  • Extensive rules for building and running kingdoms, settlements, and armies, along with narrative-based rules for resolving mass combat encounters.
  • Eleven new alchemical items and spells to discover.

Great story, poor execution

2/5

The story and everything releated to it is 5/5 without any complains, can recommend it blindly.

BUT (and it's a big but)

The kingdom management system is broken. There are many homebrew rules for fixing it but as is it gets 0/5, getting an average of 2.5/5 (and in Pf2e we're rounding down).

What doesn't work in management?
Basically everything. Kingdom turns take way too long of session time, the whole process is tedious, and frankly, boring. It's such a wasted opportunity because this could be the best system, exported to all games all around. I hope that it will be reviewed and fixed in the future but for now either don't use these rules or implement Vance and Kerenshara fixes for it.

When Paizo fixes the kingdom management system, I'll be more than happy to give this game 5 stars, but for now I just can't. This game is about building kingdoms and this is an essential part of the adventure

Amazing adventure, s!#*ty subsystems

4/5

This product has so many things that I think we need to split up the rating into two pieces: the adventure itself and the rules.

The adventure itself is an epic story, lots to explore and very easy to customize. Nothing more to say here, it's the best 2e adventure by a mile. 5 stars!

The rules consist of armies and kingdom management.

Armies at their base level are incredibly uninteresting: you engage the enemy, then roll to attack. There's no strategy, no choices, no relevant positioning. You can't even flank armies out of the box. Many buffs are hard to keep track, some are relative (Guarding against a single army for a +2 to AC). Yes, you can give them Tactics, but those don't add enough to make it fun or interesting.

The feats and actions themselves are riddled with mistakes which makes it very hard to figure out how it should actually work. Recovering and moving armies takes way too much time in kingdom turns (e.g. 1 turn to recover 1HP of 4-6, moving 5 armies together can work out to 2 arriving on time while 3 get lost on the way). Balancing and encounter difficulty is on the GM and often not straight forward, especially because healing isn't free as in the base game. I just can't see how this system is supposed to evoke any sort of fun, even if heavily house ruled. 1 Star!

Kingdom Management suffers from being riddled with mistakes, bad balance and hard to track bonuses:

* Some feats and activities give you "useless" status bonuses
* Way too many kingdom activities that barely do anything interesting.
* Leadership activities don't scale below/above 4 players
* Structure item bonuses are basically impossible to use at the table without automation. You'll be dealing with 30+ different modifiers that apply only for certain activities and are overridden by capital bonuses if these are higher and some activities just don't get any at all, most notably the companion ones
* Kingdom XP rules are designed in a way that it takes ~13! rounds (4x 3 hour sessions) to level from lv 1 to 2
* No opponent or pressure that keeps things interesting
* No interesting, strategic choices. The CRPG gave you projects that competed with keeping the kingdom under control, this system has none of that push your luck.

At least the kingdom events are fantastic. 3 Stars.

Overall, the systems lack fun and take way too much time. Can we like get an official community play-test if an AP ships 50+ pages of rules?

I'm currently trying to find the Player's Guide for this version of Kingmaker. Where do I find it (if it's not the one for 1e that was released 12 years or so ago)?

Fairly new to the PF2 family, so yeah, hi everybody and here's the noob question: which books, beside AP and Companion Guide, are essentials for the GM to play? As much as I figured that would be Core Rulebook, Bestiary 1, LO World Guide and Advanced Player's Guide. Any other suggestions? ;)

It's worth saying that all of PF2's mechanical content is legally available for free via the Archives of Nethys, so you don't need any books. The Companion Guide is supplemental, incorporating elements from the Kingmaker videogame, and so isn't strictly necessary, and neither is the World Guide (as Kingmaker is mostly set in one corner of the River Kingdoms). You're fine with the core, the Bestiary 1, and Kingmaker itself.

If you're looking to have some fun, and insist on having physical books for everything in play, then I might recommend both Secrets of Magic (for the two classes it adds, Magus and Summoner) and both the Lost Omens Character Guide the Lost Omens Ancestry Guide (for a bunch of new options for core Ancestries and a bunch of weirder new Ancestries, too). The Advanced Player's Guide, as you mentioned, is a very sound investment.

As a GM, the most important books you'll want to have on hand in this one are these four:

Core Rulebook
Bestiary
Bestiary 2 (a LOT of the monsters in this book were chosen at the time to supplement creatures specifically showing up in Kingmaker, and as with monsters from the first Bestiary, we don't reprint full stat blocks for them)
Gamemastery Guide (Kingmaker uses a lot of the supplemental rules like Victory Points, Influence, Hexploration, and Research)

If your players use content from other books (like the Advanced Player's Guide) you'll need access to them, but there's not much stuff from anything beyond those four that you'll need to reference much.

The World Guide will help you get context beyond the pages of the adventure path, but isn't required.

Anyone know if or when this will be available in pdf? We've been looking forward to it for so long but our DM's visual impairment makes hard copy books not an option for him. He's SO EXCITED to run this for us and it would break his evil little heart to find out he won't be able to.

If you buy the PDF here, our Paizo Connect API will sync with the Roll20 Marketplace and provide a discount. (The amount of the discount is up to Roll20, but I think it is 1:1). If you buy the product on Roll20 the PDF will show up here via the Paizo Connect API.

Buying on Roll20 first(then get the PDF for free here) is a bit cheaper than buying here first then get a discount on Roll20.

Demiplane has theirs listed at 69.99 (their version of an online PDF and get the PDF here for free) at this point in time and hopefully all the Paizo accounts are linked up for Roll20 as they have had link problems in the past so one has to send a ticket in if it does'nt work day 1.

Loved the free chap 1 preview for free though, nice touch there!!

Generally, Paizo webpages are updated using the Pacific Time Zone (UTC -8).

So don't expect to see that link any earlier than that.

Hello, as much as I want to buy the entire product, I really only need the

"Extensive rules for building and running kingdoms, settlements, and armies, along with narrative-based rules for resolving mass combat encounters."

Is there a PDF with just the information in it? I run a lot of homebrew and one of my groups is in the middle of doing kingdom building. I was attempting to convert the first one over, but it was not smooth. I would rather not pay 49.99$ for only needing 10 pages or so.

I think these are part of the OGL and is going to be on Archive of Nethys when they get to update the site.

Those are on the free player's guide, you can find the link on this page

Just to note, as you can see from player's guide, its about 68 pages on kingdom building, settlements and warfare in total.

Hey,
I just went through the pdf quickly and wow !!! This is a huge work , I am impressed positively and eager to run it, though running it will be another challenge.

I'm just disappointed by the interactive map content and wonder if you the maps are not properly aligned with the document's frames. most images are of low quality, unusable on VTT.

Are you planning to update them ?

In early September, there was a change in Section 15 in the OGL on page 638. The book previously erroneously listed the entry for "Pathfinder Kingmaker Bestiary (First Edition)". This has now been corrected to the entry for "Pathfinder Kingmaker Adventure Path".

The new change seems to be an invisible change in the labels on the map of Oleg's Trading Post.

Roll20 has Pathfinder Kingmaker Adventure Path for VTT now and Foundry will have it in Q2 next year. We have published the PDF at the intended image resolution. PDFS are not sold for VTT use, per se. I am uncertain what you mean by "the maps are not properly aligned with the document's frames," but you should email Customer Service rather than post on the forums to request any product corrections. We still have stock. So restock orders need to go from you to the retailer to the distributor, then to us. That said, we are out of stock with the Companion Guide.

It's in the 24th spot out of the 120 Paizo products on Roll20 as most bought, VERY NICE!! Fastest mover I think for a Paizo product to date for Roll20, Companion guide in spot 56 most bought (popular)

For PF1, I guess you're out of luck.

I don't understand why adding PDFs is so expensive, aren't the PDFs basically the blueprints used to created the printed edition? And it's not like they have to be printed. Shouldn't they be free with a printed book?

No because that's not Paizo's business model. PDFs for free is a perk for subscribers, or in this case for people who backed the project.

It costs x thousand dollars to make a paizo book. They divide that x thousand by all the books/PDFs they expect to sell, mark them up a bit* to generate profit and then price accordingly so that every purchaser pays a teensy bit of the cost.

If they were to give PDFs away with every book they'd lose some subscribers, lose some pdf sales and their "expect to sell" denominator would go down meaning the cost for other purchases would need to go up.

The free pdf with subscription is an incentive to get regular, direct sales which are reliable and at a higher margin than sales through other avenue. That's essentially a marketting program that paizo expect brings in more than it costs.

*:
The markup being different for different distribution methods.

Every side quest is listed as 30xp. Pretty sure this is a rather large typo. While 30 xp at first level might be okay (still pretty low). At later levels this isn't worth tracking.

In PF2E, every level is exactly 1000 experience points. So 30 xp is worth just as much at 19-20th level as it is at 1st-2nd level.
