(Note that you will need to have an active Pawns or AP subscription at the time the Pawn Collection ships in order to receive the PDF for free.)

High Quality, but Partial Coverage

3/5

MINOR SPOILERS FOR RISE OF THE RUNELORDS

If you don't know, "pawns" are double-sided images of monsters or NPCs printed on cardstock, designed to stand vertically with a plastic base that's the same size as the creature (so a Large-size monster with sit on a 2x2 base and its pawn will be bigger than a Small-size creature, for example). Pawns aren't as good as true three-dimensional miniatures, but they're a lot cheaper and are still better than simple flat tokens.

The Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection contains around a hundred and fifty pawns with sizes ranging from Small all the way up to the Huge. The artwork for creatures and NPCs unique to the adventure path comes from the Anniversary Edition hardcover collection, and it's fantastic. The set also includes several pawns for creatures that appear in the AP but aren't unique to it, and the artwork for these pawns comes from the creature's Bestiary entry. Each pawn is numbered and labeled, and there's a list on the back, which makes sorting pretty easy (I use ziplock bags). The set *doesn't* come with bases, which is an important point for someone who doesn't have any other Paizo pawn sets.

The physical quality of the pawns is high. I'm writing this review at the halfway point of the AP, so I've used the set in about 50 sessions so far--all of the pawns are still in good shape, with no tears, bent corners, etc. They fit well with standard Paizo bases and are quite colorful.

Perhaps the most important thing to ask is how well simplify GM prep: in other words, are the pawns that are included of the right type and number to handle encounters in the AP? I'm at exactly the halfway point of the AP, so I think I have a pretty good sense of how much coverage there is, and my verdict would be: it's very hit or miss. The set is great on including pawns for "bosses" unique to the AP and some NPCs--as a rough guide, if there's a full colour illustration of the monster/NPC in the book, there's probably a pawn included in the set. For more normal encounters, however, the set is unpredictable and the choices made of what (and how many) to include of different creatures doesn't follow a consistent pattern. For example, the set comes with 8 rat swarms which is plenty for any encounter listed in the book, but doesn't come with any shadows and only 1 yeth hound which complicates planning for those encounters in Thistletop; it includes 4 ogre pawns, which sounds great, but there's an encounter in the Kreeg Clanhold with ten ogres simultaneously. Etc. I'm not complaining so much as trying to make it clear that owning this collection (even along with the Bestiary pawn box) doesn't mean that every pawn needed for the game will be at your fingertips: you're still going to have to make homemade tokens or cobble together substitutes for many encounters. In addition, the collection doesn't include any creatures that appear on the AP's random encounter tables (unless those creatures also appear in planned encounters).

In the end, I can give a partial endorsement to the collection. It contains enough to make it worthwhile, but not so much to make it a must-have.

A great set if you are adding to the Beginner Box

5/5

For a players who are just starting out, and may have the Beginner Box, this is a really great incremental augmentation to a growing pawn set, and is a very affordable, and exciting addition.

This Pawn set has the benefit of a good ratio: a handful of NPCs, Some good monsters, and cultists, a clutch of named characters including Karzoug. The medium monsters are mostly giants due to the ROTRL story path, and the huge monsters are giants and spiders. But, what this set has is Goblins Galore! C'mon! You need Goblins!

IN CASE ANYONE READING THIS DOESN'T KNOW: The ROTRL pawn set does not contain the core iconics! Valeros and the gang are in the "Pathfinder Pawns NPC Codex Box" (The Beginner Box includes Merisiel, Ezren, Valeros, and Kyra), and the Skulls and Shackles Iconics are in - wait for it - "The Pathfinder Pawns Inner Sea Pawn Box". Also, like the other reviews said, there are no bases.

Nice addition to the RotR campaign

4/5

I like the set a lot, even though i comes without bases. I have some bases from a completely different (board) game that I use until I get my hands on one of the Bestiary boxes.

The missing 5th star is because many of the drawings extends to much outside the actual figure IMHO.

waste of money

1/5

These are essentially useless unless you already own a Bestiary set, or feel like shelling out another 20-odd dollars for bases.

Missing pawns

3/5

this is a good set of pawns if you are planning on running the Rise of the Runelords adventure path but i cant help feeling disappointed on the exclusion of some minis (like the bunyip, Tangletooth(Gogmurt's pet),the rune giant, the goblin ghast)but it's still cheaper than minis

OK, I like these. Heck, I like ALL the pawns. But I have a silly question. In order for to be eligible for the PDF, you have to have pre-ordered the pawns and have a PFAP sub...does that mean that the items have to show up on your account page as pre-ordered, or can they just be in your sidecart?
To wit: My Skull & Shackles pawn set shows as pre-ordered, but the Bestiary Box and RotRL pawns are shown as in my sidecart. Do I need to do something different, or does this count?

Hopefully, the above is clear...

PS. In case anyone's curious, there are 154 total pawns on a count of 81 separate pawns. Even better than initially advertised...WTG Paizo!

We just got the printer proof of this in, and it's really impressive. You're getting a lot of value for your money on this one—it weighs in at more than a pound and a half!

So excited for pawns, pawns, pawns.
Any chance i can sell part of my soul for
a Carrion Crown pawn set sooner than later? I suppose not...

And in the 6th paper minis set!

They're in the RotR Pathfinder Battles set as a common, so I suppose you could pick up some singles?

Ninja'd while finding the link!

For those considering printing your own - you can get a pack of self adhesive sticker sheets at Staples/ Office Depot, etc. These will go through a standard printer. After printing, peel a page off and stick it carefully on your cardstock and cut them out. I use a set of white comic book backing boards and it worked well.

Silver Crusade

I will one day run RotRL, and this is on my to buy list pretty much as soon as it comes out. I'll pick it up at my FLGS.

Out of curiosity what, if any, markings distinguish redundant pawns from the bestiary? For example, the 4 goblin warriors from the bestiary with the 10 in the RotRL set. I know that they are individually numbered but I am wondering if there is a difference between sets.

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

The 4 goblin warriors from the Bestiary Box share one piece of art, and are distinguished from one another within the set by having their token number, 18, in different colored ovals. Of the 10 in this set, 4 use that same art, 3 use a different piece of art, and 3 use yet another piece of art; these have their token number, 5, in different colored ovals.

So, compared to the Bestiary Box, 4 of these are distinguished by having a different token number, and 6 of them are also distinguished by having different pieces of art.

I think it's likely we'll try to add some kind of expansion symbol to sets after this, but space is hard to find...

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the Expansion number. It's a non issue to me. A goblin is a goblin, and bothering to differentiate which came from what set seems pointless when I'll just dump "baddies" in one bag, and "Good guys" in another and mix sets, and only bothering to seperate when I know I'll need a specific monster into my "pending use" bag.

Although it doesnt really matter at the table, the expansion symbols are of value to me as an RPG collector.

Not as much value as a subscription, of course. *inno*

I guess that makes sense from that POV. I look at this kind of stuff as a tool and nothing more. I would not object to the expansion # to clarify, but I do not wish extra stress on the Paizonians.

What I'm really wanting to know is just exactly how much of the art will be reused from the Bestiary Box and how much will be original? If I'm just getting the same old goblin, ogre, giant, etc art over and over again I'd be less inclined to get pawn set expansions. I saw goblins mentioned above but could we get some more exact details on duplicates please?

Although i am new to the series, i know that there aren't all the runelords in this and there is no rune giant. Is this to encourage people to buy some things from WizKids?

No, I think it had more to do with the practicality of fitting huge and gargantuan pawns onto the sheets that minimizes waste. Additionally, they have bases for small, medium, and large. There were cost issues with having to make larger bases, I think.

But, there are there are Paper Minis to fill in the gaps of what you're missing.

Grand Lodge

Gargantuan minis just would not be feasible as a pawn as to how they are currently implemented. They would have to retool it somehow in order to get the Rune Giant involved.
Paizo is not the type of company that would force you to buy something that you would not want to. They would encourage you to buy something as they are a company that wants to make money. But only as an option but they did not plan this intentionally.

Liberty's Edge

My bad, there ARE huge pawns, nothing bigger, sorry.

RotRL Spoiler:
the reason there is only Karzoug and no other Runelords in this set is that he is the only Runelords that you fight in the campaign.

oh really thanks, if that's the case, ill probably buy this, in a few months, and find the rune giant, on amazon or troll and toad. I would rather have nearly every enemy in Rotrl as a flat piece, than get about 8 for the same price in plastic figure form.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! My sidecart now says this won't be shipped until September. :-(

I noticed that Embers is not on the pawn list. Is there a reason?

I'd really like a pawn of the Sandpoint Devil, too. It seems like it would make sense location-wise...

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

We can't provide a pawn for *everything*, so at layout time, some amount of sacrifices have to be made (usually starting with things we don't have artwork for).

The Sandpoint Devil's not in the set because it's not part of a scripted encounter in the AP.

But Vic, Embers is a unique critter to the AP. His absence will be felt, particularly since there isn't any other pawn in the collection capable of filling in for him.

Paizo Employee Chief Creative Officer, Publisher

As a dire bear, Embers can be represented by pawn 147 in the Beginner Box. Since the Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection is meant to work in concert with that base set (which, after all, has the bases you will need to use the pawns in the collection anyway). So if we could add a specific Runelords pawn by not repeating a basic monster from the Bestiary Box, we generally went with the creature in the Pawn Collection.

These really came in handy for a game I recently did. Also for those interested in boardgames, Last Night on Earth has zombies that fit perfectly with regular sized minis and worked good for one of the parts of this adventure

Speaking of bases...is there a plan to have a blister pack of a few more bases? Like 1 huge, 3 large, 5 or 6 medium and 5 small?

That would be good to have as a plan when people have been using the boxes for a while and the bases get worn/bent/broken/lost.

ZetaGilgamesh wrote:

I thought I saw an answer that it was being discussed.

On a side note: I thought the "small" was using the same base as the Medium. Didi I miss something?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

We will have additional bases available separately soon. And Small tokens are 1" wide, same as Medium.

They will fit swell in the large Bestiary Box. This product is technically an extension of that one, which has all the bases anyway. Of course, you could skip that product, buy bases separately (once we figure out the costs), and keep them in a shoebox, as you suggest. :)

No bases other than the ones that I choose to buy is perfect for me. I'll be looking for some kind of multi-compartment craft box within which I can store them alphabetically. Or maybe I'll subdivide the BB with cardboard strips.

Any chance of sets of labels for conditions (dazed, etc.), with Post-it style adhesive on so they can be reused, to go on to the bases or pawns? Then back onto the card that they came on for storage?

Edit: Typo, *blush*

If you live near a Staples check out their "really useful box" line of storage containers...they are plastic with snap down handles to hold the top in place and offer way more protection that a cardboard shoebox. They come in various sizes too. I've been using them to store my plastic minis but will also use for my pawns as well.

Also available at Office Depot, Office Max, Orchard Supply Hardware, Amazon, and various other places.

See their range here.

We've got lots of them for our gaming odds and ends, ranging from the tiny (0.07l) to almost 20l (and there are ones larger than that). They come in different colours, so we can distinguish between my stuff (blue), my wife's stuff (purple), and shared (clear).

The 4l and 9l ones are the right size to take standard letter-size paper, and also have optional inserts which we use for organising miniatures.

As someone coming back to RPG's after a long hiatus, I truly appreciate the pawns you guys are making. There is no way I would have wanted to invest in the metal mini's just starting out, although I like the looks of them, and for a character I use them.

For running games, however, this saves me alot of money and at the same time I get to enjoy npc representation in my games. Keep it up, I really hope the other bestiaries will one day include these as well.

I just purchased the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition, but I'm going to wait to run it until this product is release.

Though, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about the Rune Giants...

So here is my question, I want to run a RotRL campaign, and I would like to use pawns. Can I pick up the Adventure Path, this product, and get playing, or are there key things missing in this that would require me to buy the Bestiary Box?

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber; Pathfinder Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Well, the RotRL pawns don't have stands (because it assumes that you will use the Bestiary pawns) although they are planning on selling stands seperate at some point in the future.

However, they didn't replicate any pawns where the Bestiary pawns could stand in. The only example I can think of off the top of my head is the bear animal companion Embers for Hook Mountain Massacre. There is no pawn for her in RotRL because they assume you will use the bear token from the bestiary box.

You will be happy with it. I not only loved the artwork but the quality of the pawns is very high. With only a little care they should last for a long time.

Please do. It would make storing, retrieving, and re-shelving large numbers of pawns much easier.

This may already be answered, but I have not scoured the messageboards. Why is the rat swarm listed as a small figure when the spacing for the bestiary listing is 10'x10' which is large? Do I just stick the small token on a large base? Just wondering.

Swarms can reshape themselves from their square space to a line (which is why they're like that).

Because swarms are designed to occupy the same square as the character they are attacking, I would recommend forgoing the stand for them and lay them flat against the board. They should occupy exactly 1" square each, so they will work the same as token indicating a trap or fire. (Now that's an idea for another pawn set.)

The cardboard pawns are actually better than miniatures when it comes to swarms.

Liz Courts wrote:

Liz, as noted previously, that was the rule in 3.5 but the Swarm Subtype wording makes that read is if only large swarms (made up of smaller standard swarms) are able to re-shape. As written, a standard swarm is always a square or cube 10 ft on a side. That might be worth re-wording in a future errata document.
