Slade wrote it.
Quiet Riot had a massive hit with it.
But here's a fun version worth checking out. It was my favorite of the three:
Mama's Boys take on Mama We're All Crazy Now

Don't know how I got this far without mentioning these guys. What a great launch on this song.
I wanted that car so bad it physically hurt. Instead, I had to settle for a Ford Taunus. :(
These dudes had pretty decent hair.
True. But so did, um, these guys.

the amazing Bowie's DJ
I can't argue with this point: Bowie is amazing. Though I have a feeling this was never played on MTV, I still suggest taking a look at this video. It's such a fantastic song, and a great performance of it.
As for MTV... I never had it! Only MuchMusic here in Canada, which when I was younger played a lot of Canadian rock, and now, has become pretty much exactly like MTV in the sense that they don't play music.

Bowie rocketh!
I won Bowie's cover song contest ("best overall" category) back in 2000 with a coffee house take on Quicksand.
Anybody for a fun chee-z metal anthem from Canada?
Helix with Rock You
Nugent's Tied Up In Love (his studio singer on this track is a Lou Graham Foriegner soundalike)

Aren't you thinking of "Cum feel the noize"? Good song, though.

That is excellent! You happened to cover my favourite Bowie song (not so coincidentally, it's also off of my favourite album).
As for the cheez, I had no idea that song was Canadian! Now I hang my head with shame. And rock. You.
As for the 80s, whenever I think about them, this is what immediately comes to mind.

I can dream about the eighties. Wouldn't want to go through them again though.
Speaking of hair, This Guy, was the co-first MuchMusic VJ. (Canada's MTV). Big, big guy hair. I remember him hosting The Power Hour. Now he's an anchor on CNN. Go figure.

Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Like Cum On Feel the Noize was yet another of Slade's deliberately misspelled songs that Quiet Riot had a hit with. Here's Quiet Riot's version
QR owed their hits to Slade, with the exception of Metal Health.
Here's Slade's original as well.

Dan Hartman died in the last decade. He was the other half of Edgar Winter's Group's songwriting. Dying to Live is a favorite. Freeride as well but that has Rick Derringer all over it.

Hunky Dory is my favorite as well. He doesn't know exactly what he's doing yet and he's all over the place. A perfect moment in time, sez me.
My own favorite Bowie track is also on that album. Bewlay Brothers.
Listen to how McCartney/White Album 'Oh you pretty things' looks structurally. Bowie was trying everything.
And Life on Mars... come on... perfect song. He was in the running to translate a Jaque Brel song which wound up being Anka's My Way. If you listen to the musical changes between the two songs, they're quite similar in build.

Even so, I can't imagine they played Bryan Adams more than MTV did. It seemed like he was on at least once every two hours for like a decade.
Yeah, I imagine it couldn't have been much worse at his height, however, I will wager that we had this constant overflow of Bryan Adams for longer than anywhere else.
Don't get me wrong here, he's good. But he's not "hey, let's hear some Bryan Adams every hour, on the hour" good.
As an aside (as well as the random fact of the day): Who does Bryan Adams share a birthday with?

I never heard his other stuff. In fact, like a lot of others, it was years before I realized he wrote/performed that song rather than Eddie and the Cruisers. Every once in a while, I come across it still credited to them.

At this point, I have to remove my hat for the late, great Kevin DuBrow.
As a side note, I saw on Quiet Riot's wikipedia entry that Randy Rhoads was one of the founders of the original Quiet Riot, which broke up when he got on board the Crazy Train, and whose name got picked up by the later act after Rhoads' sad demise.
But here I am getting all grim. As Casey Kasem would say, "F$~~ing ponderous, man."

Much respect.
I have a bootleg of Dubrow's album with Rhoads from back when the band name was Riot. Dubrow honestly can't sing at that early stage in his career but it still sounds like him... just off-key. It is the demo tape from hell but I'm happy to have it.
Kevin was driving Randy around one day and Randy talked about leaving Ozzy after the tour to get deeply into jazz guitar. Alas, death can really mess up your plans. Let's light a candle for Randy as well.

The Bowie/Eno/Fripp trilogy are probably tops for me.
Incidentally, I thought it was hilarious that Nick Lowe named one of his EPs "Bowi."

Ah Eno's tryptich, was it? Lovely songs coming out of Germany those years. While mixing it they invited people from the street up into the studio to listen to the album. Free wine for everyone. Good times.

Agreed, it's just such an interesting album to listen to. Every song is different yet really compelling in its own way. Songs like Queen B~*+~ are just fun to listen to, and then the delightfully strange Andy Warhol... It's so good.
And yeah. Life on Mars. Yeah. In fact, I think the way that track was used in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou was really what made me love that movie as much as I do.
And, since I would feel guilty not throwing out some sort of video in this thread:

One of my earliest MTV memories: Red Skies at Night. The Fixx were supposed to play the local community college at one point, which was a pretty big deal, because I was not living in a large town, and I was so stoked.
Then the show got canceled. I sometimes feel "And that's when things started to go horribly wrong..."

The Jade |

One of the first videoclips, maybe the first true, was Ashes to Ashes, by David Bowie.
There should be an additionnal Deities & Demigods, with just Bowie. He is a pantheon just by himself.
That song used to just level me. It was my favorite for decades.
"I'm happy... hope you're happy too..."
two other quick n early Mtv vids.

Also: Five Years is another fantastic Bowie song. I recently found out that Mott the Hoople's All the Young Dudes (also written by Bowie) is connected to Five Years, they both have the same message at heart. I thought that was pretty cool.
I remember back when I first heard The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, the bass drum beat from Five Years had me right away.
As for some videos; I would love to post some, but I can't at work!

When Mott the Hoople was breaking up and said it wasn't going well enough, they called their peer, Bowie, to tell him the bad news. He told them to hold their horses, hung up, and wrote All the Young Dudes on the spot. He then demoed it out (I have the demo) and presented it to them... a song written so specifically for Ian Hunter's vocal talents that although Bowie was a monster during the Mott recording of the backgrounds (That's all him), Ian's rendition actually sounds better than Bowie's for the song. That's good songwriting, when you know the artist and can specifically work a tune so... fine tune.
It kept the band together, and kept the glam rock scene alive and thriving for another year. Bowie was smart enough to realize that if he was the last guy left holding the glitter pants he'd marginalize himself, so he kept the scene strong and got out on top.

Speaking of Casey, is this REAL?!?!
Hated Dubrow's attitude at the time...but somehow tolerated (and even loved)Diamond Dave's narcissism...following him rather than the VH brothers after "THE SPLIT" (you know...) You see Dave rag on Zakk Wylde on the reunion show?
but they all got along for Stars
Oh yeah (apologies to Kool Aid Man, glad to have you aboard). That vid reminds me of quite a few.
[Queen of the Reich! When is part 2 going to happen? They did Mindcrime 2. I played this EP about 1000000000 times in a row when I got it.
Got to get ready for work. Be back later with Y n T, Priest, BOC, and Rough Cutt (dam! I played that record over n over way back when), Night Ranger...but not Sister Christian, and the Giuffria!
And Seldriss, thanks for reminding me...Jeff Lynne and ELO
oh and Johnny Cougar...try to NOT think about the ditty bout Jack n Diane! (Still LOVE the Scarecrow album!)
and to end this round, how about PAC MAN FEVER
There was a song from back then that the chorus was more or less the tarzan yell...which I cant spell out here phonetically. Listerine bought it out a few years ago for their blue stuff when an anthropomorphic bottle swung around on a vine. Who was that?
**EDIT**Couldnt let it go. Heres the commercial, but I know it was a riff from a 80s Kajagoogoo/like band
**DOUBLE EDIT**Tarzan Boy by Baltimora Dam! Now I HAVE to get ready for work. Stop reminding me of vids of my youth.....LOL

Has anyone posted this one yet? The hosts of the Norwegian version of "Queer eye for a straight guy" recorded their own version of it... Gack!
Thought I had it in an earlier post, but Heres the remix from '03 after the singer had an operation.
Hated Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengence at first, but came around for Electric Eye and the vid with the dude in the bowler hat's head exploding!!
A fun vid (not sexist at all, right?) by YnT Summertime Girls
"Right. Twelve degrees." Blue Oyster Cults Veteran of the Psychic Wars Cool! Didnt see a link for "After Dark" or "Joan Crawford", that whole record is great!
Greg Giuffria was in some bands (Zebra/Guiffria), but I didnt get involved till House of Lords Love Dont Lie because Gene Simmons produced it... Thought that was cool. Hmm.
And my favorite Night Ranger vid (got to give Brad Gillis props for filling in for Ozzy after Rhodes passed, to apparently hateful fans)
Dont Tell Me You Love Me
And Im finishing this one with the Red Rocker I Cant Drive 55!!!!

I don't have links to songs, maybe someone can dig those up.
I remember watching that first night when MTV came on... I think I was a Freshman in High School. Oh jeez... talk about the "MTV Generation" Anyway, my best friend and I stayed up to watch. Video Killed the Radio Star! Then there was a Pat Benatar song. I don't remember the rest but it beat the hell out of Midnight special. We stayed up watching until 6am or so playing Divine Right(by TSR!) and watching. Made for a long night so we walked down and got donuts and just stayed up.
I remember the Eurthymics "Sweet Dreams" very vividly. It was pretty innovative at the time. The cow was.. odd. Same for A-Ha and "Take on Me", especially as I was a comics fan. Safety Dance.. over and over and over...
Other bands that come to mind:
Duran Duran (who wouldn't really have made it without MTV IMHO)
Def Leppard
Culture Club
Madonna
ZZ Top!
And we really enjoyed the Weird Al stuff.
I remember having a discussion on Nina vs. Martha along the lines of Ginger vs. Mary Ann. I was always a fan of Martha, myself.
I remember watching the "Young Ones" first on MTV.
Later in college I was more of a "120 minutes" guy. Really enjoyed that and discovered some good music via it. TMBG! Woot! Early REM. (although I heard the new album is ok)
Anyway, that's the stuff that comes to mind. Thanks for starting the thread, good memories.

Tuned in on launch night! Very cool, Pete. Thanks for the eyewitness account :-) . I was always a Martha Quinn fan myself, but here's a shout-out to Nina, J.J. and Mark. I think that was all of them?
Since Nomad mentioned the Red Rocker, who I also recall for his Three Lock Box (no shortage of leather miniskirts in that one), and I linked "Red Skies at Night," let's keep the red theme rolling with Red Rider's Lunatic Fringe.
I didn't realize until I looked up the video for this song that the singer is the same guy who did "Life is a Highway," many years later, which I also like a lot.

The Jade |

I didn't listen to a lot of Pomo/later dubbed alternative... but I really liked the Psychedelic Furs. Here's Heaven
And here's The Ghost in You
And Love My Way
And Pretty in Pink
A decade later Richard Butler moved to a group called Love Spit Love and I really liked their first album.

For me, MTV was a staple in college. We stayed up, drank a lot of beer in the dorm room, and watched Headbanger's Ball. The best stuff was in the last hour, BTW. I remember seeing Metallica's first video EVER on Headbanger's Ball.
When I was younger, though, I LOVED staying up to watch Night Flight on USA. I saw Herbie Hancock's "Rock It" there. I saw the extended videos of "The The", which for me is the hallmark of my 1980s music. And I saw Dynaman , a wonderful parody of the granddaddy of Power Rangers. In fact, I still have 3 episodes I recorded on an old VHS tape. Great stuff.
NOTE: For the video....Dynaman starts at 0:50 in.....
