Savage Tide Adventure Path

Does anyone else think the Savage tide could be "Pirates of the Kong"?
With the last two summer movies being about an island with dinosaurs and pirates, it seems a little fishy.

oh, there's a little bit of that in here I'm sure - but at the same time, pirates and exploration and demons are all very solid and consistant D&D themes, and it's a real deviation from the previous two adventure paths.

besides, sitting down and watching the films you've named, I personally can't help but think "whoa, that looks like it would be totally fun to play that adventure..."

I saw the coinkydink, but was amused more than put off.

I'm like, "pirates and giant apes and dinosaurs. Cool."

Only timely :)

Wait... this is a bad thing how?

I mean, I described Savage Tide to one of my players as "Pirates of the Caribbean on Skull Island with Demogorgon" and he instantly became more excited about it than any other gaming thing since Eberron came out.

Besides, everyone knows that Jacobs' love of pirates and dinosaurs is way older than Jackson's Kong remake or Dead Man's Chest.

Yeah, being inspired by current pop culture is fine as long as the storyline and the situations are original. I know when I first saw LOTR I was reinvigorated to make sure to portray orcs as nasty and brutal instead of just disposable cannon fodder. Even though I was inspired, I didn't exactly steal anything from the plotline except my muse.

Yeah, I just don't want to see a Giant Gorilla in any of the adventures. A tribe of awaken Apes I can live with.

Given the enduring popularity of "King Kong" and the relatively newfound popularity of "Pirates," I hardly count this as a bad thing. King Kong was certainly a factor in inspiring Savage Tide (as it was for the original Isle of Dread), more so than you might initailly think, since the artists we have working on illustrating Savage Tide are the same people who helped design the look of Skull Island in the remake of "Kong." As for the Pirates angle... that's more of a coincidence; we started planning this adventure path close to a year ago, and although we were aware of the fact that there was a sequel to the movie due in the summer, we weren't sure when it would come out or that it would be as popular as it turned out to be. I for one am stoked; it tells me the world is ready for more pirates and more crazy monster infested islands!

Now... one thing to keep in mind is that there's a LOT more to Savage Tide than pirates and dinosaur-infested islands. Check out issue #138 for a sneak preveiw of all 12 adventures, including who's writing each one and also a lot of concept art.

In the end, Savage Tide is going to be different enough from Kong and Pirates that it'll stand or fail on its own, I reckon.

There are no current plans for a giant gorilla in Savage Tide. NOT that D&D hasn't already gone that route (Isle of the Ape, anyone?).

!!

You got Ben Wooten and the rest of those guys in on Savage Tide!

You win, James. You and Paizo. You win hard. I thought you'd won when my own beloved chupacabra got the Wooten treatment, but no... that was just a prelude to the ultimate victory that was just around the corner.

Seriously, this is why I cannot forsee the day that I let my subscriptions to either Dungeon or Dragon lapse.

I described the STAP to my players as Pirates of the Carribean and Cutthroat Island meets Kong in the Land that time forgot and added 'on acid' for some reason...

One players responce was:

'Way down deep in the middle of the Congo,
A halfling took an apricot, a guava and a mango.
He stuck it with the others, and he danced a dainty tango.
The demon said, "I know, we'll call it Um Bongo"
Um Bongo, Um Bongo, They drink it in the Congo.
The yuan-ti picked the passion fruit, the marmoset the mandarin.
The parrot painted packets, that the whole caboodle landed in.
So when it comes to sun and fun and dungeons in the jungle,
They all prefer the sunny funny one they call Um Bongo!'

Dont ask...

Yup; I'm really excited to see what they come up with for it; so far, the art for the first adventure and a big pile of concept art (of which we show of a little in issue #138) is all that's come in, and it's pretty awesome.

And of course, it's all thanks to our Awesome Art Director Sean Glenn, of course. I'm just along for the ride as far as getting awesome artists for the magazine is concerned.

Yeah - let's keep it to more normal monsters like 2 headed baboon demons with tentacle arms!

I say - speak for yourself! I would much rather get a 'Kong Moment' in Savage Tide than a tribe of awakened apes.

I have to add my two cents in here as I just got back from a local Drive-In theatre, yes there is still one in existence! I had not been to one in about 14 years or so, but anyhow we saw a double feature of Superman Returns and Dead Man's Chest, back to back! Geek-O-Rama!

Anyhow, I am totally excited about flavoring the Savage tides with Pirates of the Caribbean and King Kong (which I saw in an old 1930s theatre in another small town near here, $3 Sunday Matinee, they opened the curtains as the show began, and they even had an intermission, a life saver in a 3 1/2 hour long film). Both filmss I thourally enjoyed, had a great art direction and look (Oh no its the pirate Cephalopod!) and will add a nice amount of humor in my otherwise dark games.

So onward Dreadlocked Cephalopod Pirate, Kong Hunting Maniacs!!
The Savage Tides Call!!

Everyone keeps in mind that EVERYTHING in "isle of dread" (and also "isle of the ape") was highly inspired by the 1st "King kong" movie (the one from the 30s, I mean, by Schoedsack and Cooper).

And there are not many adventures with a "pirates and bucaneers" 's flavor in D&D.

In so, STAP should be great, enjoyable, fun and dangerous...

"Hail ho, fierce companions, we'll sail to the southern seas ! Give me rum to drink and hopes for treasury, and I shall sail 'til the edge of the world."

Hmm, i think this is a conspiracy leading back to Dragon #318 and that Jesse Decker has his devilish hands in it somehow. Remember the issue? Pirates, dinosaurs, ninjas... The 1st ninja to appear in Savage Tide will prove my theory! :D Maybe Decker is still pulling the strings in the background and using the poor Paizo staff as mindless tools for his claim at world domination... Raahhh! It's knocking! Gotta go...

Personally I think it's great to have these wonderfully visual movies so fresh in my group's imagination--it will inspire them when making characters and make visualizing the locations and people that much easier.

Not to be the anally-retentive movie geek, but Kong was actually a Christmas release.

Awakened ninja deinonychuses. It has to happen, doesn't it?

It will! And they'll at least have wooden legs and a parrot on the shoulder. Ahh, the horror! ;)

Ironic would be they should have a hook hand...

How about an Awakened Fiendish Half-Black Dragon Tyrannosaurus Ninja fighting an Awakened Colossal Half-Celestial Dire Ape Cleric of St. Cuthbert while the Dread Pirate Roberts climbs up the near by cliff to do battle with Andre the giant.

We have two drive-ins to choose from here in NE Illinois! And one is staying open past Labor Day showing classic movie weekends in September and monster movies weekends in October.

Now THAT's usin' the old noggin.

I for one am totally happy with the King Kong influence. It was seeing King Kong (the new one) that made me want run a 3.5 Isle of Dread adventure. Then I heard that the next adventure path was gonna feature the Isle and everything just fell into place.

As long as my players don't try to capture Demogorgon and transport him back to the mainland for a show, I will be fine. Thought that is a funny thought....eighth wonder of the world, indeed...

A great image! Demogorgon climbing the spire of the Wee Jas cathedral in Sasserine, swatting at militiafolk mounted on griffons, Lavinia Vanderboren grasped in one tentacle....
