some guy, who is a Drill Sargent, and he beats on a garbage can lid with a damn broomstick when you've only gotten 3 hours of sleep cause you did fire watch which entails sitting up for 1.5 hours looking at some bald motherf*%*er you don't like, and watching the halls so people don't beat the s&&! out of eachother in the bathroom at 2 a.m.,

and then he says a lot of mean stuff to you.
And you were dreaming about a woman!

(did they make you do the laundry when you were on watch? i hated that...)

you finally get asleep on the bus, going from houston to orlando for christmas (this is in 90) and some scraggly "traveller" type sits in the seat next to you and pokes you asking if he can bum a smoke...

Liberty's Edge

(you had to pay the guy on watch to do laundry. I'd do watch for money and say to hell with it, once I realized that sleep was a weapon they used against you.)

Liberty's Edge

(you got paid??? man, alpha company, d platoon sucked!!!)

Liberty's Edge

More like bribery....

basic was okay but A.I.T. sucked.

i liked AIT. i was a 52D (diesel generator mechanic, wound up crosstraining in all the "63" mos jobs when i got to my unit), ft. belvoir. weekend passes with a 250mi radius from 18:00 friday to 18:00 sunday. the circle gave us as far as midtown manhattan to the north, just about the nc/sc border to the south (not much to the west to do except touristy stuff...)

Liberty's Edge

I did basic at Jackson; I was commo in the Nat. Guard; did AIT at Fort Gordon.
My training company was just.....it had a lot of problems.
Half the D.S.'s were up on fraternization charges or some crap.
Man, I just wanted to get the hell out of there.
Loooooooooong time ago. Talking 16 years ago. I got out before all this 9/11 stuff, then I had a wife, and then I had kids; I can't really afford to go back in and catch a bullet.
I liked basic, though. All the yelling and b$$%$!%~ doesn't phase me.
And I could shoot really good, and I could draw, so when the D.S.'s find out you can draw skulls with daggers in their mouth and stuff, they get little projects for you and you don't have to jerk around as much. You just have to remember that...."art takes as long as it takes, man....and I need these comics and magazines; I draw from them."

Liberty's Edge

In AIT, though, I didn't want to draw nothing for those a#@~#*@s.

i did basic and ait in 89. before "stress cards" and all that madness. you got smoked, you got SMOKED. i did basic at ft. polk, "lone ironman II". bunch of hokie okie reservists doing their summer atx. one "permanent" drill per platoon, two new ones every two weeks who watched the first half of "full metal jacket" too many times.

(responding to edit: yeah, i can draw as well, drew our platoon banner and our door emblem - death skull, two bayonettes, stereotypical stuff...)

Liberty's Edge

I went in 92. We got dropped in our class a's right after Thanksgiving dinner. So, I puked all over, just to be a dick.

Guys would try to commission porn and stuff in Basic. It was a trip.

(LOL) I think about that when they're going off on Seoni pictures on Pathfinder...."Hey, could you draw her like...yeah. Bigger! Draw them bigger! That's not big enough. Okay, great. Here's $20."
Man, Van Gogh never sold a painting.

i got a lot of that when i was in prison. i taught the ACE art class, and guys just wanted to learn how to draw naked women and tattoo flash...

Liberty's Edge

Man, yeah. It's a dang good skill. It was like the ONLY thing that was truly mine, that no Army or nothing could take from me.

between my UNICOR job and drawing portraits and tats, i lived pretty well in the joint. now so well i'd EVER want to go back, but good for the circumstances...

Never been to jail even.
Came close, once or twice.
In my younger, more messed up days.
I don't think I've even broken the law in Texas the 6 years I've been here, aside from like driving too fast and stuff like that.

good deal. even the soft low security fed joint i went to gets to you after a while. most of the dudes locked up with you are morons (seriously) with too much testosterone and no sense.

i did have a pretty awesome d&d group though. started with 2e and ended with 3.5. had a paizo "dungeon" subscription for a couple of years (and a friend had dragon), my first introduction to the company (thanks mom!).

one dude played a cleric, every time he turned something he'd shout "by the power of donblas, i declare you undead!". god, that was funny...

Liberty's Edge

Nothing but time to think...damn.
My dad had a greyhound farm; I worked on it, and didn't have anything to do but think about D&D stuff. A friend of mine a few years later, he drove trucks; same deal. Driving, and driving, and thinking up D&D stuff.
It sucks, but damn if you don't think up some crazy D&D stuff, man.
My commute to and from work is when I think up stuff nowadays.

yeah, i recreated my entire homebrew from memory over the six and a half i did inside. maps, npcs, organizations, the whole shebang. came up with some twisted adventures and plots, too.

we played four or five times a week (d&d heaven, really)...

but...no gamer chicks (or any other non-guard/staff women, for that matter)...
