Howabout locke, the rougish knifethrower? ..and a collection of some 300 various daggers.. :D
Why would you want a sort-of red knifethrower? Or did you mean ROGISH?!? Rouge is a color, Rogue is an acrobat or nimble individual with a quick wit. It's a core-class, get it right.

I think he meant ROGUISH.

Thanks, Crockett. We will keep on policing the red dishes.

Dammit! I was hoping nobody would catch the LOST ripoff aspect. Well, now the cat's out of the bag.

Haven't read the ST yet, so I absolutely will not down it. However, I'm hoping that these similarities to Lost aren't overpowering because I truly dislike playing 'to the tune of' adventures.
As I mentioned in The Wicker Man post, take-offs make it near impossible to suspend disbelief. As D&D players we can pretend that horses fly and that lil runed sticks can shoot lightning, but we're not so daft as to not notice that the pirate's name Binsad the Sailor seems eerily reminiscent of Sinbad. Once we realize the similarity, do we feel good about it?
When you get the sense that your play is recreating something already well known out there you are no longer helping to create the story... you are helping to recreate the story. I feel it cheapens the adventure by not letting it be its own thing.
But again, my comments are not aimed at ST because I have yet to read it. I'm very excited to have a new AP.

We specifically toned down certain elements from the original campaign outline to avoid accidental Lost parallels. Yeah, the Isle of Dread part of the AP (itself only a single "arc" of many) has some similarities in that it is a mysterious tropical island, but it's otherwise not a lot like Lost.
By this logic, Lost is a ripoff of the old Isle of Dread module. ;)

honestly, I think we'd connect the smallest things to Lost or anythign else. Thats just a part of our culture nowadays. So this AP has pirates and prolly a crocodile and a maybe a clock soemwhere it must be peter pan. Total peter pan ripoff dude.
anyway at least this thread finally made me realize why jack on lost seems so much mroe capable than everyone else. He's a cleric, D&D's most powerful core class.

So I assume you edited out the references to DHARMA and there won't be a "Savage Tide internet expirience" where we scour the web looking for clues?

Which makes Sawyer a thieving rogue and Locke a ranger. Oh, and Charlie is a bard or maybe just a an Expert with a few ranks in Perform considering Drive Shaft was awful. And Jin (is that right? Not sure of the Korean guy's name) would be a monk, right?

Michael- 15th level jerk off.
have any of you looked into some of the weird LOST stuff out there? the history of the "black rock" is pretty interesting.
I read that the head writer wanted it to have a " dungeons and dragons" feel to it- he got the idea for the flashback stories that tie everyone together from "The Watchmen" comic. Geek tv for geeks- by geeks.
It wouldn't suprise me if some elements were based on the isle of dread... but not Walt.

My ex-girlfriend sang the song that closed out that movie. She did a cover of Kung-Fu fighting, which was a song I'd sing to her incessantly. So I guess beating me to a recording contract with EMI and firing that song right back at me gave her the final say.
Can't win 'em all. Lucky if I win a few.

It's not a rakasta, is it?
Is that the same thing as a RAKSHASA??? :-P
Wait! You speak common!? Why didn't you just say so?!
Man, if my son burnt my raft, I'd sac him for mana.
That gave me a great laugh.
This is a great post. However, I see no mention of Jack, the fearless leader. What do you think he would be? I'm going with some type of Knight (PHB2) or Paladin. He's definitely honorable, 'cause I woulda nailed Kate eons ago!

Actually, if you had played the game for a long time, you'd know that Rakasta is correct. It was Rakasta in original D&D in which Isle of Dread was the first non-dungeon crawl module.
AD&D changed it to Rakshasa I believe.

Rakasta was a humanoid with a great cat's head from X1: Isle of Dread. I've been bugging the authors a little bit, because I've gathered that they probably won't be including rakastas in the new AP. But I'll live (waaah...)
The Rakshasa was a monster from Indian legend, that ate human flesh and could take the forms of people. A show on t.v. in the early 70's called The Night Stalker, with a journalist named Karl Kolshak (sp?), had an episode where he was up against a rakshasa. It was a classic show, kind of a precursor to the X-Files. Some of the fx were cheeseball, but it was early 70's t.v.Then D&D 1e. had a monster called the rakshasa. I'm assuming as an homage to Night Stalker they kept the idea of a blessed crossbow bolt as a bane to the rakshasa.
I worked with a lady from India, and she told me that it was news to her that rakshasas had tiger heads, thumbs on the ulnar side of the palm, and were harmed by blessed crossbow bolts.

Aw, yeah... Kolchak: The Night Stalker. That show is the bomb. Check it out, it's on DVD now.
I think the episode in particular was called "Horror in the Heights", but I could be wrong. There's also an episode with a succubus, which in this case is an evil spirit that posesses the bodies of beautiful, recently slain women to go out and kill guys. It's pretty kooky.
Actually, they're all pretty kooky. Awesome, but kooky.
You know, Kolchak Nightstalker is a pretty damn decent name for a D&D character. But you'd probably want to ditch Carl's totally awesome $2 hat. Erm, unless you were a follower of St. Cuthbert, then I guess it might work.
Oh, and the blessed crossbow bolt thing's actually part of the legend. I think it's covered in the Ramayana, but I could be wrong. It could also have ben covered in the Mahabharata, but I'm too lazy to check. In any case, it's mentioned that the beasts can only be killed by a blessed crossbow bolt. No foolin'.
Eh. I'll look it up and see what I can find. I swear it's in there somewhere.

I bought it. The entire series on one box set. I love Melle's theme. I love the look. I love the reporter who cannot be shaken off a lead... not by fang or robot arm.
Darren McGavin, who played Karl Kolchak, died last year. RIP.

Kolchak is the BOMB! I love it so. *sniffs* I miss him.
Total geek trivia: Chris Carter, creator of the X-Files show, was a HUGE Nightstalker fan. Darren McGavin had a cameo in the series as the guy that started the X-Files in the show. :D

Actually, all pretty common knowledge to X-Philes. Sorry.
But Frank Spotnitz, former X-Filer, did Night Stalker last year, a short-lived recreation of the Kolchak myth. It's also out on DVD....erm, all 9 (well, 10 if you count a 2-parter) episodes. And my GOD did it have Gabrielle Union. Very very lovely.
{/threadjack} Now, back to LOST conversations please..!

I don't think you have a clear read. It seemed you were correcting someone who didn't need correcting. Perhaps it's the word geek that set you off. Most people on this site freely admit to being geeks. I'm a D&D geek. You're an X-files geek. I wasn't trying to insult you.
Nor was queen geek Lilith. What she said bore no disrespect but I'm thinking that's the way you saw it, otherwise you wouldn't have added that sarcastic 'sorry' at the end.
Facts about Darren Macgaven might be nothing more than general knowledge to you... but you have to realize you could win big money on game shows knowing that stuff. Embrace your geekdom.
EDIT: You'll come to know that I never subtely insult anyone. I'm as direct as a non-stop flight and as subtle as a moose-sized nose zit.
