My concern about this and similar products is simply the marketability of the idea, and I'm honestly curious where it is geared towards. From the first few posts, it seems that cost is going to push many people away from the product. Having the minis would be a nice souvenir, assuming RofRL worked out for the group, but that may be the only thing that might appeal to many people. Most people have already played the campaign, so why would they buy the set? The fact that the minis might/are random was one of the big negatives about the old plastic D&D minis. I guess if you need monsters for your campaigns, well then these new minis can fill in for some of the bad guys (although unlikely as monsters constantly change from Adventure Path to Adventure Path). As was pointed out, the ideal thing would be to time a release like this at the same time an Adventure Path releases. I think then sales would likely quintuple and then quintuple again after those buyers said how awesome the minis are and how they have enriched their campaign

I dont have any special knowledge, but it would be hard to imagine it not being a carefully thought out strategy. I'm pretty sure they made veiled references to this set close to a year out - so it would be the spur of a very long moment.
Although you're right that many people played the campaign the first time around, the launch of this set was clearly timed to coincide with the re-release/updated anniversary edition. I suspect that many who may not have played it the first time around will be keen to give it a run - it's the archetypal "Classic" AP (both in theme and temporally). There also seem to be a reasonable number who are going to run it for a second time. It's hard for Wizkids/Paizo to time a release for an AP's launch (although the next set is going to launch pretty close to the conclusion of Shattered Star, so that's not bad) - since they dont know what figures are going to be needed. As I understand it, the last couple of instalments of the current AP hasnt yet been completed (or has only just been completed).
Having said all of that, there are very few figures from this set which arent of use in a more generic miniatures collection. I would grab this even if I werent planning on running RotRL. It's a pretty good selection of minis to complement both H&M and the old DDM sets.
On the pricing issue - it doesnt actually matter if the number of cases sold to consumers drops, providing they go out and spend a similar amount on bricks from retailers. Instead of selling 2 cases at $275, Paizo sell 1 case to a retailer who then sells a couple of bricks and some boosters to one customer and a similar amount to another. The customer has got about the same number of minis for about the same dollar outlay - it's just been a more indirect route.
(That's all assuming people are making rational choices, which is probably false. It's hard to make any kind of economic analysis without a few false assumptions though...)
I appreciate your response and honesty as well. It was more of a sticker shock thing at the time as it was spendy. I KNEW that it was not your fault and it was the pricing basically by NECA/Wizkids and not yourselves.

Having seen what distributor pricing is on these, it sounds like the problem isn't NECA/Wizkids or the distributor, but your FLGS choosing not to discount.
Too many retailers absolutely refuse to consider selling at any price point other than the suggested retail.

Considering all the product that came out WITH the anniversary of Paizo, this was far from spur of the moment. There is a lot of generics that can be used from this set. Having it my greedy little hands right now as both GM and player I would have bought this regardless of the name on the box. There is some obvious pieces that will get little use outside of Rise of the Runelords, but these are few and the sculpts make it so you still want them though :)
Now I have to say though that stating that "most" people have run Rise of the Runelords could not be further from the truth. It came out at a time when there was a lot of transition from one Adventure paths to another with Age of Wyrms and the like being out and the hard cover for the Cauldron one coming out around the same time. People had a lot of choices. Now with the reduex of RotRL, it is great to have it. I am sure sales are doing well and I have bought the new book myself and am actually considering the Collectors edition as well.
One should not just assume that it was spur of the moment because even from an outsiders point of view with the amount of product and support for this, it is obvious it is not.
One case of standard boosters + rune giant, and I have all of the set other than the huges. For some reason, I ended up with up to 5 "uncommon" minis (Jakardros, I'm looking at you!) and only 1 of a common and an uncommon (Goblin Commmando on Goblin Dog and Faceless Stalker). It was down to the wire for Special K, but in the next to last booster he made his grand entrance.
Even though my group is about 1/3rd into book 4, I felt like I really needed this set. I don't regret having scoured multiple other metal mini sites to get (and paint) just the right mini for the path so far, because the minis from books 1-3 are mostly generic enough to see tons of use. Almost all of the named NPCs work just fine as other NPCs, and the monsters are mostly generic enough (goblins, bugbears, kobolds, ogres, giants, golems, etc).
My only real regret is that this didn't come out months ago when I NEEDED a dozen ogres! Between this case and the H&M, I NOW have enough to do book 3 without having to paint so many!

I have to say I am a bit disappointed in the point of sale that the FLGS has to sell the cases at. I ordered a standard booster case and a huge case from my FLGS and I paid $511.68 and $158.32 for the Huge case.
A couple of points here. I subscribe to Pathfinder through Paizo as you can tell so I can support my favorite lines and Pathfinder in general not to mention getting the discounts I do through having the Adventure Path line along with the free PDF's. But I want to support my local game store as well too. IN doing this I ordered the minis through them thinking I would be getting them at $519.98 and not the $661.62 that I ended up paying. With the shipping discounts and the like I could get the case bundle from Paizo at a MUCH MUCH cheaper price then the local game store.
I would basically save nearly $133.64 and that is WITH the shipping added in to it (or close to it).
I am not sure what the benefit it is to buy it through the local game store at all is as opposed to buying it through Paizo. My FLGS was upset to say the least!!!! (The Source in St Paul MN) as they are thinking why should they support any of the miniature line now considering they feel like they are either ripping their customers off or are getting ripped off.
If the brick and mortar stores HAVE to buy them at a cost that forces them to sell them at a non-discounted price, I have a feeling you are going to loose the stores as a customer in more ways then just miniature lines. The Source was starting to question why they are even carrying the books at this point... I am hoping it is a NECA/Wizkids thing and not a Paizo thing as I told them, but if it is a Paizo thing this could really really go a long way to ruining some good customer service that you had previously with them.
Not to mention as a customer you are coming dangerously close to loosing me and some friends as customers too. To see the $519.98 cost on the site and then to go to the local store and get charged $661.62 is way beyond ridiculous!
My local store had no problem giving me the 15% discount - without me even asking. I was happy and they were happy as they turned a nice profit on merchandise that was in their possession for only about 3 hours from when the UPS guy delivered it to when I picked it up after work. It seems like your store just didn't want to give a discount.
The only downside is that the distributor (Alliance) allocated the Rune Lords so my local store has not been able to get any yet. Hopefully they will get at least 1 as I am first on the list of preorders.

My Rune Giant mini his skin seems like a dark grey than the greenish hue shown on the blog preview.
I just picked up one of these, and I'd agree with you that the colour is not what I expected - far more grey than green. Not that I'm complaining, mind you - just confirming your observation.
I'd been planning to buy one at my regular game store, but they didn't order any. Fortunately I found one at a different store nearby where I occasionally play PFS. I had signed up to play tonight, but the GM never showed :-( But spotting a couple of Rune Giants on the counter (and being able to get one using store credit) meant my trip wasn't entirely wasted.

I received the rest of my minis today. I really like the Rune Giants and this is the first gargantuan humanoid (without wings) that has been produced. I am very happy about that. I got my subscription three and ordered a couple of more from Paizo today. The least expensive ones I could find are the ones on the Paizo site.

As someone who is a casual gamer I have been continually stunned and amazed at the number of people who post that they've purchased multiple cases whose total cost are in excess of the average monthly mortgage. But people have done so...proving that a market indeed exists for such a product.
I popped into my FLGS yesterday to pick up a Rune Giant. I also bought one standard booster in the hopes that I would get lucky and snag something cool. (I didn't). Late last night I ordered all of the goblins and a few figures that could be used to represent PCs. And that is likely the last of my purchases from this set; as $15.99-$24.99 is too steep a price point to qualify as an "impulse" purchase.
As promised, here are some details:
(1) I did indeed get the complete set, but it was down to the wire. The bugbear hero didn't make his appearance until the final box.
(2) The figures are indeed really cool, with the notable exception of Ameiko. I just don't like what they did with her, which is sad, since one of my players is in the process of romancing her.
(3) My players LOVED the secret reveal! They got attacked by a group of goblins in the woods, and when I pulled out two mounted goblins and four foot goblins, they got very excited and there was a brief pause in the game as I showed off some of the figures. (Even better, after Tsuto's epic fumbly performance in our game, the first player of the night who fumbles gets the "Silver Tsuto Award" and has to sit there with the figure in front of him or her until the next fumble. And since we have spares, we're going to paint one silver and glue it to a pedestal.)
(4) The repeats are downright annoying. While having 3-4 'generic' figures doesn't bother me at all (4 goblin dogs, 3 goblin commandos, etc.), getting 3 Tsutos, 3 Kaven Windstrikes, and 3 Khalib Dekantis means I'm going to be on eBay after all.
(5) I realize this is a "then why did you buy it?" complaint, but omitting very pretty figures (Gogmurt, Tangletooth, and Elyrium from Burnt Offerings, for example) in favor of iconics I'll never use (Seoni and Harsk) doesn't appeal to me.
All in all, given the high price tag and the random distribution, if someone were to ask, "Would you buy another of these?", I think the answer would be, "No, unless I could get an exact list of what I'm getting." Once my budget recovers, I'll be looking at more generic Pathfinder cases for more "shock troops" (goblins, orcs, kobolds, etc.), but I'm definitely not going the "random case" route again, because I prefer to know what I'm buying.

EDIT: Responding to the question, "Who are these cases geared towards?", I give myself an allowance of $200/month to do with as I will. I work from home and prefer a night of board games with my kids over going out, so I don't spend a heck of a lot of money outside of gaming. So 1-2 battle cases a year is within my means, and, if it adds to my player's enjoyment as much as this case did, I really can't complain. (The Silver Tsuto Award is going to be around for years to come, I'm afraid...)

I heard somewhere that every booster of RotR that Paizo took to Gencon was sold. Sold Out! Based on this information, and to answer your question, such product is geared simply toward attendees of Gencon. Or like myself, one that would have really liked to have been able to go to Gemcon. So for those out there that would have really like to have gone to Gencon, but was unable to for whatever reason, please raise your hand. Since I cannot see all the hands raised, I will just have to guess there are many, and I mean MANY hands raised out there.
Wizkids has enough faith in the line that they are already working on a third set. So there appears to be plenty of people buying this product, including me. I am anxious for my cases to arrive. It looks like they have planned this very well. So it does not appear to be any cause for concern.

Picked up some boosters. Would have liked more and a rune giant, but my FLGS was messed over. They recieved only one brick out of a much larger order. Too bad too. There were several folks who would have liked to buy them but could not.
Say, I just received my case+huge booster+rune giant from my FLGS last night, and I spent half the night opening them and... um... I was wondering if anyone else experienced my problem.
I started developing a terrible headache halfway through the night, and couldn't figure out why.
It was only once I'd opened all of the boxes that I stopped and sniffed a couple of them and they smelled intensely like... well... spray-paint/fixative or something like that.
Now, I'm hyper sensitive to the smell of paint fumes or chemical fumes, which is why I never got into painting metal minis, or oil paints, or spray paint. It's probably also why none of my friends (who were there helping) noticed it while I was getting a splitting headache.
The confusing thing is that I never had a problem with the grand opening of my case of the Heroes & Monsters set. Did something change in the... I dunno, the paint formula or anything from the last set? Should I expect it to fade? Should I air them out? They're such awesome minis I'll feel awful if I can't use them.

Yeah unboxed mine, near as I can tell I got a complete set which is awesome. I agree with a poster up above a bit would have liked seeing less repetition amongst some of the named uncommons (but still useable as fighters, wizards, etc). Cheesy as it sounds could have used a little more commons! Only ended up with one skinsaw cultist and two ghouls...something I'll remedy with a couple of pickups online in singles. All in all though nice set...still say it's spendy but nice all the same =)

My case came today and I am happy to say that I got a full set. I was a little worried as Karzoug came out of the second to last box but everything was there. As has been mentioned it would have been nice to have more multiples of plain common figs rather than 3 Malfeshnekors,2 Shalelu Andosanas, 2 Ameiko Kaijitsu, etc. I recieved multiples of a lot of named uncommons. More goblins and bugbears and less multiple npcs.
Although I do get that with random boxes of minis you want the npcs to be fairly available for those who don't buy in bulk.

I did notice a unique smell while opening H+M. RotRL hasn't arrived yet, so I can't comment.
Did you open them in exactly the same environment? Perhaps you had a window open previously, or there was more of a breeze outside?
I'd recommend leaving them out for a while in a room that you can ventilate while you are not in it. UV from sunshine can also help to break down volatiles. Good luck.
Well, my order was finally shipped out yesterday. There was apparently a glitch in their (Paizo’s) system where one of my shipment payments was declined for whatever reason (they said it was their side, not mine) and it caused my order to be stuck in "pending" status.
But they fixed the problem. I actually spoke with Cosmo. He was extremely sorry on the problem and even credited me $20 to purchase in the store or to go towards one of my subscriptions. He also even sent it out UPS with tracking (which I did not choose as an option, I had the cheapest shipping selected). This is why Paizo retains my business. Accidents happen with any company, but it’s how the company resolves the issue is what counts.
I’m hoping I will receive my order tomorrow or Thursday.
@Drakli-I did notice some relatively strong fumes from my first case that I opened. But it wasn't to the extent it gave me a headache. I will need to go back and see if they still have the strong fumes.

I noticed a smell... I think they heated up the plastic trays then pressed the mini into them, makeing the tray form fit to the mini's base better, and then immediately put it in the box.It smelled exactly like when you shrink wrap things, and seemed to be concentrated on the base

Just a quick note to let you know that hypersensitivity to paint fumes shouldn't stop you from getting into painting metal (or plastic) minis. The paints most commonly used for miniature painting are water-based, and have zero fumes. The primer and sealer are another matter, but thanks to the awesome Reaper kickstarter, they are about to expand their pre-primed plastic line by a few hundred models, including some from the Pathfinder line. Maybe seal with a mask outdoors or get someone else to seal them? You can seal a ton at once, or maybe do the stain-dip method to seal them. They also make brush-on sealer, but I think they still might have an odor and I personally don't care for brush-on sealers.
At any rate, miniature painting can be a relaxing and fun hobby, and I'd hate to see someone miss out!

It is possible that that happens at the factory now and then, but it also stresses the importance of making sure that when you buy a case, it's factory sealed. I've already read one report from a buyer whose retailer opened cases and then reassembled them from mismatched bricks, meaning all of their case customers would likely get incomplete sets.
(Any case you buy from paizo.com is factory sealed.)
Everything arrived today and the set looks AMAZING!! The only thing that raised an eyebrow for me and my wife is one of our boosters did only contain 3 figures. Mistakes like this happen in the factory I assume.
EDIT! Despite one of the boosters being shortchanged in the figure department we still did manage to obtain the full set.

It also makes sense if my case got mispacked cause I have a common and an 3 or 4 uncommons I only got one one of
I bought a brick from the FLGS and picked up singles from Auggies. Overall, this is an exceptional release. The paint jobs on the monsters are uniformly excellent but the pc-type figures suffered from sloppy painting or too much wash. Seoni's face tattoos obliterate any detail on the face; too much paint is applied to Ameiko's face, filling in her mouth; Kavin received too much wash and now has a half-flesh colored/half-grey wash face.
My favorites from the set are the ogres. The standard ogre is, to me, the correct size for an ogre. The Brute and the named ogre are taller, about hill giant sized, but they represent a bigger/tougher ogre. We now need a female ogre to round out the tribe. I also like the goblins. I wasn't keen on the Paizo design for goblins initially, but they've really grown on me.

Pffffffttt if I told you guys the cost of international shipping on my 3 case bundles, you'd all go pale.
This is why, for mini's, I preorder through a FLGS, that and dice are the only thing I don't really get from Pazio direct, but the cost of shipping is from PF + duty more then obliterates the savings

This sounds like a mistake to me. I saw people were having this issue, so when my boyfriend and I opened up the standard case last night I told him to keep an eye out for any 3 mini cases.
We didn't get any, luckily.
These are just... amazing. Had a blast opening them and getting amazed with the detail in some of them.
My only complaint is that one of mine hadn't been well attached to it's base and had come off it. It was undamaged however, and is something some super glue will easily fix with minimal effort.
Now I have to figure out where to put all these! There are so many.
I've also been pondering what the best way to transport them would be. What is everyone else using? Any suggestions for good and inexpensive cases for these?

Our second shipment from WizKids, which has the cases we will be opening for singles, hasn't shown up yet. It was supposed to be here around GenCon timeframe, so it is late. We are trying to figure out where the heck it is. Once it arrives, we will open up the cases ASAP and get them up and blogged. Sorry for the delay!

MY Complaints:
1. I got 1 ghoul from a case.
2. I dupes on iconics and others I don't need.
3. I only got 4 goblins. The ones I will use.
4. Please offer singles as ebay prices are stupid.
5. Please offer singles as I would like more ghouls, as you usually encounter more than one in a game.
6. Please bring the price of the next set back down to earth.

I really don't get this one. Seriously, the price per mini is very low for the quality, especially considering the places willing to sell cases significantly below MSRP. The price is competative with lower quality products. In order to reduce it, there are only a few options.
1. Reduce the size of the sets. This wont affect price per mini but will reduce the cost of the box. Do you really want fewer minis?
2. Ensure that commons are cheaper to produce than rares. This means that they will need to have fewer paint steps and less complicated sculpts. This is true for many now, but not a universal rule. Also, it would likely reduce the ability to make more common enemies more common minis, since painting difficulty will be an increased driving factor. Do you really want the commons looking crappier or being less useful minis, or ones you only need one of?
3. Eliminate the goal of having complete sets per case. This will allow them to increase the number of commons per case and reduce the rares. In order for this to have any real effect on prices though, it must combined with step 2. Otherwise you are just making it harder for people to get what they want by forcing them to buy even more minis. Given how popular getting complete sets is, I doubt it will go away.
4. Reduce the overall quality of the line to reduce costs. I don't think anyone would really say they want to see this.
6. Please bring the price of the next set back down to earth.

Pre-painted plastic minis are expensive to produce. There is no cheap way around it. It would be nice if we could buy a 60 case set for $300, but both WizKids and Paizo would not financially be able to do so.
It's also been said more than once that the price per mini for RotRL is actually cheaper than per mini for H&M, even though the sticker shock is higher for RotRL. It's just because there are 'more' of them.
The only other option to bring the price down is to make less quality minis, and I don't think any of us want that, I certainly don't.
Also, these minis are much cheaper than DDM. Where those cases usually only ran in the $200-250 range, the distribution was awful. You could buy easily 3 cases of those and still be nowhere close to a full set. With the Pathfinder Battles minis, almost everyone has gotten a full set in one case. And if you don't get it in one case, you definitely do so in two.
7. More common figures we can use as DMs. Like animals, dogs, Common creatures.
Now this I can stand behind.
Would love to see more common creatures, as well. Farmers (and wives),children, blacksmith, innkeeper, serving girls, dogs, horses (animals in general), more nobles, etc.
Our group does a lot of roleplaying, and we definitely would be using all of the above.
Our second shipment from WizKids, which has the cases we will be opening for singles, hasn't shown up yet. It was supposed to be here around GenCon timeframe, so it is late. We are trying to figure out where the heck it is. Once it arrives, we will open up the cases ASAP and get them up and blogged. Sorry for the delay!

To number 7, this set includes 4 different goblin sculpts, combine with last sets 4 (2 sculpts with 2 paints.) Plus a myriad of animals and insects. So while the number in a case isn't necessarily huge, one is accumulating a fair amount of DMable minis over the various sets.
As much fun as it might be I don't think we need a set dedicated to We Be Goblins, replete with goblins, horses, dogs and spiders.

Dunno about that. We've had a lot of comments with people wanting hordes of goblins or other humanoids. I'd bet that you could sell packs of 20 goblins or orks or whatever with relative ease. I'd find myself needing more hordes of certain creatures than others, and while the paper minis are nice, the pre-painted are certainly more preferable (at least to me.)

I don’t think he was speaking common in the sense of monsters you see all the time (i.e. goblins), but common “folk”. Peasants, nobles, animals, etc.
But as for the animals, what animals are you referring to? Yes, we did get the wolf in H&M, and the Goblin Dog and a Yeth Hound for this set. However, those are more monsters. We (or at least I am) are referring to common animals you would see around a farm or home.
And I’m certainly not saying they should have a set dedicated to something like any of these. That would be a very bad idea, actually. Maybe 1 or 2 in a set, that’s all. We received a couple of (named) nobles this set, which is good. But I was just voicing my preference I would like to see some normal townfolk in future sets.
