition effectively working well with these campaigns... but it is very much Ebberon, and would work well with that flavor of gaming choice.

The 'Is 4e D&D?' debate aside, 4e is a good system.
I think so too. I don't think it is a GREAT system, but I think it is a good system. I hearken it to Warhammer 40K, which made LARGE changes to its core ruleset too. I like the current version, but I preferred the earlier one.
]There are other system/genres it works well with. Would it work well with Traveller or Spycraft or others? Somebody who is a bigger geek than me will have to decide.
I don't think 4E, as it stands, really lends itself well to other genres. I think you would see other gaming forms doing similar to Mutants and Masterminds - it's barely d20 any more. Some mechanics are still the same, but most only bear the same name.
As to my take on the Is it/isn't it, lets say I don't like Ebberon, I don't want the high fantasy approach, and therefore the flavor and feel of 4E is not what I want in my "D&D" game. On the other hand, high fantasy clearly has a spot on my shelf in regards to WoW RPG, and I think the high fantasy approach works quite well with it. Two different approaches to fantasy RPG, resolved by two different gaming systems. Its all a "feel" thing for me - so when I say 4E doesn't FEEL like D&D to me, its purely subjective reasoning - the worst kind out there. Which is why I don't want to get into debates.
PS - Sorry I ate your Snickerdoodles ...

I have to chime in and agree. 4.0 really suits some story types and play styles very well. 3.5 handles others better.
I have been toying with a Black Company (Glen Cook) style mercenary campaign in 4.0 I think 4.0 can handle a military campaign better than any system I have seen. I am not convinced it's going to work well in the Forgotten Realms.

Currently, my Thursday night group is working our way through AoW (we're about to hit 6th level) but this is our last 3.5 game. Wednesday nights have already switched over to 4E, so in about a years time I'll probably be 4E only.
Basically my story as well. I'm running Maure Castle in 3.5 to finish off my current campaign but after that it will be only 4E.
I have to say that the very existence of 4E is really playing havoc with my prep on this module. I need to do a lot of work to get it to really fit in with my campaign and provide the kind of continuing story theme for my players. In this case in particular I need to convert all the Seekers to a large group of Eastern style classes like Shukenja, Ninja's, Samurai etc. so that they can represent the evil Clan Scorpion who are trying to find the long lost Mcguffin in the ruins before the PCs do. But the idea of statting up a couple of dozen high level NPCs, always a tough job, seems monumental when I can see just how much easier the task would be in 4E.
Its pretty demoralizing - my players are going to go through these guys like a hot knife through butter anyway. All of a sudden it just seems so pointless to put in all this effort for so little return...sigh. Especially with another player DMing 4E on off weeks. The other players don't really notice the difference between our encounters but he stats up his cool bad guys in like 20 minutes while I grind away at mine for hour after hour.
Also some of the traps in Maure Castle are iffy. The module was made in 1E (as Uncle does not do any other edition) and the editors then tried to convert it to 3.5. Sometimes it just does not really work and I think I could get something akin to the 1E feel using skill challenges rather then static 3.5 traps - especially considering that these are not really traps per se. The rogue player may call foul when I hit the party with 1E style traps so thats a concern.

I haven't run a high-level game yet, so pardon my ignorance, but couldn't you pull those high-level NPCs from the 3.x DMG for stats, max out their hitpoints, then slap on some magic items and spells? Or download one of those optimized builds from WotC and other sites? Players, from my experience as both a player and DM, don't particular care about the nitty-gritty of their foes.

But he's using Oriental Adventures classes (of which the DMG does not have pre-statted examples).
I feel your pain.
So is the other DM converting 4E classes into some sorta OA equivalents? As for as I know, the official 4E OA supp won't be released until late next year at the earliest if at all.

No. The other DM is running a totally different campaign.
