Something gnawing at you? The undead nation of Geb gains most of its international trade from the export of food grown on zombie-worked farms, but lately one farm has been the site of a series of strange occurrences. Dispatched to investigate the problem, the player characters discover a grave threat to Geb's minority living population, bringing them to the attention of the insidious Blood Lords who rule the land in the name of their undead wizard-king. Defeating the wicked forces behind the plot is the first step on a long road to gaining influence and power in Geb, but if the investigators can't solve the problem to the Blood Lords' satisfaction, their first step may be their last!

Zombie Feast is a Pathfinder adventure for four less-than-good-hearted 1st-level characters. The adventure begins the Blood Lords Adventure Path, a six-part, monthly campaign in which the characters rise from skilled troubleshooters to join the Blood Lords who rule a land of the dead. The adventure also details the Great Factions of Geb, whose favors are key to rising in political influence, and provides a complete gazetteer of the town of Graydirge, where the adventure takes place. New monsters, spells, undead companions, and more round out the bountiful buffet of "Zombie Feast"!

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Great Adventure

5/5

APs played: GM for books 1-6 of Extinction Curse, GM for books 1-3 of Ruby Phoenix, Player for books 1-2 of Edgewatch, Player for books 1-2 of Strength of Thousands

Book 1 of Blood Lords is a fantastic start to a cohesive, well written adventure. As a GM, I greatly appreciate it being written out in plain text at the start of the book who the main antagonist is and what their motivations are. It really helps for planning things in the long run and incorporating my player's backstory.

Book 1 is a solid introduction to one of the major factions of the nation as well as a few reoccurring NPCs. It really sets the stage and allows the GM through the Blood Lord the player meets to provide in character information on the setting and politics for the adventure.

The only criticism I have is the investigative part can be confusing on what to tackle in which order. The early game can also be incredibly deadly (i.e. a blade trap outright killed a player character).

Overall this is a really solid start to an adventure that me and my players loved and currently have as our favorite AP.

Well-written mystery with a distinct locale

5/5

When I first read this volume several months ago, I was fairly underwhelmed. Now, having run it myself, I have to admit I judged it far too harshly. This is a very fun introduction to Geb as a nation, with lots of fun NPCs to interact with and chances to delve right into what the country is all about. The investigation at the core of the volume does a good job dropping hints along the way without making anything too obvious, as well as setting up the long-term plot of the AP.

My only gripe is that some plot threads are set up with explicitly no conclusion, such as the pool of viscera in the manor’s basement and the lower floors of the bank. I appreciate the opportunity for GMs to get creative there, but with an uncreative GM like myself, it can lead to players getting too interested in questions I haven’t come up with any good answers to.

Overall though, excellent start to an AP, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Mike Kimmel contributes in the future!

A creepy module that encourages smart play

5/5

The good:
—A lot of encounter set-ups that explicitly encourage smart play — relying on hit-and-run tactics, luring mindless enemies into traps or away from where the party wants to go, employing environmental features to the player’s advantage. A great way to make combats more interesting and engaging.
—A lot of good “zombie movie” aesthetic fights in various places. Really helps to nail the mood.
—A lot of tasks, combats and interactions with NPCs which really highlight that the adventure isn’t taking place in your ordinary generic fantasy-land locale (Greyhawk, Waterdeep, Absalom, etc), but rather in Geb, where everything, even ordinary every-day stuff, is infused with a kind of twisted and horror-style vibe.
—The article on the city of Graydirge in back has lots of nice touches. The Death Ranches are a particularly nice touch — *really* creepy, but also utterly logical.

The bad:
—Not really “bad”, but a little disappointing this adventure didn’t make the “free archetype” option, restricted to undead archetypes, the default option. But easy enough for any GM to slap on.
—Also not “bad”, but the Greydirge bank chapter felt more like a standard dungeon crawl, and felt a little less immersive and different than most of the module. But it was fine.

The ugly/pretty:
—The cover looks a little “flat” and static, despite the entertaining scene it's depicting.
—The art and maps in the rest of the book are, as usual, very well-done. The page borders in particular are a wonderful gruesome addition that add a lot to the aesthetic feel of the book.

Overall, a great start to a creepy AP!

Overtuned

3/5

Not sure why this is getting 5-star botted. It has some issues.

Anyways -- it's an okay intro. Berline Haldoli is a standout NPC. But the bank is a real death-trap. Very dangerous. The last fight with the haunt involved can also be very hard if you don't knock out the cauldron immediately.

Things that can happen at the farm
- Murder cow. Yes, you're warned about it. But they also put it RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU, like the second thing you encounter.

Things that can happen at the bank
- Summoning rune that brings forth a CR 3 Cockatrice
- Petrification (from the cockatrice)
- CR 4 zombie horde that is I think one size too large
- Bone landslide trap that will probably insta-kill you at level 2
- Haunt with a very high DC

Things that can happen at the Crooked Whatever
- Ghoul Fever
- TPK at the last encounter

A+ art on this one. Geb's architecture is something else. Love how it feels halfway between Mesoamerican architecture and Dio De Los Muertos.

Some things failed to land for me, like the Arghun the Annihilator hand.

The bank was so frustrating that we nearly dropped the AP. Tight corridors, no real opportunities for strategy or bypass - just a lethal grind. At level 2 it will clobber you senseless. Consider giving the group level 3 before the bank, even though that's not what the AP recommends.

Hoping the next one is a little less combat-grindy.

Rip Tanner is a Bot or a troll

5/5

I haven't played this yet but I am giving it 5 stars to counteract rip Tanner, who is clearly a Bot or a troll of some sort. Keep up the good work Paizo.

I’m super curious about the outset of this AP, in terms of how the characters are actually employed. Are the Blood Lords formalized and centralized enough to have an organization of troubleshooters at their command, or are the PCs working for a specific one? Is there a government agency in Geb with adventurers on the roster?

They're working for a specific one. She's on the cover!

Exciting!

Will there be anything extra for those who pick an undead character for this or just what is noted in Book of the Undead (or might anything extra be in the Players Guide perhaps)?

Thanks

One thing that was mentioned during Paizo con was that there are situations/encounters in this AP that vary depending on if there are undead PCs in the group. And vary both ways. Having undead PCs will make certain situations easier and certain situations harder.

Now, if by "extra" you meant things like new feats, I do recall them saying new Ghoul feats in the 4th book.

When do we see the real cover for this one?

The cover is complete and was used at PaizoCon so it will be updated when the webstore team has the opportunity. Thanks for your curiosity and enthusiasm.

yep, I got a lot of that in the PaizoCon Discord when I asked it after a panel and the one and only James Jacobs replied with this :)

"Ron is the developer for that Adventure Path so he'll know for sure, but I did help write volume 4, and I made sure to include several encounters that play out slightly differently for quick or dead PCs. And in a few cases, different if there are, say, ghoul PCs. The end of the adventure itself doesn't require one to win, but some encounters will resolve different. Perhaps be more or less challenging."

LOVE this

Just wondering if there was an announcement made about AP price increase? ($24.99 to $26.99) I couldn't find it myself :-)

Must be that players guide "gnawing in you" to get out ASAP Aaron if I had to bet :)

(now have 3 players and myself, just 2 more to go, but the hunt for a GM still continues on Roll20...)

I believe the halfling is one of the Blood Lords, and your party’s employer. The Iconics appear to be fighting zombified farm animals, which tracks with this being a volume about a threat to Geb’s very important farms.

While the blaise expressions on Sajan and Seltyiel are a little weird, I'm not sure how this is "amateur crap". You seem angry over nothing. Are you mad that there's a halfling?

That is a garbage cover. The bland grey backdrop looks like they colour matched the wallpaper in a dentist's waiting room. I was expecting more red, cos' of all the blood the PCs will be lording.

If the AP doesn't end with Geb telling the PCs "Truly, in the end, it was WE who were the Blood Lords", I'm gonna flip a table.

I just wanna make it clear that while I'm poking fun, I don't think there's anything wrong with the art itself.

Geb is a miserable, crappy drab place, and I doubt that you're going to be respectfully asked to go kill zombie livestock by your superiors here -- it's probably more like "You live in Geb, you have no rights, I'm a Blood Lord, go do this thing or I'll turn you into a zombie your life basically sucks now".

Considering that the campaign starts at lv.1 and dedications are obtained at lv.2, I wonder how players will get access to undead character options, specifically referring to the ghoul, mummy, vampire and zombie dedications.

Will players have to die in the middle of the first chapter to raise as undead, or will it be something like it's been done in SoT with the wizard/druid dedication taken at lv.1? In that second case , that would mean that undead character will have more character building options, right?

On top of everything else that has been noted, the halfling is exactly the same as the halfling in one of the recent Frozen Flame covers. We are used by now to seeing such bad artwork inside Paizo books, but on the cover? Of Paizo’s flagship line no less?

Having thoroughly played and enjoyed Quest for the Frozen Flame, I don't remember any halflings on any of the covers. Did you mean the halfling iconic in the background of Frozen Flame #2 - Lost Mammoth Valley? Because that's just Ija.

Also, where is new Iconic zombie character? The world needs an Iconic zombie character for PF2!

Book of the Dead has a sidebar that says GMs can allow the PCs to take the archetype at level 1 and then it takes up their class slot at level 2.

I think the art does lack a feeling of motion to more properly resonate with the energy and power expected of PCs.

I definitely preferred the darker, more sinister looking coloration of the placeholder cover, but it’s not like this art is horrendous or anything. Also, the font that “Blood Lords” is in looks a lot better than before.

Yeah, I mean, the dynamism of the art isn't great, but the draftsmanship is perfectly fine, it's not like it's Actually amateur work, it's just a bit stiff. I really like the design of that halfling blood lord, very fun sunny-macabre, and I Really like the design of the AP title.

To paraphrase James Jacobs "criticism is ok if you explain it, don't come here and start shouting, you're not gonna get any attention from them"

But yeah guys, this cover is...off. It has everything that makes a PF cover but it looks lacking, maybe because there's no texture on the gray part? Also, like people said it lacks movement and it appears that character proportions are different for Sajan and Seltyiel, otherwise the rest is looking real good.

That is an odd cover. If the current image is the cover, the skull on the staff blocks a lot of the main picture. Also, she's all happy to be there, ya know...blood lords...zombie feast. Huge disconnect.
The art is good, it's just not the correct art.

The gray area needs some sort of texture.

I'll say that the covers of the last Starfinder AP (Horizons of the Vast) were so dark, it made them hard to really get the details.

Just my two cents.

Isn't she meant to be a Blood Lord? Things are probably pretty great if you're a Blood Lord in the Blood Lords AP.

Yeah, I love how the halfling looks. Very cheery demeanor, and then you look closer and she has a necklace of severed fingers.

I am kinda hoping this might be a tongue in cheek cover, "Come visit Geb, our peeps are quite happy and content, our live stock less so, but they don't count!!"

Then perhaps the next cover might juxtaposition into a more dark and "Blood Lords" those words conjure compared to this.

A bit surprised though no undead type characters were pictured though honestly myself. But maybe they don't want to undead the iconics perhaps.

Cover not expected but its fine

The idea of book cover art you don't like being "the beginning of the end" for a company is very funny. The blocking for the fight in the background is rather stiff and awkward, but generally I don't show the book covers to my players anyway (maybe at the end of the book) so I don't particularly care. I'm more worried that the halfling doesn't look particularly evil, and I personally hope that the party is working for someone evil / at least the vast majority of Blood Lords are.
But evil comes in all forms, and the quality of the actual maps, NPC illustrations, etc. matters most to me!
