A runner arrives for Gengar, Jessa and Shantare at the Rusty Dragon some time in the afternoon. Whether you are up or not, you are are roused and summoned to the cathedral. The smell of smoke on this end of town isn't as strong as it is up on the hill, but it's still there.

Some effort is spent trying to figure out how to find Mitnal, before he wanders in the North Gate and bumps into the very runner sent to find him and summon him to the cathedral.

Male Human of the Shoanti Shriikirri-Quah Tribe Barbarian 3

As soon as Mitnal realizes he is not in any trouble and that, in this case, he is being treated as something important he says to the runner "Yes, I'll come. Here carry this." and hands over much of his stuff.

After her late breakfast, Jessa is found sitting in the common room once again reading through her books. She has a copy of one of the more recent Pathfinder Chronicles this time, looking through it for any references on goblins and their habits. 'If I still plan on searching Varisia for Thassilonian ruins, I'd better know a little more about such creatures in case I meet them again,' she muses.

When the mayor's runner arrives, she notices the lad conversing with Bethana and grows a bit concerned when she sees the halfling woman point in her direction. Once the boy explains himself to Jessa, she nods. "Of course, I'll come right away..." She also helps him locate Shantare.

Before leaving the Rusty Dragon, she takes a piece of bread. A quick summons to Blackwing soon has the raven perched on her shoulder, taking bits of the offered bread from her hand. "I wonder why we're being asked to see the mayor?" she whispers to him.

The bird ruffles its wings as if to shrug its shoulders. "Worried about goblins still?" Blackwing suggests.

When they arrive at the cathedral, Jessa can't help but pause to survey the square, remembering again those frantic moments from the goblin attack. Her eyes are naturally drawn to the spot where one of them had leaped upon her back...and there, the place where she'd ended its life with her dagger. Some small part of her also considers the two goblins she enchanted. 'Did my hypnotic suggestion work well enough to make them flee Sandpoint before doing any further damage?' she wonders, 'I certainly hope so.'

When they finally gather with the mayor, sherriff, Kinmorn and the others, she greets them all as positively as she can. Blackwing, meanwhile, looks on with great curiosity, remembering Mayor Deverin from his reconnaissance the night before.

Male Human of the Shoanti Shriikirri-Quah Tribe Barbarian 3

When Mitnal arrives at the cathedral and sees his friends, he grows a bit embarrassed at having foisted his bags on the runner. "Here, lad, give me those," he says taking his bags back.

The other day, while in the Rusty Dragon he saw some of the wealthier patrons do something unusual and decides it must be a custom. "For your troubles ..." he says to the boy with his hand cupped, fingers downward, and when the boy stretches out a palm Mitnal tickles it. Turning from the lad unsure if he got that right (especially seeing the surprised and disappointed look on the boy's face) he walks over to his friends.

Male Dwarf Rogue 1

Gengar follows the messanger. He is still a bit heart-sick over the fire damage. After the near death experience and the battle over the nobleman, he joined a bucket brigade and hauled water almost all night. Stangers shoved buckets at him and he in turn swung them toward unnammed eager hands. It never seemed enough but the fires were finally defeated.

Much damage was done, but the new church was spared. Gengar has a stronger sense of home here than he has ever had. And when he arrives at the cathedral, he sees his family of friends. He hugs Shantare and Jessa. He bows deeply to Kinmorn and Zathus. He ponders the odd little halfling a moment yes, I recall seeing him during the battle and healing the hurt, he's ok. the dwarf thinks and smiles warmly.

When Mitnal shows up, Gengar gives him a hug, too.

I am home with my family.

Once you're all assembled, the mayor speaks.

"I want to thank you all for coming. I know you haven't had much rest, and I'm sure you're still spent from last night. But I had to meet the saviors of Sandpoint in person."

Something about the way she says "saviors of Sandpoint," with a hint of a smile at the corners of her mouth, makes you wonder just what she means.

"Certainly, many rose to the defense of Sandpoint. Our militia, such as it is, did their duty admirably and well." A shadow seems to cross the sheriff's face for a moment, then is gone. "Others paid in blood. Spilt and spent here in the very streets of their home.

"But I wonder how many more would have died in the streets, were it not for the six of you. Aside from Sheriff Hemlock, no other members of the watch were there to repel the goblins' cavalry charge through the North Gate. It is my understanding that none of you save Brother Kinmorn are from Sandpoint. Yet you stood your ground, and showed such courage," she says, looking at Shantare and Jessa. "Such courage. As if you were one of our own.

For a moment, the mayor looks very tired. Then she takes a deep breath, gathers herself, and continues.

"I want to thank you for what you all did last night. There is still much work to be done. We'll be holding quiet ceremonies over the next several days, burying those we lost. But I wanted to meet you all, and personally extend my gratitude for what you did."

Jessa looks around at the others who have assembled before the mayor, unsure if anyone intends to reply, and even less certain of her place to speak on behalf of the group. Yet, rarely at a loss for words, she does indeed speak up.

"It didn't really feel all that courageous at the time," she somberly answers, "It felt like we were all doing what we could just to survive the assault...and help everyone around us do the same. But, for what it's worth, I was happy to help. I'm sure everyone else feels the same. Thank you for your kind words. And we certainly regret the losses suffered by Sandpoint."

Blackwing punctuates her statement with a soft squawk of agreement.

"I'm given to understand that you let yourself be nearly run down in an effort to stop the attack," says the mayor, looking right at you. "You could have been split in two. Or is that not how it actually happened?" She gives the sheriff a sidelong glance as she says this.

The sheriff, for his part, gazes admirably at the squawking bird, giving it a nod of approves.

"Oh she did it, all right," the sheriff says. "I thought she was dead for sure."

Unfortunately, the spell required getting a whole lot closer than I would have preferred," she explains, "Thanks to my friends...and the good sheriff...I escaped the thick of the fight. Yesterday was pretty busy, and I'm about to run out the door to work, but I'll finish the conversation with the mayor tonight.

"Merriment may have brought us here, but blood and sweat have tied us to this place and to one another. Your thanks are welcome but not required, fore I have gained more than was lost. I have also found in myself the capacity to return more than was taken." Gengar says with nervous confidence while glancing at everyone in the room.

"Mayor, Sandpoint is my home if ever there was such a place." the dwarf says somewhat softly.

"Mayor, Sandpoint is my home if ever there was such a place." the dwarf says somewhat softly.

Mitnal looks at the dwarf with increasing respect. His speech was just the kind Mitnal liked -- the kind with few unnecessary words. But home ... That was a thought. The dwarf already considers Sandpoint his home.

'Where will home be for me? Sandpoint holds some attractions but there's something missing," Mitnal thought before making up his mind. 'Tomorrow I start looking for a south bound ship or caravan.'

"YAWWWNNNN!"

'Or the day after tomorrow,' he thought sleepily.

"You're certainly all welcome to call Sandpoint home," the mayor says. "And I think some, at least, will sleep safer at night..."

She is interrupted by the arrival of Naffer Vosk, who lurches over tho Father Zantus and whispers in his ear. What he says to Zantus clearly alarms the priest, as the expression on his face grows graver moment by moment.

"Are you sure," he asks the deformed gravedigger.

Vosk nods.

"That is very disturbing," Zantus says, speaking mostly to himself.

"Would you care to share," asks the mayor.

"It would seem... It would seem that, at some point over the last day or so, someone has snuck into the graveyard and made off with Father Tobyn's remains."

The mayor sits silent for a moment.

"Show me," she says.

Naffir Vosk leads the entire group out into the boneyard to a hastily dug hole in the ground. Quite a few small, bipedal tracks are visible in the piles of freshly turned earth. Other tracks lead away from the gravesite toward the North Wall.

Vosk points north. "I found a ladder propped up against the wall, over where the trees press thick against it."

The mayor turns to face the group. "No one is to breath a word of this to anyone. Sandpoint is small enough, I expect it will get out sooner or later, but none of you are to help it along. Nor are you to confirm or deny anything on this matter. You are utterly ignorant of the matter. Am I understood?"

"I'm not sure I understand the importance of the situation. Was this Father Tobyn someone important?" Jessa replies, her curiosity causing her to immediately ask questions without even realizing she hasn't agreed yet to keep the matter secret. As she speaks, Blackwing flutters from her shoulder to a nearby gravestone for a better look at the freshly turned earth and small tracks as if to begin his own investigation.

"Who would have tried to rob such a grave?" Jessa asks, "The goblins? That seems odd. From what I've read of them, it seems like an awful lot of effort for minimal gain on their part to dig up such a body. So there must have been a different reason if they were involved." She looks at Kinmorn, Shantare, and their new halfling friend, Ruano. "Can any of you make sense of this...?"

Male Human Cleric 1

Kinmorn stands for a moment in utter amazement. He registers Jessa's question but it takes him a moment to answer, for his thoughts are suddenly blank.

"Father Tobyn.... he...he was priest here until the fire. He was... he was a good man."

"Who would do this?" says Kinmorn, not really expecting an answer. And then with more force, "Surely no one from Sandpoint would desecrate Father Tobyn's grave!"

"These footprints are small," Jessa points out as Blackwing hops to the ground to stand beside one, "And, given last night's events, the goblins seem the most likely culprits based on the evidence."

She then frowns, moving past the mayor to kneel closer to the hole in the ground. "But like I said, goblins wouldn't do this on their own. I mean, why go out of their way to loot a grave when there's so many easier things at hand during the festival? Unless, of course, they had a particular purpose in mind? And they would have to...wouldn't they? I mean, why select this particular grave over any other? This would seem very deliberate."

Jessa looks back at Kinmorn, Father Zantus, and the mayor. "Father Tobyn couldn't have meant anything to a bunch of goblin raiders," she says, "But he must have meant something to someone else. And that someone must have used the goblins and their attack to dig up this grave. But why? Was he buried with something valuable? Did he carry some vital secret with him to his grave?"

Jessa realizes everyone's letting her ramble on again and she becomes embarrassed. Who was she to investigate the matter anyway? Sheriff Hemlock would surely handle things. "Well...um...anyway...those are the questions I'd ask...if, you know, I wanted to figure out who did this...and why..." Her voice trails off into an uncomfortable silence as she hopes she hasn't offended the good sheriff.

If there's someone practicing such in Sandpoint, I'd be more than happy to root them out. After all, there's few who can escape a good diviner. "Do we know they picked this particular grave on purpose," says Kinmorn brightening a bit as this new thought strikes him, "It could just be happenstance. I don't even know if goblins can read."

"Still, no matter what they wanted a dead body for, it cannot be anything wholesome."

Ruano walks over to the tracks and examines them. He may not be a tracker, but he has identified footprints before. He encourages Spot to try to get a scent from the soil.

Ruano takes 20 to 'push' Spot into performing the track trick. Since he can handle Spot as a move action, taking 20 takes one minute. Then they both make Survival checks: Ruano to identify the tracks, and Spot to try to track by scent.
Dice
Ruano: 1d20 + 9 = 5 + 9 = 14
Spot: 1d20 + 5 = 18 + 5 = 23

As the others examine the tracks, Blackwing takes flight again. This time he heads towards the north wall, which Vosk indicated earlier. He lands among the branches of the thickest stand of trees. Spot easily picks up the scent of the invaders and traces it from the wall, where the ladder still stands, to the gravesite and back. In a straight line. No wandering around. No dithering. No "should we take this one, or that one." The invaders came over the wall and made a beeline to Father Tobyn's grave.

As Shantare and Ruano examine the tracks themselves, they confirm what is plainly visible to everyone -- a group of goblins snuck in here to steal these remains. About twelve of them. As they examine the fresh turned earth by the grave side, they both spot one tread in particular that gives them pause and makes them exchange a look.

There, in the muddy earth that once covered Father Tobyn is his rest, is an unmistakable print, deep and clear. The goblins that stole the body were not alone. They were assisted by someone human-sized and shod in well made boots.

Or are those just stories for children?"

He pauses. "Was the late Father buried with anything important? Perhaps it wasn't the body they were after. Relics? Money?" Another pause. Goblins don't read, but whoever filled those boots and ordered them around might. "Books?"

Do the boot prints match the bootprints Ruano saw by the cattle?

Still, as you say the words, they don't feel right. You look again at the print. Though it is not unheard of for bugbears to wear shoes or boots, this print doesn't seem to match the descriptions you've heard. The foot shape isn't right.

Father Zantus sighs. "He was the priest before me. He served as the spiritual leader of Sandpoint for a long time, and was deeply loved. It seemed for a time that he alone held our community together during... the late unpleasantness." Zantus pauses.

"He died in the fire the night the old church burned down." He looks at the grave next to Father Tobyn's. "His adopted daughter, Nualia, perished that night as well."

The marker, a simple stone covered in dirt from the disturbed grave next to it, bears the name Nualia Tobyn, and a simple inscription:

Her beauty in life was unmatched. May her peace in rest be the same.

Kinmorn's anger falters. He remembers lookiing at his longspear differently that morning, thinking that it had been responsible for the death of goblins. They had been living, thinking creatures and their lives had ended upon his blade. Death was not a foreign concept to Kinmorn, it was part of the cycle of life. But there was a difference between killing an animal for food and killing a sentient life. Anger should not be allowed to cloud the judgment. If death must come to the enemies of all that was good then it should come. But not out of anger. Never in anger.

"Yes," says Kinmorn to Mitnal, "We need an appropriate and measured use of force. We need to find out where these monsters came from. We need to find out who leads them. And then we need to do what is necessary to protect the citizens of this community."

"That may take some time," Jessa states, "Goblins can squirrel themselves away practically anywhere. Assuming Mayor Deverin or Sheriff Hemlock sends scouts to search the countryside, it would still take days to find the right tribe. In the meantime, someone should try to divine any clues left behind...and by that, I mean here at the gravesite as well as the outskirts of town, to determine who led these goblins here and why."

She gestures towards Shantare and Ruano, and finally Kinmorn. "We have eyes and ears aplenty for a mundane examination. The gods themselves have been known to answer divinations, too. And I have my own modest means of arcane magic to look beyond the obvious. Together, I believe all of us could aid Sandpoint in determining the true extent of this goblin threat...as well as the meaning behind the removal of Father Tobyn's body.

She pauses for a moment and then continues. "I also believe it's in our own interests to do so. Another goblin attack with the right amount of focus from this well-heeled leader of theirs could prove our undoing. So we all have a part to play in this. The stars just seem perfectly aligned for it. And I believe I'm understandably attuned to those sorts of things."

"Yes, I agree." Shantare says to Jessa. "Finding the goblins would take a lot of time, time that we don't have. Also, we have no idea how large this Goblin tribe is. We might be occupied for a long time while the city is left undefended. It looks like there are few people who can actually fight."

"Yes, but finding and killing goblins is never a waste of time!" Gengar says. "My worry would be that the little buggers are being lead by something even more sinister in light of our recent discoveries." He points to the empty grave.

Gengar wanders around the cemetary a bit reflecting on the past couple of days. Then he remember his visit to Madam Mvashti and all the blood rushes to his cheeks. During his fortune, the goblin card had been drawn first. There was something about a burning house there too. Very interesting. Could she have actually foreseen the future? What were the other cards?

Some lovers or siblings on a beach, a goat-devil thing, a greedy guy with a poor house, and a butterfly. What does it all mean?

Gengar walks directly over to Kinmorn. "Hey, do you believe people can see into the future? Does your god give you that kind of power?"
