The first Pathfinder novel in years promises a world-changing tale of epic scale set amidst the War of Immortals!
Gods are not meant to die. They're supposed to be immortal, too powerful to be struck down or wither to dust like the people of Golarion. It has been more than a century since Aroden, god of humanity, met his mysterious doom, and his death ushered in a new era of uncertain prophecy and turmoil—the Age of Lost Omens. Now another god has died, his death broadcast across the skies in a metaphysical projection of his murder reverberating over any world on which he was worshipped. And from his rent corpse falls the Godsrain, a torrent of the god's blood and divine essence. Those touched by this rain are blessed—some would say cursed—with a god-spark that imbues upon them mythic power.
Four veteran adventurers—the barbarian Amiri, the wizard Ezren, the cleric Kyra, and her wife, the elven rogue Merisiel—witness this calamity, and with their newfound mythic power find themselves on the trail of fell forces looking to capitalize on the chaos. Using their unique skills, nascent god-sparks, and even the firsthand blessings of one of Golarion's most potent deities, they must race against time and fate to prevent the greatest threat to Golarion and beyond from escaping an impenetrable prison. From fan-favorite author Liane Merciel (Hellknight, Nightglass, War of Immortals) comes a truly iconic adventure of high fantasy set in the award-winning world of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. Follow the heroes from the desert bazaars of Osirion to the heart of the permanent hurricane known as the Eye of Abendego, as they come to terms with their own mortality, the tenuous powers of the immortal gods, and the new world that unfolds before them in the wake of the Godsrain.

I wasn't expecting to get answers to big lore questions like couple names of gods Rovagug ate, why Eye of Abendego exists and why Ghol-Gan fell to ruin, but that was neat xD
But yeah, it is fun adventure to read I like, my only nitpicks is that I feel like resolution to villains feels about as fast as 1e boss fight combats(and one of them was pretty on the nose about his true identity xD) and that I feel like we didn't really get chance to see Merisiel's "normal" perspective since for most of adventure we are dealing with her insecurities regarding old Calistrian way of life and her having changed and learned to trust her friends, so while we get to see Merisiel's cocky side occasionally from outside perspective, her own point of view is for most part rather anxious.
Gods Aren't Meant to Die But They Shouldn't Be Ordinary Either (SPOILERS)
It's not bad, not terrible. Finished Godsrain a few hours ago and felt the need to write a brief review. While I have never had high expectations for RPG novels, I usually enjoy them or at least find them interesting. That’s not to say I didn’t with the story here, but I did struggle a bit.
The book has nuggets of excellent writing scattered throughout but suffers from the typical problems of RPG novels. By the story's end, the anticipated “Behold Mortals and Tremble for Doom is at Hand!” moment feels more ordinary and pedestrian than epic or awe inspiring. In short, the gods we know are shown to be essentially just empowered characters defeating an enormous monster without any absolute terror or horror behind the Great Devourer or its capture. It's all rather mechanistic.
I'll give it three stars for effort, cool lore dumps, and the thrill of seeing Mythic Ezren in action. However, the iconic characters are another issue.
Maybe I've been spoiled by the voice actors from the Pathfinder Legends audio dramas, but at times, they come across as shallow here, except for Merisiel and Ezren. Amiri's portrayal is out of place, and Kyra remains one dimensional throughout. Maybe we were meant to feel the way Merisiel felt? Perhaps. However, I did enjoy the brief moments between Meri and Kyra. Would for sure buy a much more grounded story about them.
And then there are the two Mythic Icons. The brief, offscreen defeat description was a letdown. I'd rather they hadn't appeared at all if it meant offering a proper, respectful take on their trials. Instead, they're relegated to side roles supporting the Big Four.
Anyway, if you're a Pathfinder fan and want more War of Immortals lore, give it a read.
Paizo, you have such great, deep, well thoughtout lore and world building. Please do yourselves and us simple folks a favor and continue the novels. You have such great characters that you shelved, like Salim Gadafar, the Atheist priest hunter that sold his soul to Pharasma... bring these characters back. Cheers
He's one of my favorites. I wish he showed up more.
Perhaps you should have told Amazon and some other folks. There it is still listed for november.
I will review it tomorrow in my stream ... but in german ;)
The review will be in german, the novel is in english.
No, there is no translation planed at the moment.
That said, any word on when the audiobook version will be avaliable?
We are having some technical difficulties getting the files uploaded to the Paizo store, but hope to have it available for purchase today.
It will be available on Audible and the Apple store once the files (submitted a few weeks ago) make it through their (frustratingly slow and opaque) review/QC process.
On other audiobook markets like the Google Play Store, the audiobook should be available on Nov. 5, along with the physical and digital version in the wider book channel.
