Barbarian (berserker) 3; Init +1; AC18; Hp 36/41; Saves Str +5, Con +7; Passive Perception 9

Oso ducks below his shield and it takes the spiders fangs.

Oso flat-footed = AC14

This is the last straw, with a savage roar, Oso smashes down his sword at the creature.

Oso rages. Melee attack 4+5=9, damage 0

He then steps back five foot to give the others a firing line.

Male Human Fighter 1

Malleon leans over the edge and fires arrows as quickly as possible now that Oso has cleared his line of fire.

Rapid Shot!

1st Arrow - 1d20+3=8. I'm not going to bother rolling damage for that one, lol

2nd Arrow - 1d20+3=17. Damage 1d8+1=7pts

I'm down to 38 arrows now

Oso swings wildly at the 8-legged monstrosity, missing but forcing into line of sight for Malleon. In rapid succession, the young warrior blasts out two arrows, one snapping into the hard earth a mere inch from Oso, but the other striking true deep into the back of the poisonous beast. The beast thrashes in pain, jostling the corpse from which spills another horrid sight . . .a swarm of spiders.

the swarm is 10 ft. from Oso, the Monstrous Spider is adjacent. The room is 10x10 or so; this means that the spider swarm will end its turn covering both the Monstrous Spider and Oso if everyone stays in the cellar; the ladder is right behind Oso.

Initiative is Chalen
Bobek
Louinor
Spider
Oso
Malleon
Swarm

Chalen's go.

Male (5' 11'' 150 lbs.) Human Sorcerer 1

Moving if necessary, should anyone have stepped in front of Chalen.

“This has gone on long enough; I’m not stepping foot in that hellish hole to get my lamp back. You’re bringing it up here, Oso.”

"Sorry about this," Chalen murmurs, and then begins a progression of arcane gesticulations accompanied by lilting, almost melodic words.

Chalen casts Color Spray at the swarm.

Abruptly, a scintillating riot of colored light bursts forth from Chalen’s outstretched hand, the light arcing into a cone shape as it closes on the spider swarm.

“After all, what has more eyes than a spider?”

Barbarian (berserker) 3; Init +1; AC18; Hp 36/41; Saves Str +5, Con +7; Passive Perception 9

I am uncertain about whether or not Oso needs to save for the spell. If he does, Will save roll 14+3+2=19.

The angry barbarian takes a moment to glance back up at Chalen. It is a look of hatred and savage anger. His eyes are almost blood red with violence.

Then he looks back at the spiders.

Yeah, the cone would likely affect everything in there. It looks like you make your save.

Unfortunately color spray is a pattern mind-affecting spell and has no effect on vermin

Bobek's go.

Oso Legumbe wrote:

Yeah, the apology was meant for you ;)

Dungeon Master wrote:

D'oh. Stupid mindless creatures! Knew I should have gone with sleep instead.

So

A burst of colors streams from Chalen's outstretched hands. Oso is nearly blinded but shields his eyes in time, the spiders seem unaffected.

Ok, now Bobek's go -- we know he is on vacation -- I will post for him by 7 tonite (eastern time)

M Human Scout1

Bobek hesitates, startled by the extreme violence that has transformed Oso's demeanor, and by the arcane fireworks shooting from Chalen's hand. Then regaining his composure, looses another arrow at the Monstrous Spider.
Rolled a Natural 1! Clearly disturbed by Oso's rage...

Not sure if we are playing fumble checks, but if so I roll a d20 + 2 = 19 Dex Check.

Bobek is clearly distracted by the burst of color. His arrow does not even clear the cellar entrance and instead sticks into the trapdoor jam.

Louinor's go. She is above the cellar entrance with Malleon, Bobek and Chalen -- you guys have it surrounded.

Female Human Cleric 1st

Louinor looks down through the trap door at the thousands of spiders swarming towards Oso. With her holy symbol in one hand and her morningstar in the other she virtually jumps down the hole using the ladder to slow her fall. She quickly moves to Oso guarding his flank and starts smashing and stomping on anything that moves.
Attack: 16 + 1 = 17 damage: 6 + 1 = 7
Sorry when hunting this weekend should be back for the rest of the week.

The priestess of Desna jumps down the cellar and lands a thunderous blow on the largest spider threatening Oso. It convulses and dies. However, thousands of much smaller spiders take its place, already beginning to crawl up the adventurer's legs.

Monstrous Spider is dead; Malleon's turn, then the swarms. Louinor I figured your attack went against the big spider. The swarm is immune to weapon damage.

Male Human Fighter 1

"%$#^%!, %^*&$#!" Malleon swears under his breath as he drops his bow beside him. (Not in the pit).

"Get out of there!" Malleon yells as Louinor and Oso as he tries to quickly light a torch with his flint and stee;. I should have bought tindertwigs

A move action to withdraw torch, a standard action to light it. Malleon now has a lit torch in his hand

The swarm crawls over both Louinor and Oso; a hundred biting, crawling, grasping spiders rend your skin and blanket your body. You each take 1 point of damage. Make two saving thows (Fortitude) before your next action. If you fail the first you suffer -2 points of strength due to poison, if you fail the second you are nauseated from the mass of spiders and can only take a single move action on your next turn. The DC of both saves is 11

Chalen's go.

Male (5' 11'' 150 lbs.) Human Sorcerer 1

Stupid spiders. Better not try to put them to sleep; if it didn't work, well, Oso is mad enough already. If only I'd taken that lamp down myself.

"The lamp! Oso, throw my lamp on them!"

Oh for the God's sakes, he's not carrying it!

Against all better judgment, Chalen heads into the basement and takes up the lamp, ready to throw it on the swarm and his new friends. (double move action - move downstairs, pick up weapon)

Oso must have delayed. Now he steps back into the action. First the saves.

Fort save vs str dam roll 2+6=8, Fort save vs nausea roll 19+6=25

With the spider slain by Louinor, Oso is briefly lost in rage at the lack of a monster. He drops his sword. Then he grabs the lantern off the mage and smashes it on the largest part of the swarm.

More angry now he feels weaker, the barbarian lets out a roar of frustration.

My mistake entirely, Oso. I apologize. Consider your save against poison made in return. Sorry again.

Ok I messed up Oso's turn. To rectify, I am giving him a pass on his 1st fort save, and letting him go this turn in his normal order -- I HATE MESSING LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT UP, so my bad :(

Chalen scurries down the ladder and swipes the lamp. He feels spiders underfoot with every step. As soon as he has grabbed the lantern, Oso moves the sorcerer back towards the ladder with a powerful swipe of his arm; he also snags the lamp, twirls it and smashes it against the the swarm at his feet. Oso roll 1d4 damage The lamp fire douses and burns a decent number of the spidery beasts.

Bobek's go.

Male (5' 11'' 150 lbs.) Human Sorcerer 1

My poor lamp. We barely knew ye.

Barbarian (berserker) 3; Init +1; AC18; Hp 36/41; Saves Str +5, Con +7; Passive Perception 9

No problem on the mix up and yoric the lamp does 3 pts of damage

Barbarian (berserker) 3; Init +1; AC18; Hp 36/41; Saves Str +5, Con +7; Passive Perception 9

Bobek's turn, I believe

Bobek will set aside his bow, withdraw a torch and light it.

Louinor's go. Need those two fort saves.

Female Human Cleric 1st

Fort save 6+3=8 Fort Save 17 + 2 = 19

Louinor swats at the spiders as the bite at her and soon her blood burns with the spiders poison. Maybe this wasn't a very good idea she thinks to her self.

Louinors frantic movements manage to keep the spiders out of most of her cloths and she finally reaches back and grabs a torch. She thrusts the torch into the flames from the broken lantern setting it alight.

I think that covers my turn

All right, Oso's go.

You suffer 2 points of str damage

Male (5' 11'' 150 lbs.) Human Sorcerer 1

If we are still in combat while I am asleep, assume I jump clear and pour my remaining pint of lamp oil on the spiders. If they're dead by my turn, I'll think of something else to do when I wake up.

Dungeon Master wrote:

By you I meant Louinor for clarification.

Barbarian (berserker) 3; Init +1; AC18; Hp 36/41; Saves Str +5, Con +7; Passive Perception 9

Fort save vs Str dam roll 6+5=11, Fort save vs nausea roll 17+5=22

Oso grabs at the mage and his back pack and quickly rifles it for oil. He finds none and staggers across the room to the woman's body in a haze of swarming spiders. As he goes he struggles to focus his anger and still search for that cursed oil.

Male Human Fighter 1

Might as well jump in the hole as well, lol

With a burning torch in either hand, Malleon jumps down into the hole Tumble 1d20+3 = 18 if necessary)

"Argh! I hate bugs! Get out!"

Malleon crouches and swings both torches in short horizontal arcs through the swarms, attempting to drive off the spiders with the flames.

Attack I: 1d20+1 = 16

Attack II: 1d20+1 = 4

I'm not sure what the damage is with a lit torch? Let me know and I'll roll it, assuming I hit

First off all the basement is now full up! it is 10x10. The spider swarms over two squares - Louinor's and now Chalen. Oso is at the back as is Malleon who tumbled there. The tight quarters are very bad for swinging torches in (both of which miss the spiders) and as a result Louinor needs to make a dex check to avoid Malleon.

The cellar is absolute chaos. Spiders crawl over everything. Oso scrambles towards the back of the cellar looking for something useful, while Malleon jumps down into the cellar swinging two torches wildly at the horde of insects. Bobek stays up top wondering what to do. Both Louinor and Chalen feel the stinging bites of the arachnids more than anyone else . . .Damage for Chalen and Louinor is 2 points. You two need to make 2 Fortitude saves both DC 11. The first one determines if you lose 1 point of Str, the second determines if you are nauseated.

Initiative has been slightly changed -

Chalen
DM
Bobek
Louinor
Oso
Malleon
Swarm

Chalen's go . . .

Male Human Unfortunately, I appear to be an Expert, not anything cool :-(

This battle seems to be very cinematic, with swarms of spiders, a monsterous spider, tumbling and jumping heros, flames and blades being swung around.

I like it.

Me too. After each battle I will gather everyone's actions and post a cinematic account of it. I may do this with most battles, as kind of a breather before we get into the next action.

Male (5' 11'' 150 lbs.) Human Sorcerer 1

Bah! The good stuff always happens at work where IC is web-sensed out.

Ok, made two Fort rolls at some random roller for 15 (14+1) and 11 (10+1).Ignore the double 19's, made an attempt at separating the rolls for clarity).

Wonder if 6 hp remaining will cover me being ignited, ha.

Chalen removes the pint of lamp oil from his pack and begins to shower the spiders with it.

Oh is this going to suck.

M Human Scout1

Bobek stifles a chuckle at the unusual sight unfolding beneath him. Then, as he sees Chalen sloshing oil around in the tight space packed with people and torches, he recalls the lessons taught to him by the druids of the forest: "Careful with that flame, stranger! Fire can be a good friend or a savage foe!"

His scout instincts kicking in, Bobek spins to survey the surrounding area for danger, and to check on the little girl.

Rolled a Natural 20 for a Spot Check, for a total of 26. Wow, I'm really rolling at the extremes, here.

Chalen covers the spiders swarming over him and Louinor with a vial of oil, even as they crawl into his backpack, robes, and hair . . . if someone can light the oil . . . Lit oil will be 1d4 damage, and if someone uses a torch to do it it will be and additional 1d3 damage.

Bobek actually begins to chuckle, but a noise gathers his attention. He casts his gaze back to Jeva . . .only to discover a hideous sight. THe young girls face is bulging, sprouts of hair erupting from her pallid and flesh. Her arms seem disjointed and elongated, in a matter of seconds (horrific seconds for Bobek) the young girl has fully erupted into a vicious, snarling werewolf. Her yellow dress hangs from her in tatters a mockery of the innocent child she appeared to be . . .she darts forward standing next to Bobek poised for a strike . . . her fetid breath washes over the scout who almost trips over the bow at his feet.

Louinor's go. Sorry about Jeva guys, but this is the perfect opportunity for her ;)

Male (5' 11'' 150 lbs.) Human Sorcerer 1

Smells like a TPK in here, lol. Well, TPK and burnt hair.

For those of you with access to Jeva's stats . . .don't worry she has been dimmed down a bit . . .a CR 4 on top of these damnable spiders would have been a bit much . . .don't you think? lol

Female Human Cleric 1st

Currently hp: 6 Str: 10
Fort save 19 +2 = 21 Fort Save 7 + 2 = 9

A shudder runs through Louinor's body as the spiders start crawling under her cloths. I can't remember the penalties when you are nauseated

"We need to get out of here."
Louinor takes her torch and thrusts it in the oil soaked spiders.

damage for oil: 3 damage from torch: 1
Do I take the 3 damage also? I assume so.

Flames flare up around Louinor and crawl up her cloths and she hisses in pain as it burns her legs.

hps down to 3

Barbarian (berserker) 3; Init +1; AC18; Hp 36/41; Saves Str +5, Con +7; Passive Perception 9

If anyone is at work or not sure about the more normal stuff then I suggest that you go to the D20 system rules document, type in srd, and search for nausea for instance. I find it very useful.

DM - what is the condition of the swarm before Oso acts?

Hmm . . ok --- nauseated means you only get a move action, so Louinor should of only had a move action, which would negate her oil spider thing, but I am generous . . .instead she loses another point of Str (we will assume she failed the poison save and made the nauseated save instead of vice versa) . . .also you need to roll to hit the swarm, unless you are just dropping the lit torch . . which we will say Louinor did -- so

Louinor drops the torch. Hungry flames spread out as the torch touches the oil covered swarm Louinor, Chalen, and swarm all take 3pts damage, Louinor has already marked hers.

Many of the spider's shrivel and ignite, but a fair number of the relentless beasts press on their fangs and mandibles still seeking purchase on the flesh of the heroes.

Oso's go.

Female Human Cleric 1st

So I am know down to Str 9 so -1 to attacks and damage. Jeva's going to clean our clock when we finally get out of this hole.

Louinor wrote:

That's the spirit! :)

Oso Legumbe wrote:

DM - what is the condition of the swarm before Oso acts?

Injured, and therefore less numerous, but still crawling over Chalen and Louinor. It is Oso's go.

Barbarian (berserker) 3; Init +1; AC18; Hp 36/41; Saves Str +5, Con +7; Passive Perception 9

The worst of Oso's rage leaves him briefly, and he quickly tries to assess what is going on.

Spot 17+1=18, Listen 5+5=10

Seeing the monster up above through the trapdoor as the real threat, Oso shouts at the others, "Get out, leave the spiders, Bobek is in real danger. Look up!"

With that Oso sweeps up the pair of silver daggers in his pawlike fist.

Three rounds of rage left. Malleon you're next, want some silver treasure?

Oso spots Bobek and the werewolf. Things start to make a bit of sense, as he grabs the silver daggers, better understanding their purpose now. Chalen and Louinor are still blanketed in spiders. Things look grim for our heroes.

Malleon's turn.

M Human Scout1

Bobek will holler (out of turn) at the top of his lungs, "Forget them spiders, we got some REAL trouble up here! That little girl wants to EAT ME!!!"

Male Human Fighter 1
Oso Legumbe wrote:

Malleon will grab a silver dagger from Oso, and then quickly try to climb the ladder and tumble away from the opening, drawing the monster's attention. And set up a flank. And I left the two torches down amongst the spiders.

Tumble = 1d20+3=16

Male (5' 11'' 150 lbs.) Human Sorcerer 1

"I officially hate it in here!”

Fort rolls: 21 & 19 Wrar!

Chalen flails about, shaking as many spiders off as he can, and charges up the stairs as fast and as far as he can go.

“Oh, and you owe me a lamp..."

Poor Chalen and Louinor, the fighters seemed to have abandoned you . . .but Malleon did leave two burning torches nearby

Malleon swipes the offered silver dagger from Oso and hurtles his athletic frame up the ladder and out into the crisp air of the fall morning. He darts around Bobek, and comes up on the side of Jeva in a flanking position. The silver dagger sits steady in his hand, the dangerous weapon elicits a snarl from the werewolf; the action reveals vile fangs and a cold, cruel, intelligence in the werewolf's eyes.

Chalen the swarm acts before you. And don't forget you took 3 hp of fire damage earlier in the round

The swarm continues its ravenous savaging of the priestess and sorcerer, the stings now so numerous it is impossible to tell where one stops and another begins. Louinor and Chalen take 2 points of damage. Chalen has already made his saves, but Louinor on your next action, give me a 2 fort saves. DC 11 - the first one for 1 point of str damage from poison, the next for Nausea (move action only if you fail)

Chalen, singed and bitten to exruciating effect clambers up the ladder and despite his haggard state actually pines for his lamp.
Chalen are you flanking Jeva as well or moving out of range?
Oh, yeah for those keeping track -- Bobek is adjacent to the hole with Jeva 10 feet from the hole, essentially Bobek is between the trapdoor and Jeva (that is why she is not AoO as you come out of the ladder)

Bobek's go. You are adjacent to the trapdoor and Jeva. Your bow is at your feet. Also of note the oil is burned off Louinor now, that means thrusting a torch into the swarm will not burn you.
