I love the Dark Sun campaign setting. I would really like to run a game set in it again, but I'm not terribly fond of the 2e ruleset. Simply transferring the 'fluff' to 3.5 would be easy, but it would be incomplete. Part of what made Dark Sun cool was the incorporation of psionics and the variant magic system.
So, for all your Dark Sun savvy people out there, how do we bring Defilers and Redeemers to 3.5? What changes need to be made to the magic system in order to provoke the same sense of wonder and (in some cases) horror inherent to the magic of Athas? I'd love to hear some thoughts.

Really? 'Cause it looks like, uh, something else. That's what I get for watching too much anime.
Dark Sun should be resurrected, as should Planescape, though somehow I doubt any new editions would be able to bring back the magic of those settings exactly as we'd hope.
Yeah, I would love to play Dark Sun, Planescape or any of the other quirky second edition campaign settings one day. I'll have to order the Dungeon issue with the Dark Sun update, if it's still available. The only thing is that I'm not really interested in the rules for psionics, so I would consider replacing the psion with the sorcerer and filing off the serial numbers or something.
hmm; something to think about for sure; I really enjoyed DS when I played in a campaign.
I haven't seen the Dragon magazines that had the Darksun information in it, but athas.org had a lot of free information that seemed to be pretty well put together. They got rid of defilers and preservers and just gave wizards as a whole the option to do either or with social repurcussions for using too much defiling magic.
I think they also got rid of the 3-24 stats, stating that because the attribute bonuses are so easy to get in 3.0-3.5, that the new Darksun stats are simply 3-18.

They're all updated or in the process of being updated to 3.5. It's all volunteers, but they're dedicated (I've lent a hand on occasion); they're promising several 3.5 supplements out before 4E.
I have completed the FULL conversion from 2nd Ed DARK SUN into PATHFINDER. This was PURELY a labor of love, and I am NOT out for money of any kind, I just truly enjoy this campaign setting! Get in contact with me, lets get this out there to the rest of the world!
