crit? (1d20+4=11, 1d6+2=5)

no crit, i assume

No critical but the first goblin dog still goes down, leaving three more.

Mitnal moves forward, wading into battle, even though he does so somewhat inneffectually.

Invisible Castle is still up. Do you need dice for Christmas Daniel? I'll tell the kids. ^_^

hah, it's true i don't have any dice these days

I attack the dog attacking Mitnal, bringing my sword down right in the middle of its body.

attacking (1d20 +7=27)
crit (1d20 +7=24)

damage (1d8 +3=8, 1d8 +3=7)

"Come on Mitnal! It's like piking fish at the market!"

Eugen moves in past Mitnal and slices one of the goblin dogs in half. As he does so, he gets a glimpse of the small goblin that led them into this open area of the fort busy trying to climb up the outside wall of the yard.

Need a post for Kenzo.

Haven't seen Bill post in awhile. Let me know if you want sub-Kenzo to respond.

Yeah - go ahead.

Male Human Monk 3

Kenzo presses through the doorway behind Eugen and steps over the slain dog's remains to attack another.

Melee attack with longsword... 1d20+3 = 10 to hit

But the savagery exhibited by his fellow companions keeps the next dog a little more cautious and Kenzo can't quite seem to pin it down.

Goblin Dogs in the Courtyard - Round 2
Goblin Dogs - Initiative: 20
Gyorgy - Initiative: 12
Kenzo - Initiative: 12
Jeslara - Initiative: 12
Mitnal - Initiative: 11 ...-5 hp
Eugen - Initiative: 10

The two remaining dogs continue to press their attack against the two warriors in the front, Eugen and Kenzo.

Goblin Dog attacks Eugen: (1d20+2=16)
Goblin Dog attacks Kenzo: (1d20+2=4)

Only Eugen's armor protects him from the dog's teeth. Meanwhile Kenzo easily avoids the dog who is busy avoiding his sword.

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

Jessa mentally directs her dagger to attack the dog facing Kenzo.

Melee attack with hand of the acolyte... 1d20+3 = 19 to hit
Damage... 1d4+2 = 4 hp

"Bad dog...rat...whatever!" Jessa shouts.

Jessa's dagger slices the side of one of the dogs.

Meanwhile the goblin climbing the wall seems to be stuck about halfway up.

Goblin Climb Check: (1d20+2=7)

Eugen seems to be doing well so I attack the dog that is giving Kenzo some hassle. (1d20+4=15, 1d6+2=7)

Male Human Fighter 1

"Can anybody hit that goblin going over the wall?", I ask, looking around for a stone to throw.

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

"Clear the way and I'll take him!" Jessa calls.

Gyorgy's blast drops the dog attacking Kenzo. The dog snapping at Eugen remains to be dealt with.

Mitnal, suspecting he's being mocked, brings his hammer down heavily on the last goblin dog. His klar is poorly aimed however.

1d20+3=20, 1d8+2=5, 1d20+1=7, 1d6+2=5

Male Human Fighter 1

"oh right, dog!" I say to myself, Mitnal's blow snaps me out of my distraction. With its back broke, I manage to also gut it while trying to dislodge it from my armor.

attack (1d20 +7=21)

damage (1d8 +3=8)

In the meantime I back out of the way to give Jessa a reasonable chance at a shot.

Mitnal and Eugen combine to smash and slice the remaining goblin dog who dies with a brief yelp.

Meanwhile the goblin struggles to continue ascending the wall.

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

Assuming we come to the next round (because Jessa already took an action this round)...she should be able to switch weapons on the move to her longbow. The floating dagger returns as a free action on its own. So...

Jessa readies her longbow even as Eugen and Mitnal cut down the remaining dogs. Slipping past them, she draws a bead on the fleeing goblin and lets fly one of her remaining arrows.

Ranged attack with longbow... 1d20+3 = 20 to hit
Damage... 1d8 = 8 hp

Male Human (Varisian) Bard 1 HP 10/10 | AC 15/11/14 | CMD 12 | saves F+2 R+2 W+3 | Vision: Perception +5, Sense Motive +1; Init +5 | Status: Normal

Assuming that the goblin didn't get away, and that he isn't any tougher than the rest...

"Well done Jessa, nice shot."

Male Human Fighter 1

"Wow, yeah, nicely done!" I say, brushing what I hope is the last of the entrails off of me.

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

Oblivious to the accolades, Jessa has greater problems to worry about...

"Ewwww...I've got dog's blood on my shoes! Yuck!"

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

Kenzo pauses after drawing a dagger and slipping it into a throwing grip, nods appreciatively at Jessa, and says, "Wow. Nice shot. You're getting good with that."

Thanks, as always, for covering me, Neil. So, now that everything is dead, what are we looking at?

The goblin falls to the ground with a "gawrk!"

The party is standing in a good sized courtyard. tenacious clumps of partially trampled grass grow fitfully here and there in the hard packed earth. In places the ground is stained with blood or scratched with furrows. To the north there are what appears to be two dead goblins lying slumped next to the doors of an outbuilding.

In addition to the door of the small outbuilding, there is a door on the northern wall and three doorways on the southern wall. One of them is the door the party has just moved through. The far western doorway on the southern wall is actually a set of double doors.

"Bigger is usually better," says Mitnal, pointing at the double doors with a grin.

He takes a quick look around the courtyard but is in too much of a hurry to keep going to see much.

No problem. But I'm always glad to see you back. :-)

Kenzo wrote:

"I think I'm getting better at a lot of stuff," she responds, "This adventuring thing kind of makes it so you have to, I guess."

Mitnal wrote:

"This place does seem to be quite large," Jessa remarks, squinting as she surveys the rest of the open courtyard, "Can someone check on that goblin to make sure he's not just playing dead? Meanwhile, I'll see what I can do about cleaning my shoes..."

"Propeus-desalle..." she murmurs, casting a spell and gesturing at her feet. Satisfied the blood has been properly cleaned away, she then strides further into the courtyard.

DM Wicht wrote:

"Hmmmm...I don't remember us fighting those goblins," she points, "I wonder how they died. Maybe we have an ally somewhere in here? Or were they just fighting among themselves, maybe?"

I walk warily over to the two goblins to check that they are really dead.

perception (1d20+2=16)

Then Lim takes to the skies, checking if there are any more courtyards or open areas.

The two goblins are quite dead and appear to have been dead for a few days. Their skulls have been crushed and parts of them are gnawed on.

There are no more open courtyards that the birds can see in the fort.

"um, guys, we should probably be aware that their are things here that are scarier than goblins - thes guys are a mess!"

At the sound of Gyorgy's voice something large stirs in the outbuilding and there is a tremendous crash against the wooden wall of the small shed like structure.

"Sounds like they trapped something in there. Maybe we should let it ...," Mitnal stops himself and thinks carefully. Letting it out will probably result in a fight. Fights are good. But we're here for something else. He's not quite sure what but he knows it isn't just fighting.

"...stay," he concludes with some reluctance. "Maybe we should let it stay there."

Male Human Fighter 1

"Where was goblin trying to get to, climbing up the wall? Maybe we could take a look at whatever it is beyond the doorway if we could find the right vantage point." I am having trouble suppressing my curiosity.

Judging by the condition of the wall, the plant growth and the large tree branch jutting over the top of the wall, it is possible to conclude that the other side of the wall the goblin was climbing is the outside of the fort. Very likely the goblin was trying to get away from dying.

"Don't forget, we still have that chest back the way we came," Kenzo says with a vague gesture as warily moves toward the shed. Once he's a little closer, he leans in and tries to listen to whatever it is stirring inside.

"Lim won't be long: he should be able to tell us if the wall leads anywhere."

I smile confidently but cross my fingers inside my pocket, hoping that Lim doesn't show me up.

Lim returns, reporting that the wall is just the outside wall of the courtyard. The roof of the outbuilding is also without holes, making it impossible to see what is inside. There are no other courtyards in the complex but the bird did notice that there were sleeping goblin in the southwest tower.

I quickly translate all of that into common for the rest of the group.

Male Human of the Shoanti Shriikirri-Quah Tribe Barbarian 3

Mitnal asks, "If we climb onto the roof, can we get to the sleeping goblin easily?"

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

Kenzo leans a little closer to the wall, debating whether he should actually put his ear against it.

Anything for my perception check?

Male Human Fighter 1

my posting may be spotty due to a huge commitment i have to the san mateo peninsula festival over the next 9 days. if all goes well though, i will have some time to actually log in and post.

Kenzo hears something large and bulky moving inside the shed. It does not speak but Kenzo can hear heavy breathing and heavy footsteps.

Mitnal calculates that it would be possible to climb up the outside of the tower. Furthermore, the structure is built in such a way as to be open below the roof, allowing access to the room atop the tower for any climbers.

"How 'bout we take care of the sleeping goblin," says Mitnal. He wonders if the others will think he is referring to 'The Sleeping Goblin Tavern' so he decides to clarify, "I mean, the sleeping goblin in the tower ... the one up there."

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

"We should certainly eliminate as many lone goblins as we can find," Jessa responds, "As that will be one less to attack Sandpoint. But it's really Nualia we need to find. Still, I wouldn't want another goblin like those last two sneaking up on us and causing trouble."

She gestures back the way they came. "Maybe we should go back and see what's in that chest the chieftain was so keen on hiding," she suggests, "Unless Kenzo wants to unleash whatever killed those other goblins first?"

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

The conversation between Mitnal and Jessa pulls Kenzo's attention away from the out building and whatever is in it, although he keeps glancing back. "I'm not one for killing a sleeping enemy, and although I'm intrigued by whatever is in that chest, perhaps we should press on? Once we're done here, we can take our time and come back for the chest."

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana

Jessa grimaces. "If I know goblins," she replies, "And I think I do by now...I seriously doubt that chest will still be there when we get back. One of the little cowards will likely wake up, find it, discover his chieftain is dead and there are longshanks killing every goblin in Thistletop, and then hightail it to one of the other tribes with whatever he can steal."

"And besides," she adds, "There may be something in that box we need. That chieftain certainly went to a lot of trouble to hide it. And that means he wasn't sharing it with Nualia. So maybe he had something in it he didn't want her to find? I think we'd better check it out."

"But I don't mind leaving the sleeping goblin undisturbed," she finishes, "As long as he doesn't disturb us."

Male Human of the Shoanti Shriikirri-Quah Tribe Barbarian 3

"One of us should kill the goblin," says Mitnal stubbornly with a glance at Kenzo. "then meet the rest back at the chest."

There is a great huff of breath from within the shed and something large continues to move. (Knowledge Nature Check?)

A flock of half a dozen gulls flies overhead, circling the fort. The crash of waves can still be heard. There are clouds coming in off of the ocean - an indication perhaps that the sunshine will soon give way to wetter weather.

Female Human Wizard (Diviner) 2 / Cleric 1 of Sivhana
Mitnal wrote:

Jessa opens her mouth to reply and then the sound of the great beast trapped in the outbuilding makes her hesitate.

Untrained Knowledge (nature) check using Intelligence... 1d20+3 = 13
The highest DC an untrained check can beat is 10.

"What is that thing?" Jessa wonders, "Maybe it's not safe to leave it in there? What if it breaks free and comes after us? Or...maybe it hates goblins enough it could help us? That would certainly keep more goblins from sneaking up on us."

Male Human of the Shoanti Shriikirri-Quah Tribe Barbarian 3

Mitnal looks around the yard for chains or lengths of rope. "We could set a trap!" he whispers loudly.

Male Human Ki Mystic Monk 4

You can't actually make any sort of knowledge check untrained, right? That said, I'll follow Neil's lead and just make an intelligence check.
