Something gnawing at you? The undead nation of Geb gains most of its international trade from the export of food grown on zombie-worked farms, but lately one farm has been the site of a series of strange occurrences. Dispatched to investigate the problem, the player characters discover a grave threat to Geb's minority living population, bringing them to the attention of the insidious Blood Lords who rule the land in the name of their undead wizard-king. Defeating the wicked forces behind the plot is the first step on a long road to gaining influence and power in Geb, but if the investigators can't solve the problem to the Blood Lords' satisfaction, their first step may be their last!

Zombie Feast is a Pathfinder adventure for four less-than-good-hearted 1st-level characters. The adventure begins the Blood Lords Adventure Path, a six-part, monthly campaign in which the characters rise from skilled troubleshooters to join the Blood Lords who rule a land of the dead. The adventure also details the Great Factions of Geb, whose favors are key to rising in political influence, and provides a complete gazetteer of the town of Graydirge, where the adventure takes place. New monsters, spells, undead companions, and more round out the bountiful buffet of "Zombie Feast"!

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Pants Macabre

3/5

That front cover, blurgh. Then you open the book and see this amazing piece of art showing Geb being paraded through the streets of... Geb, I guess? Anyway, love the contrast between colour/energy and context. Great piece of art, does make me wonder why they went with 'Madame Toussards vs Animal Farm' for the cover.

Initial flip through very positive/exciting. Lot of cool art for unique characters & monsters. I am definitely looking forward to reading this one in more detail.

The main bad guy is a psychic vampire? Is that like an Energy Vampire from 'What we do in the Shadows'? I'm going to stop reading there and assume it is exactly the same. You made the main bad guy Count Colin Robinson? Well played, Paizo. Well. Played.

Shadow Ash and the process for making it sounds awesome.

Part One: Liberating a farm from rampaging zombies is fun! Spending the next god-knows-how-long repairing the damage and "evaluating crops" is kinda' not. I'm just relieved Paizo did not implement some manner of arbitrary Farm Repair sub-system. I'm guessing that Boss Cow is going to be a party killer, which might not have been a great idea so early in the book.

The PCs are given the deed to an abandoned manor house, to adopt as their headquarters. How the hell does a severed hand communicate by "squelching air from his gory wrist stump"?! I do like the ostovite redesign, much cooler than how they were presented in Tyrants Grasp. Ooh, just what every new home needs, a "thirty foot long trough of writhing viscera". That's sure to impress the neighbours.

Part Two: The Zon-Kuthonites tell the PCs self-harm is required, but don't begrudge anyone who refuses to do it. You cant have your horrible torture cake and eat it! Someone at Paizo has a real hard on for fancy cuisine, the amount of fluff text describing stuffed pidgeons and buttery pastry is positively self-indulgent. Also, what's the sudden fascination with banks?! It seems like every PF2 AP has an airship or a bank in it, sometimes both. Overall, I feel Part 2 could be skipped in its entirety with little to no impact on the story. The bank and the Bone Shard HQ might work better as side quests unrelated to the main plot.

Part Three: The final part of the book details a dungeon/pub crawl through a hostile brewery. It was kinda' meh. But that's not all, the party are then invited to the governor's mansion for supper and some pointless, inconsequential bureaucracy!

Conclusion: Zombie Feast makes a strong first impression, but that initial excitement does not survive a full read through. Three stars!!!

Macabre

5/5

OK, if you think that the cover with a cheery halfling and a monk kicking a zombie cow means comedy, you're dead (heh) wrong. This is some of the most macabre (and weird) adventure Paizo did since Strange Aeons. Combat-heavy, I hope the next episodes lean more into intrigue and politics, but if you're looking for a girlsy horror module, this one is 5 stars for standalone value. As usual, the verdict on the whole AP will wait until all six books are out.

All of the promotional materials and the Player’s Guide define this as a “non-Good” AP. I would probably recommend LN over CN for one where you serve the state, though.

The Player's Guide actually suggest someone of LG alignment is appropriate. Mentions in the alignment section that a good character might want to balance the wackiness around them with a desire to do their best for the people. And now I need someone to make this work and report their findings.

I think the Player's Guide made a mistake. Every other source has said that good alignment were poorly-suited for Blood Lords.

I doubt that it was a mistake, given the entire second paragraph of the Alignment Suggestions talks about how Good unto itself is viable because you aren't committing acts of evil and are fighting strictly evil or chaotic beings. It mentions before that paragraph that Good and Chaotic are generally poor choices. But of all the Alignments, I think Chaotic is about the only thing that is straight up no. LG works from the Lawful angle. NG is less so because it is literally just Good.

It's odd because the blurb calls for "less-than-good-hearted" PCs and the Player's Guide says "Chaotic or good characters are generally a poor fit for the Blood Lords Adventure Path," but then it says how good characters might enjoy "balancing the wickedness around them".

Personally, I think a CE ghoul would work better than a LG paladin, but I banned all Good or Chaotic alignments from my campaign.

I could see an LG non-cleric/champion deciding that the wheat must flow to prevent famine in the north and doing what they had to to make sure that doesn't get ruined. But they'd probably have to sit out the whole getting-promoted-into-the-hierarchy business.

Here's the thing to remember I think, the party isn't working against the governing body of Geb, they are looking to defend its institutions from individuals looking to overthrow them. Ignoring the fact that Geb as a government is evil, that is plenty reason for a good character to be involved, imo. Also, I'm personally of the opinion that the likelihood of there being undercover goodly characters amongst the ranks of the Blood Lords, attempting to change or dismantle it from the upper echelons, or at least balance it from diving any further into deprivation.

If we can have goodly Undead in the Knights of Lastwall, no reason their can't be goodly characters in the Blood Lords as well, imo. I certainly wouldn't allow it to be the focus of this AP; but I might allow a single LG character, and then maybe follow up with an adventure of further dismantling Geb as a whole.

I guess you could have a Good character in Geb to maintain the status-quo, for as bad as it is having a ghost king on the throne, it could be a lot worse if one of the more powerful Blood Lords managed to usurp him.

Well... LG is still not in "recommended, it's the only "appropriate". And the text use the words "might enjoy" and make clear that it would be a challenge:

player guide wrote:

[...]
In fact, good characters might enjoy balancing the wickedness around them with a desire to do the best they can for people.

"Appropriate" here is just barely above "not recommended".

They are mainly saying "We're not saying no, but..."

Fun fact, CE is completely missing from the table lol.

They are working on it. They got started on it a bit late this time, so they are a bit behind. But it will be released soon.

The Foundry module has been done since 07/30 the creators of the module have confirmed. It's in Paizo's hands now to release it. It can be assumed they're doing some kind of quality check but I really really hope it gets released ASAP this week and not pushed to the side for GenCon. It will kind of sour the GenCon experience in my opinion if the new game I'm excited to play gets delayed for it.

The Player's Guide agrees with you : CN = Not appropriate.

We are not ready to announce a date yet, but is it near to being ready.

Would it be possible to get an approximate date of when the foundry module will be released, in the same way that there is a release date of the next AP chapter?

We are working on making it live now. When it is live, we will provide a link to the new product page. Volume 2 should release date and date with the print volume.

Aaron, I think the reduction in the discount received for already owning the pdf is a very shady business practice. When it was announced that Blood Lords was not going to be released day and date with the pdf the new pricing structure should also have been announced. People bought the pdf under the assumption the old pdf would apply this is not the way to win the trust and support of consumers.

That took longer than we'd have liked, but it's finally live. Dead. Undead. Whatever.

Please note that, unlike our previous Foundry products, you have two options for buying Zombie Feast. When you purchase the module at full price for $29.99, you will automatically receive the PDF as well. If you already own the Zombie Feast PDF, you can follow this link to purchase the module for $19.99 instead.

As noted, we have changed the pricing model and discount structure for our Foundry VTT offerings. Now that we've produced a number of modules, we have a clearer idea of the costs involved in creating them and have made some necessary adjustments to our price points to ensure that we can continue to produce them at the same level of quality for what we hope will be many Adventure Paths to come. This analysis and discussion was also the cause of the slight delay in developing and releasing the first volume of Blood Lords; it is our intention that future Foundry VTT conversions of each volume in this and all other Adventure Paths will be released on the same day as any other available formats.

Finally, we realize that the change in discount structure is having the unintended effect of forcing people who bought the PDF on release day, expecting the same discount that was provided for the Outlaws of Alkenstar modules, to pay more in total for the PDF and Foundry VTT module combined than we intended. We agree that this is a problem, and we're looking into potential solutions.

I would be rushing to snap this up, but since I haven't received a shipping notice for July subscriptions (and shipping finished last week) or heard back on the matter from CS, I'll have to wait. I was hoping to start this with my group soon, but I guess a waiting a bit longer isn't terrible.

Andrew, I think the overall price of 29.99 why a little higher than I would like is still a reasonable price and I am glad you recognize the issue for those who already purchased a pdf.

Meh... a few dollars this time will not kill me (Especially since I am a PAID GM Anyway) ... Knowing the pricing structure going forward I think I can plan ... I was surprised the first ones were so CHEAP frankly compared to the work ... 19.99 is a fair price and I need the PDF and Hard Copy anyway to provide the level of Experience my players expect for the money they pay me... The work you guys put into this is GREAT already did a quick walkthrough and VERY happy.

On that page, there's two links. One point to the discounted version that you can buy if you already own the PDF:

Foundry VTT premium module product page (Discounted, only if you already own the PDF)
the other point to the version that also include the PDF:

Roll20 has not announced that they will make this AP, but they have announced this:

"In the coming weeks, we will add PDF support to Roll20’s VTT, giving GMs and players the ability to upload, read, share, and immediately play using any PDF in the VTT. No need to link anywhere else for your players!!

See a preview below of the PDF on VTT experience we will soon be rolling out in beta."

Thanks for the reply. That's too bad.

I don't agree with the reason for not sanctioning it. I'm playing it now, with 10 year olds with non-evil characters. The plot still makes sense, the Pathfinder society is trying to get a Pathfinder Lodge in Geb and Berline is providing that opportunity.

The horror element isn't too much (it really depends on the GM). It's certainly not worse than Rise of the Runelords, especially with the incestuous ogres (if you want, you can take that way way over the top)...

Then again, we're just playing the first book, and will probably head back to PFS scenarios afterwards. So I don't know what happens throughout the entire campaign, maybe there are evil actions to take, I don't know? But so far, not at all.

To me the reason not to sanction is because it's open ended and takes so long. Would be almost impossible to fit a book into an 8 hour slot.

That bank is deadly and so was the ostovite nest.

I actually had the privilege of asking the organize play coordinator this at paizocon this year. Bloodlords joins the ranks of Agents of Edgewatch and Hell's Vengeance as not sanctioned APs. The three share similar content that paizo simply would not want to be seen just being played in the average game store as someone's first exposure to pathfinder.

While I definitely think there are tons of ways that GMs can slightly tweak the campaign to be less gruesome and the start isn't incredibly violent. I think its reasonable to not want it run with every game store, especially when you can't vet every GM that comes through. A particularly uncomfortable situation from book 6 comes to mind but the general vibes reign throughout.

Bloodlords 6 spoilers:

In Ghost King's Revenge the players are given the opportunity to defeat a group of firebrands and recapture a group of escaped "forced laborers". While this is certainly not the norm in the adventure it isn't exactly an outlier and the tone these events set probably led to its exclusion from sanctioning.
