OK, here's the question: I'm moving to Korea in three days, the packers are coming in the morning. It turns out my apartment is going to be pretty small, so I've last-minute decided to limit myself to 10 or less D&D gamebooks. If you really believe you'd want more than 10, then list them. The Core books are a given...so what should the other seven be? I have virtually every 3.0 and 3.5 book, so have at it! And thanks for your input!

Those are my picks. With those plus core you've got plenty of options without going overboard. Now, if I could add a few more I'd suggest:
Tome of Magic (because magic users who are not mainstream are kinda mysterious and cool. Plus there is some great artwork in this book).
Unearthed Arcana, simply because it is like a brainstorm of variant options, and I like things like the Cloistered Cleric.
Book of Exalted Deeds and Book of Vile Darkness, just because I like my Lights really Light and my Darks REALLY Dark.
The three more recent complete books, if only for the alternate class features and feats.
Dungeonscape, just because I like the concept of the Factotum and would love to see one in play.
All of that being said, really the only extra ones I would push for would be Unearthed Arcana and BoED. (And I might photocopy the alternate class features and feats from the 3 newer complete books).

Bring 'em all and make furniture out of the ones you don't use much.
Get a scanner and take those little ones and zeroes with you. For where ever you're leaving get a climate controlled storage unit. (Or friend's house)

Yeah, It's only a year, though I'm considering volunteering for two years. My daughter can go to the school on base or at the Embassy, and my wife's Korean, so it's a piece of kimche, er, cake for her, and it's another $450 a month voluntary extension bonus! At any rate, it's a weight restricted location, so I can only take three thousand pounds. I can get by with very little, and my wife is excited to buy new stuff, but my daughter is three and attached to everything in her room, to include her six hundred pounds of books! 3K sounds like a lot, but it disappears fast! I've got a house sitter moving in tomorrow night (think, The Shining, "Gotta keep that boiler running in the winter, ayah, gotta keep it at just the right temperature or it's KABLOOIE!!"), so he can keep my library company, but I will miss whatever I don't take :-(

Korea is one giant wireless broadband network! Technologically speaking, it's literally right beside japan, in both respects, ha, ha. Yes, #2, also. My Mac is loaded with pdfs! The bad thing about 3.5 pdfs is that they cost almost the same as the physical book (drivethrurpg.com).

Well, since you can 'take 10' and have more than two minutes to spare... go ahead and 'take 20'!

What about buying some of the PDFs of the ones You don't actually need at the table but don't want to leave behind?
i.e. It sounds like You use the BoVD as a BBEG Cookbook but You aren't likely to need to generate new arch villians on-the-fly at the table right? Same thing with the MM's if You prepare encounters in advance. Similarly, as an experienced DM You might not even need more than just the SRD handy for spells, magic items and treasure tables which would eliminate the Core3 also...

Those specific examples are pretty good points in favor of the PDFs...While I've spent hours with BoVD and BoED and the MMs, they rarely make an appearance at the table. Thanks.
Ask yourself this...
1. What type of campaigns are you going to run?
2. Are you going to be doing the Pathfinder / Gamemastery campaigns exclusively?
3. If not, what whould you need to keep for 6 players occupied for a year?
4. If this is NOT for the player alone, what do YOU need to keep yourself occupied?
5. What can you get over there?

If I had to pick 7 books besides the core 3, I would be looking at those books that gave me the most bang for buck so to speak. So my list just off the top of my head would go...
Spell Compendium
Magic Item Compendium
Rules Compendium (yeah yeah I know it isn't out, but it will be in a few more months)
After those 3, I would take as many of the Complete Series as you can if you are going to be primarily playing, or as many of the Monster Manual/Monster Ecology type books that you can if you are primarily DMing. All that said, if you want the best of both worlds, bring an AP to run while you are gone as it will take about a year, and 12 magazines don't weigh that much. Then you can focus on the Complete Books and such instead of monster books as everything you need to run the AP's is in the adventures.
Hope that helps. Personally, I don't think I could limit it down to 10 books or even 30. My D&D collection is my primary form of entertainment and in truth my one indulgence. Best of luck overseas!!!

It is not perfect because you have to have to wait for others to input the data into DM Genie. But for the $30 it costs for DMGenie (or some similar product) you get access to most of your library.
And subscribe to Pathfinder so you get digital adventures. Your weight restrictions apply on the way home also! Send your Pathfinder hardcopy to your home of record. (I am old Army. I spent 18 months in Korea.)

Wow! A reverse of my natural thinking, but a great suggestion! I think I know the Dming, but especally for new players or lapsed players, the other books would be most helpful. Digital Pathfinder and GameMastery are huge boons, too. DM Genie support for Mac?

In the end, I did, indeed, decide to leave about two hundred pounds of military gear I've collected over ten years (and will get reissued in Korea anyway) and half the civilian clothes I planned on taking, which allowed me to take ALL MY BOOKS, even the CoC books!
A cool thing about this thread--by limiting the number of books to be listed, I think we see a general picture of what, as gamers, we see as the most important of the supplements! Interesting, and thanks again, to everyone! My books are packed, wrapped and crated. They board the Slow Boat out of Anchorage to the Far East tomorrow!
Well, too late to influence your selections, but I like having the core books hardcopy available, and that is especially true if you're trying to recruit/train new gamers. Much more enjoyable to page through the books with their artwork than to wade through SRD online if you're new to the game. And I've gotten to the point where I can find just about anything in the books as fast as you can look it up online.
Otherwise, enjoy Korea. It sounds like you may have done a tour there before, but if you haven't, make sure to see Kyongju (the capital of the ancient Korean state of Silla) when you're there. It's a bit far if you're stationed at Seoul or Osan, but not too far from Pusan or Chinhae. Korea's a great place, and I'd love to have done a two-year tour there.
Good luck shipping your collection home again if it grows. (You'll undoubtedly collect a lot of knick-knacks and memorabilia too--or your wife and daughter will). Surface mail shipping of books is usually not inordinately expensive--I shipped six 50 pound boxes of books home from China about 5 years ago for about $300. Of course if you wait two years you can just leave your collection with your mates there and come back and buy 4e stuff. ;)

Thats funny... When I moved to Turkey.. and knew I was going to be in a small Dorm room.. I thought...hmm... Should I leave my thousands of RPG books in storage?.. I only have a 500 pound weight limit...hmm.. nah... nah that many books can't way that much...
Ended up I was 500 pounds over my weight limit.. and still waiting to be charged for that... My dorm room was.. Bed... Computer desk..Surrounded by Books and Books everywhere!!! Was not easy getting around :-p

Thanks! the traditional Paizo-Concern is appreciated, and at least half of what keeps me coming back for more (the other half of course, being the superior-quality products)! :D
