One of the previous adventures "Castle Shadowcrag" (OpenDesign2) was nominated for an Ennie (and deservedly so).
Just a little sign for the quality of adventures available for the basic members.

I've joined the last 3 projects (as a basic member) and been very happy with the insights into the process as well as the finished products. I'd probably buy a $25 book by Baur anyway, so why not join early and see the process? I'm still bummed I missed the very first project, Steam and Brass (Brass and Steam?).

Hey All!
Sorry for not chiming in here today. We got our apartment exterminated for bedbugs so I was out for a looooooong time in hopes of avoiding The Cancer.
I appear to have missed an emotional mini-drama in the absence and a chance to get mud slung in me eye for no particular reason I can think of. Oh well, thanks for hanging in there folks, and thanks Wolf for answering questions and concerns today.
Now that the bedbugs are gone I shall be on point!
MILK OF THE GORGON forevers! :-)
Yeah, I am personally super excited about the patrons being able to weigh in on MANY MANY facets of the adventure and design.
I do a lot of one-on-one improv theatre...which rocks, and I'm viewing this in much the same light. I have a plot in mind, a villain designed, and loads of ideas, but I'm ready to change them or even chuck em based on patron input. Power to the people.
What I am really excited about exploring in this adventure is - murder mystery, bringing the terror/chills home to the players, a very unique and interesting villain and interesting ways to interact with/face off against said villain, also a cabal of shadowy criminals (who may or may not be monstrous in their own right...patrons decide), and fun takes on adventure strutcture that is a little more loose than an encounter by encounter breakdown. I want the players to be able to interact with the adventure more than just plow through it (though that is one way to interact with the adventure). I hoping to tackle at least some of the above in the Design Essays and really get into how to develop tension, and rising action to a climactic showdown with a villain.
Should be good fun...you know as scams go. Seriously though folks thanks for being onboard. I'm really excited about the entire process.
Nick
P.S. Tim - scope my other adventures besides Hook Mountain Massacre my man. I used to be the anti-pop culture guy (Swords of Dragonslake - an adventure about a theatre troupe's dramas and tragedies?).

I got one of those to store photos online. It's free. Do you need some kind of premium LJ account to be a part of OD?
Nope! Freebie account works fine. You just need one to view Open Design's posts, and leave comments. Completely free.
Premium LJ acoounts are really only useful and or necessary if you want to keep a personal online journal of whatever.

I'm not sure what you get for Premium either, except a few perks that I can't figure out anyway. I've been LJing for 3 years on free, and it's done well for me. (I'm about to pony up out of sheer guilt though.)

Nick...as if i don't have enough on my plate already, i was thinking of asking if you'd let me run the thank you game for your hellfire staff. I know you wont have a voice, and thought it might be fun if you got to play a game.
but i dont want to steal your thunder, and i know everyone would rather have you.
for some reason. : }
That my friend, is a deal.

What Nick said. Thanks! :)

Just hit the subscribe button - getting excited already!
Weird thing was, someone on LJ has my name :(
Hope it's not me with an old email address! That would suck bigtime.
Do you remember how hard it is to think of a new forum name at short notice? Bah and humbug! I ended up going for eatmygonks, it seemed appropriate.
Still, I'll sit back and wait for wolfie to send me details then?

Nick, Wolfgang,
As someone who has purchased thus far every Logue adventure he could get his hands on ("Chains of Blackmaw" got me hooked), I felt like I owed an explanation for lack of patronage. It's nothing personal--on the contrary, like I said, all Nick's stuff totally rocks. But I'm one of those guys who never parks next to a beat-up car. Who checks his pockets for his keys BEFORE he walks out the door. Like, Nick could have a bad guarana reaction next week, and the adventure would never be written! Now, $25 for a double-length adventure from Nick Logue is a fair value, even without the perks... but it's not, to me, worth a gamble. If I could get online, read reviews of the finished product, and then purchase it through Paizo (I have to admit that I share Herr Guennar's mistrust of PayPal), I'd be all over it. But I just can't bring myself to do the "patronage" thing.
For those eager for the experience, I'd encourage them 100% to participate. More Nick Logue adventures sold = more of them written in the future, so from purely selfish reasons I hope the project is a smashing success! Anyway, best of luck, gentlemen, and sincere apologies for this lapse in support.

make 'em human!
Easier to interact with (besides humans have families, monsters have broods?)

Did I miss a bit about the levels covered?
That has not been announced yet. In the past projects sometimes that was set ahead of time and sometimes it was decided based on patron request.
In OD1 (Steam and Brass) - Patrons requested it be for levels 6th, 8th or 12th. (which in my opinion was a waste because we lost a lot of wordcount to variant statblocks)
In OD2 (Castle Shadowcrag) - It was designed for 10th level (with scalability)
In OD3 (Empire of the Ghouls) - It was designed for 9th level (with scalability)
In OD4 (Six Arabian Nights) - I think is for a variety of levels, but could be wrong.

I was for awhile.. a premium member, but I never kept my journal up so I downgraded.
I believe you get-
-The ability to journal from anywhere, including your phone or mobile device, and get updates.
-You definitely get more avatar icons right away.. Then the longer you're a premium member, the more icons you get (they give you a couple every so often, or you can just buy more. I know some ladies with hundreds)
-You get to link pictures directly I believe, storage space, instead of using Photobucket or something similiar
-Dedicated server, instead of the public one..
To anyone not familiar with LJ, does not having a premium account hamper your ability to participate in this Open Design project? Not in the slightest.
Open Design has a premium account, the participants, frankly don't need one.
If you want one, do it for yourself and your own journaling needs.

Arabian is comprised of 6 side trek adventures, that can be either stand alone or strung together into a mini-campaign. IIRC,it spans levels 3 through 10.
Yep. Slight correction. Six Tales of the Arabian Nights final adventure count is six short adventures (each of which can easily be completed in a single night by a group), running from levels 5-10.

I asked him about levels, specifically, in the podcast interview. He indicated that there is not a level range decided on yet, but that there would be with patron input.
He did indicate some preference, however, for not a real high level, as murder mysteries get harder and harder as more and more powerful divinations become available.
It's all in the interview. There's a bit more talked about than that, iirc, but I don't want to try and remember and then be wrong in such a public way in front of such a distinguished audience.

Ha! No worries Kirth! Though I'm sure we'd all benefit greatly from your keen insights and feedback, you DO NOT have to explain ANYTHING for not signing on for this project.
You're still a rock god of RPG madness in my book Kirth, and it shall always be so. :-)
Besides...I've got PLENTY more books coming out this year. You don't even know my man. Hopefully I can hook you with one of those.
Pirates meets Cthulhu mayhaps?
Vampire Overlords Who Rule with Jaundiced Fists?
You name it, I'll be slinging it out there this year. More news to come.
Thanks for the well wishes with Gorgon my man. I'm looking forward to tackling it, in fact the brainstorm-o-rama is already heating up over on Open Design, and I'm starting with the villain...in my opinion the single most aspect of any solid RPG adventure. So far the patrons are kicking out AMAZING thoughts on the subject, and I'm enjoying getting blog-o-licious on the topic as well. Big posts on villainy coming up next week.

For those of you who don't know Jeff or the Tome, all I can say is find out about it and him! Jeff is a great guy, who is incredibly cool to rap with about all things (including D&D) and his show is awesome, including reviews, news and interviews with people FAAAAAAAR more important and active in the industry than little ole me. Check him out at www.thetomeshow.com

Alas, I can't access Livejournal from China (the Great Firewall) so I'm not sure if I'm gonna patronize (lol) again. I think I posted this at the beginning. They must believe in freedom of speech or something. Of all the nerve.
What I didn't post before was that when I wrote to Wolfgang about my problem he wrote back immediately and offered me a refund on my Arabian Nights donation--a right decent fellow, he is.

Could not afford a Patron Membership right now, but I subscribed for the Basic stuff.
Urban murder mistery + Logue + mature atmosphere is a real killer combo.
Heh, this shows how new I am to D&D in general, I still have no idea who all these people you name are.
Well, to avoid the obvious smartass remarks, I don't recognize who these people are. :P

Nick Logue is a scurrilous hack of a writer. But he's an okay DM. ;-)
He's also delicious in the sack. I never knew I could have multiples until I was with him. Puuurrrrrrrrr.

Why thank you. While this response was unexpected, I'm absolutely certain that this knowledge come in handy some day.

Fear not Mythril! You haven't missed too much as of yet! Actual SERIOUS DESIGN begins on Monday probably, but even after that you can read all past blog entries and catch up pretty quick. Nothing goes away, so if you join the party late you still get to read everything, and there are TONS of wild and crazy decisions left to make on this puppy if you are very interested in being a part of the outlining/design process.
Get you some BLOOD!

I'm now a "basic member". Just signed up! Unfortunately I don't have the money right now to go further but I'm mostly looking forward to the end product.
A short story of my signing up. :)
I've mostly stuck with official material from WotC up to now but recently discovered the absolute wealth of material out for D20. Funnily enough, the first two things I really purchased from Paizo (besides my Dragon subscription) were Crown of The Kobold King and and Fortress of The Stone giants and I loved them. So when I stumbled upon Open Design on Wolfgang's site and saw Nick Logue's and Wolfgang Baur's names attached to this particular project AND listened to the podcast I could not say no. More than that, I love the idea of it being a collaborative effort from a group of people who love and play D&D regularly. Then there's the fact that there's a very talented designer writing it...
Good luck Nick. I'm really looking forward to all of this.

I just have a few questions to poke at the people on Paizo with. Not sure if I should sign up for the forums on the site and ask them there.
I haven't recieved my email yet, which is fine, no rush. But I was wondering if it mentions anything about a ship to address? My PayPal verified address that is attached the payment is not my regular address and I'm not even sure if I can recieve packages there.
Also I know a lot of the older projects are gone and done with and can't be bought anymore but what about more recent ones like Arabian Nights? Could I still sign up as a patron for that project and get it? Also wondering the same for Empire of The Gouls. Both are still donate-able on the site it seems.
Aaand that's all!

According to Wolfgang, you have until 01/31 to purchase either Empire of the Ghouls or Six Arabian Nights in pdf form. After 01/31, only SAN is available to patrons of the current project, Blood of the Gorgon. Print options are extra, available through lulu.com to patrons. Again, same deal. Empire's run was "extended" through Jan 31 basically.

I just wanted to say that I got my email today and started puttering around the LJ site for Blood and I am really enjoying it. The participation level from Nick is a lot higher than I expected. He's right there taking feedback (and names! kidding) and responding daily. So far - Open Design - is WIN. ;)
