Thought of a couple others (with my sisters suggestions)
Eye of the Tiger You know that the singer from that group is the singer on those Bud Light "Real Men of Genius" ads? I think they keep making the name of the character longer and longer to see if David Bickler can fit them all in and in tune.
and my fav (yeah right)
Vattnisse, I was going to put a Stryper on here, but couldnt choose which one...HA! Went thru a phase of them/Rez Band/Daniel Band/Messiah Prophet/and the comedy of Mike Warrenke/Isaac Air Freight while the PMRC was brainwashing my parents and the other parents in our school.
Alcatrazz Too Young to die, Too Drunk to Live! Wish there was a vid for "Wire and Wood", my fav song by them. Thought it was cool they put "God Blessed Video" on GTAViceCity! Yngwie J Malmsteen was really cool to me for a long while.

Dude, I remember that dude before that dude sold out to the pop over-lords. The Undertones were awesome. They opened for the Clash!

ProfessorAnthrax |

Wait a second, there, my friend. Having read earlier posts, it seems that several of Ye Fellowe Nerds are also Metalheads (yeah, i know, what are the chances). Having said this, Im thinking youre well aware that The Big 4 of Thrash (heck, ill throw in Testament and make it 5) were brought to us care of the mid-80s. For shame!! But seriously, it did my heart well to hear you guys mention the Ball and WARLOCK, of all bands. Sweet. Fur Immer? Great Doro stuff!
Speaking of Testament, anyone else enjoying the new one? I sure am.
The 80s seemed to be entirely about hair. And spandex and ugly suits. And drugs. But mostly hair. The end.

ProfessorAnthrax |

Dude...You want me to make sense of a song by a band that releases an album called Pink Bubbles Go Ape? Nope.
Andi Deris rules.

Agreed. It doesnt quite jump out at me a smuch as, say, the Gathering, but it IS nice to Alex again.
Im gonna go ahead and say that Chuck Billy has never sounded better, and im convinced that he is the voice of thrash. There. Ive said it.
ProfessorAnthrax wrote:Speaking of Testament, anyone else enjoying the new one? I sure am.The title track's great. The rest are solid, though there are few other real standouts. Good to have them back, though.

Beyond this, I can't remember much thrash on MTV - and, face it, that album was awful.
Headbanger's Ball was full of lesser lights, though. Decent tunes, but all that posturing... Those were long Monday nights.
Speaking of posers - check out the "Psycho Cam"...

![]() |

Not much thrash??
How about the Headbanger's Ball theme song?
Or this?
Or this?
Ah, those were my metalhead dayz....

Had a great experience getting a chance to jam bass with Anthrax after a record signing in Yonkers in '86. The NY Times was there and I got my name in the paper for saying something pithy. Pretty neat for a high school kid. :)
Had roadies pull me off of Mustaine in '88 at Sundance, once a club in Long Island.
Those really were the days. <sigh>

MTvUK might have been a little different from the US version. They had something called the "Thrash Trio" or something like that, but it came about irregularly, and always really late. It was also oddly programmed - I once saw this tune there. Good song, but...
The rest of the time, HB played stuff like Cinderella and Tesla, with an occasional Iron Maiden track. I used to marvel at how raw Tom Kiefer's voice was - but then I discovered this guy (obviously not on MTV!) and never really looked back.

drunken_nomad |

I think it was called "Triple Thrash Threat" in the US version, but I think that wasnt part of the show till after they lost the "Jennifer" couch and had the Rob Zombie-painted set (towards the end of the run).
Overkill, Nuclear Assault, Pantera, Morbid Angel, maybe even Deicide played during that part...which, IIRC, was the only time they would play the harsher stuff.
The rest was Cinderella-Nothin for Nothin (my fav). Yeah, I fell for the spinning guitar trick they did...still liked them after the Bon Jovi connection. Speaking of them, Heres The incredible hair of Jon n the boys singin Tokyo Road.
Remember when it was Cinderella's drummer's birthday and he paid somebody on Rikkis staff to pelt him with a cupcake on-air. Guess it was still frozen. Funny stuff.
Used to think that the beginning of Bon Jovis big hit was "Johnny just threw up on the docks" instead of ...used to work on the docks.
Havent actively listed to either band in several years, though.
Teslas going to be at this years Rocklohoma...and is one of the two bands Im sort of anxious to see (didnt get a chance to see them way back when). The other is reformed Armored Saint (with Bush!)

It is kinda funny to look back at Headbanger's Ball - me and all my metalhead friends would complain bitterly on every Tuesday morning about how lame the show had been the night before. Having said that, not watching it was never an option.
Rocklahoma sounds awesome. I used to cross the border and go to Sweden Rock every year - recent headliners include Europe, Whitesnake, Motely Crue, Twisted Sister and, my favourites, Saxon. Of course, now that I live in Arizona, that's not really an option anymore...

Trey |

Maybe they will have a Sweden Rock West? ;)
Sometimes it seems like U2 spent the first seven years of their career standing in fields all staring in different directions.

![]() |

I remember watching THIS live and thinking "those guys suck". Wonder whatever happened to them, anyway?

Trey |

One of the most alarming trends of the 1980s was the tendency for otherwise respectable artists to inexplicably overdose on synths. Not cool - leave that to the Germans.
Absolutely! I was just referring to this (using the same bad examples) a couple of weeks ago. Vattnisse wins the Brilliant and Absolutely Right Comment of the Day award!

Can't do classic MTV without this- Everybody look at your hands *Clap-clap*!.
I love that video, it IS my happy place.

Pete Apple wrote:I remember watching THIS live and thinking "those guys suck". Wonder whatever happened to them, anyway?lol, What the heck is that guy saying, anyway? ;)
You're not the only ones... I saw an interview with the other band members a few years ago, and the general consensus even among them was that they had no idea whatsoever what Stipe's lyrics were about.

I watched MTV for years and never saw this. Nope. Not once. Ever.
(over and over and over... why do I look at my hands still? why can't I get the ren faire from hell out of my mind.. the chicken people.. the chicken people... help me... help me...)
What? Oh sorry, lost my train of thought. How about those U2 guys! Hey, they were good!

Yesss! Zodiac Mindwarp! I'd forgotten about him - good job!
I'd never seen the After the Fire clip before - and I won't be seeing it again, either. Booh! I still blame my awful high school German grades on Falco. How's a kid to know that "meine funky Friends", "der Rest den coolen Gang" or "b'cause er hatte Flair" isn't quite how good German is supposed to sound?

After the Fire should have gone to prison for that.
Talking like Falco? If I was your teacher, I would have given you a good grade for sheer cool factor.
Too much at stake
Ground beneath me shake
And the news is breaking

Trey |

Funny, I didn't like this song that much when it came out. Guess I was more used to straightforward rock and roll from the Who. On the other hand, I liked the video with Pete and the robots a lot.
Looking at them now, I think I like them both about the same.

![]() |

Rawk! A dose of transatlantic stuff - the original and the cover version.
Speaking of covers - who hasn't done a version of "Word up"? I like the Gun version the best myself - I've always had a soft spot for Gun, as they were probably the best outfit outta Scotland since the Young brothers took off for Australia and deserved more success than they got. And, yes, that means they were better than Sheena Easton.

drunken_nomad |

Bought that Trust album because of the Anthrax cover. Didnt understand a friggin french word...Trust also did "Sects", which Anthrax covered and that song still freaks me out just a little (mostly because its about Jim Jones!)
So, heres a couple other early Mtvvids I remember
Stacey Q-Two of Hearts ...hmmmm.
And keeping on the 'heart' theme-
Quarterflash-Harden my Heart ...a friggin bulldozer!?!?!!
and how about
Tom Petty and the Gypsy Woman-Stop Draggin My Heart Around
How about Andy Gibb-Shadow Dancin.
OK. My parents played a lot of country records when I was a lil tyke. You ever hear Flying Burrito Brothers-Six Days on the Road or Christine's Tune?
and now...back to the METAL!
Sound Barrier-Rock Without the Roll Rone's posting of Combonation made me go looking around in my old cassette pile and I found this band on a Certron 90 minute cassette. I gotta see if they are released on cd...
Another unlucky band. Tuff Luck-Up and Down Trash rock from LA!!! Still love this cheesy stuff!
EXCITER! A friend of mine had the "Long Live the Loud" cassette and we played that and Queensryche's "The Warning" over and over while playing Wizard's Quest.
Remember that game?
And hey, how about this one that helped establish the PMRC? W.A.S.P.- F&*& Like a Beast I guess this one is not safe for work...

![]() |

My mom liked this lady a lot, while my dad survived the 80s courtesy of Elton John and the excellent ELO.
How did we get this far without mentioning either of these three gals?
Don't remember Wizard's Quest - I wasted my late nights playing Castle Wolfenstein and cranking the Cowboys from hell. Punch it!

drunken_nomad |

Zodiac Mindwarp reminds me...how about Sea Hags-Half the Way Valley
he also reminds me of this guy. You get into Mandy Lion and WWIII-Time For Terror?
oh and Wizards Quest was a board game...more or less a fantasy version of Risk with a bunch of cool bonus rules.
Speaking of that, you remember the board games that came out in the same series as Axis and Allies?
Broadsides and Boarding Parties was the one that I owned first. Then I got Conquest of the Empire and then A&A. Didnt get Fortress America or Shogun till college a couple years laetr.
Sorry...early Mtv. Forgot about Ms Turner. Loved her in Beyond Thunderdome (but I havent seen that movie in a hundred years, so it might not hold up).
and though this isnt Mtv per say--Alice Cooper doin "Schools Out" with the Muppets had a HUGE impact on me! (also Lynda Carter singin "Rubber Band Man"...though not for the same reasons.)
"Muhnuh munuh", and "Witchdoctor", Kenny Rogers "The Gambler" and John Denver "Grammas Feather Bed" made Muppet Show a pretty early introduction to music. And SOLID GOLD/American Bandstand were a couple other shows giving exposure to different bands to me so long ago.

![]() |

Ooooo... Seahags! I had some friends who were seriously into them and the Quireboys. It didn't mix well with my love for RevCo, though. Nice Mandy Lion link - Mandy's the man.
Mad Max beyond Thunderdome has fared about as well Indiana Jones and the temple of doom. Make whatever you will out of that...
I hated Fortress America. Hated, hated, hated it. Stupid orbital laser cannons! Not a big A&A fan - gameplay's too linear. Shogun was OK, though.

waltero |

Ah the 80's... I was always partial to the British New Wave stuff rather than Metal. MTV had some late night show that featured clips from the latest craze out of England or Scotland, or Ireland.... Never thought I'd end up seeing this music on VH1 classics. Anyways, here's a few oldies but goodies

![]() |

Deep, existential question - who's the ugliest man in rock? Is it
* Any member of Whitesnake, but particularly Adrian Vandenberg?
* Any random member of the Scorpions?
* 1980s Rob Halford (not to be confused with 2005 Rob Halford)?
* Post-Permanent Vacation Steven Tyler?
* The singer of REO Speedwagon?
Or someone else? Lemmy doesn't count, and neither does Rick Ocasek or anyone in AC/DC - that would be too easy.

drunken_nomad |

I think that goes to Grim Reaper
See You In Hell!
or maybe anybody associated with GG Allin ...not safe for work or pretty much anywhere...

waltero |

You guys have mentioned some uglies. The guy from REO Speedwagon has gotten less ugly over time and looks kinda normal now, while Steven Tyler has not aged gracefully. Nobody mentioned the undead Keith Richards?
While not frightening to look at, I nominate these guys as the fugliest-teethed duo in music. Even the poor girl in the vid has some malalignment issues. Just how expensive are braces in Sweden?

![]() |

Oh, no - the gas face! Ouch!
Another rather unattractive dude would be Cronos, who combines unfortunate stage outfits with the biggest forehead in music. Mantas is an ugly guy in his own right, but he is pure eye candy next to Cronos.
As for the lack of Keith Richards references - we're still operating inside the "Classic MTV" frame of reference. Otherwise these guys would win without breaking a sweat - they are hideous on so many levels.

![]() |

And a slight diversion away from ugliest rockers.....
to songs from awesome movies that got me to buy the band's album.
BTW, the Hidden is by far one of my favorite movies ever.

Trey |

One thing to always remember, if you you and your friends get picked up by a hunky trucker rescuing you from your boring jobs at an all-girl gas station, and Boss Hogg and a NYC cop give pursuit, throw banana peels.
Cause you're, like, Banana-rama. Get it?
