I haven't been on here for a while, but Mothman told me about teh contest. I showed up, saw it, went "aaah! there's hardly any time left, but I'm too busy with work to set aside time before the 14th!" So I thought "it's now or never," wrote one in an hour, submitted it, and now I feel all... apprehensive. I should have calmed down and spent a bit more time on it, and now it's too late.
Oh well if I hadn't done it just now I never would have, so I suppose I did the right thing... Right?

I submitted my piece on the first day you could submit it, however I am fortunate as I wasn't one of those who was ready at the first hour of submission.
But, I know what you mean, about re-thinking and second guessing what you submitted and how it will be received.
I'm more worried about if I made it, then I am worried about my wondrous item; not only do I think the price is roughly right, and the abilities balanced, but I also think it has a nice thematic flare to it.
Of course, I tend to like my creations (go, ego!) and I'm at a rough rejection to acceptance ration of 60/40 for lifetime gaming submissions.
In fact, in the first open call I ever took place in I had one item out of twelve accepted, but it was an artifact that earned a half-page piece of art, so I'm happy enough. :D
Nervous, impatience, yet happy.

I sympathise. Since I posted my entry I've been on tender hooks with each new post by one of the judges questioning whether or not I've fulfilled their requirements (note to self: stop reading the boards until the 28th :D ).
Having said that, as Mothman said I have a new item which I have already worked into my next adventure so I have lost nothing.

Hang in there guys.
Listen, let me ease your concerns. We have seen lots and lots of good submissions. Real good ones. My belief is that the difference between top 32 and not will be pretty subjective. And you cant control that. Its up to Erik, Wolfgang and I. I promise we will do our best and we will fairly consider every single one. But if you dont make the top 32 it isnt a comment that your item wasnt good. It just means there were 32 we liked better.
And right this second I can tell you that I dont even have 20 yet that I think are dead bang locks. The judges and I still have plenty of work to do. So hang in there and keep your heads up. You cant control this part anyway.
Dont sweat the submission. You did your best. Its in. Let us take it from there.

I just wish to clarify. I have the utmost confidence in you guys as judge, after all you represent three of the best rpg writers at the moment IMHO. As you say Clark, it's out of our hands now but the waiting is oh so hard :-D.
I do hope we get to see more than the top 32 though - perhaps a collection of honourable mentions ?

Yep. I know what you mean: uncertainty, excitement, anticipation... and we're just at the first round! Imagine what it's gonna be for those of us who make it to the next rounds! A real roller coaster for sure.
Designing stuff under stress, respecting deadlines, conventions (rules) and instructions... yup. That's the point of the contest actually. If someone can make it through six rounds with consistency, then that person surely can do some great work designing RPG products professionally.

No real anxiety here. I made an item which amused me, mechanics are pretty much what they are (and price was pulled out of the hat, as the subtype where my item belongs tend to have really random prices, not following any logic obvious to me). I probably should have got a proofreader to check my English but...if I make it to 32, yay!, if not, I'll live.

I'm much less stressed than I was about the Red Raven open call, for two reasons. One is, I am confident that I made my submission as good as I could have within the framework of the rules and the the kind of item I wanted to submit. That's not to say I'm confident that I'll make round two, any number of factors could eliminate me. The other reason is that even though I really want to be a game designer/writer, the payoff becomes less and less worth the risk for someone like me in the later rounds. If I get eliminated now, I can just shrug and say 'Oh well,' but if I get eliminated in the final round, I have to live with the fact that I just threw away a proposal that might have gotten green-lighted by the DI. And considering the quality of submissions in the first competition, anyone who makes the final four is going to submit a publishable proposal.
Right now the risk/investment is low, but the further I get in this contest, the more stressed I will be.

Since I created multiple items my stress comes from, DID I SUBMIT THE RIGHT ONE? If I don't make the cut, then I think I will wonder if one of the other items would have made it, but if this contest becomes the huge success that I think it will be, then there is a good chance that there will be another one later on. Win or lose, this contest has inspired me, so I hope that we see it again and again and again. I mean isn't American Idol in its 7th or 8th season? Good luck everyone.

For me, pricing a magic item is the hardest part of creation. It makes an item broken if priced too low and not worth a player's time if priced too high. This is usually why I make lower cost, simple magic items since they are easier to gage.
This time, however, I pushed my own envelope a little. I will see how it goes. They way I look at it - if just 32 people entered the contest, I will be all right.
Hang in there everyone.

Sympathizing exactly on both counts. I'm afraid mine was a bit too cheap. On the plus side, though, a player snooping through my notes already wants to build one, so I guess I've at least made something cool for an upcoming game session.
I wish everyone the best of luck! <readying action to cast bestow curse on nearest contestant>

I've been thinking it over since the contest started but have been so busy with non-game crap that I was terrified that I wasn't gonna pull it off. But low and behold an hour before the deadline the idea burst from my head and splattered on the page. ... And now with that awkward visual I think I'm going to go and gnaw some fingers with the rest of my comrades.

... The more I dwell on the subject, the more I'd like to change about my wondrous item. Aggggghhhhhhh! Anyone lese have the post-submission blues?
Who doesn't?
Of course, it's a moot point for me (I'm in the "oh crap I'm disqualified" category) but I'm (a) really interested in how this one turns out and (b) curious how often they'll be doing this.
And planar tolerance is such a cool spell too...
The problem for me is that I have a massive home campaign, and my home campaign is totally not SRD-only. Why would it be? So my mindset is completely different, as I find SRD-only to be incredibly limiting.
Try to imagine an epic SRD-only campaign. Hmmmm....

I know what you mean. I had to reset myself up for this and think. OK If I was running an introductory game what item would be cool for my players to have, both for RP and so they could use it? Basically though that also means the item I made is sorta geared to lower level equipment. I'm now worried that while it seems pretty cool for a low level item it won't compare to the more powerful, and more expensive stuff.

Nah, mine was geared toward fairly low level folks too.
Bells and whistles aren't everything. The concept needs to be solid and work and fill a niche, preferably an unfilled niche.
I hope that's what mine did, while suggesting stories at the same time. I can hope. We'll see.
