Lots of fun when you are seeing what you do to the monster, much less when a single die roll starts off the chain to "pass me some dice and a clean sheet, please." The worst wound suffered by our group's paladin (an untouchable death machine) came not from a critical hit, but a critical fumble.

Critical hit, ally.

Leg chopped off.

One angry player.

Isn't that what soul departure is for. Gives the Healer time to go pick up said leg and stick it back on :)

And in a pinch, the leg can be used as an improvised weapon, Medium Brawling ;)

Norse and Celtic mythology would also hold a good source of information.

And if your really into research read Neil Gaimans (You might know him from somewhere) Neverwhere, MirrorMask and Stardust. Might give you a few ideas.

I'd like to second this, especially the Celtic myth. Can I suggest you look into the Seelie and Unseelie court for ideas.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment, I can understand the decision to lump open lock in with Theft, after all what sort of thief is not going to be able to get into the establishment s/he intends to steal from.

Conversely open lock seems to be something that is more mechanically minded and thus fits more closely with disable device.

I wonder whether in situations like this open lock should fit into both categories, perhaps with a higher DC for theft as this is a more general skill.

Edited because I should read the thread just prior to posting.

Thanks Erik,

I like Fax Celestis forgot to save a copy of my submission but I can remember the gist of it.

Firehaire's Beastiary
A simple leatherbound book, Firehaire's Beastiary allows a reader who has studied the book for at least an hour a day over the course of a week to identify creatures more easily. An attuned reader gains a +5 competence bonus to any relevant knowledge check made to identify a creature. If the reader does not have ranks in a relevant knowledge, they are considered to have 5 ranks for the purposes of identifying the creature.

Additionally by studying the book for an hour the reader has a 70% chance of finding some useful information (such as the location of the lair or specific vulnerabilities) of a named creature.

CL:11th, fox's cunning, legend lore 36,000 gp.

I just wish to clarify. I have the utmost confidence in you guys as judge, after all you represent three of the best rpg writers at the moment IMHO. As you say Clark, it's out of our hands now but the waiting is oh so hard :-D.

I do hope we get to see more than the top 32 though - perhaps a collection of honourable mentions ?

I sympathise. Since I posted my entry I've been on tender hooks with each new post by one of the judges questioning whether or not I've fulfilled their requirements (note to self: stop reading the boards until the 28th :D ).

Having said that, as Mothman said I have a new item which I have already worked into my next adventure so I have lost nothing.
