I'm a GM who doesn't enjoy killing players, However, due to a series of bad rolls, The Wight early on in Ironfang Invasion killed one of the players, in my haste I said they could keep going as a Wight, but I feel I should give them an opportunity to either roll a new character, or take some sort of supernatural deal to have the curse of being undead removed.

Would a Fey offering them a bargain to be brought back to life be too out there? and if so what should that bargain be? any Ideas are welcome!

Sovereign Court

Mark of the Devoted is something that does exist. Its not exactly a Wight, but the Juju Zombie is a template that will make adding it to a character much easier then reverse engineering a Wight. And Juju gets to keep class levels/presumably their own will.

Basically, the deal is they come back as normal (still human/whatever) but they have that feat now. When/if they die again, they go all zombie mode.

Alternatively, just raise dead. You just have to kill the undead form first.

Don't feel bad about killing players from a series of bad rolls. Figuring out how to resurrect their buddy can make for a pretty epic story, even at the early levels :)

Yep, it makes a good sidequest, but I'd limit it to a single session (or less), so the player doesn't have to watch for long. The GameMastery Guide suggests that such a player takes over a pet, which probably works well for a session. Could be modified to taking over some summons or even some enemies, though this would be slightly more complicated.

Or you give the PC's spirit some limited influence. Let them enforce a reroll once a round or whisper an advice into another PC's ear. Works especially well if the PC is of an occult class or has some other connection to life or death (necromancer, divine caster etc.).

^---- Yeah I agree. If a PC dies in sesh, make sure that they have a path to resurrect him that gets resolved by the middle-ish of the following sesh; and during that time, they can take over rolling for pets and summons, and I like the whispering in their ears from beyond thing and acting as a positive influence for provoking rerolls too, I might steal that tbh. Anywho, having a PC show up to a 3+ hour sesh and not even play is shapoopy, so plan on them being able to do something until they're resurrected.

If its getting to the middle/late part of your sesh and your PC's are struggling or wandering off course from your plan to resurrect Jimmy McBadRolls, then that's an acceptable time to railroad that with a wandering lvl 13 Cleric who was "sent by his deity" to find the group of PC's. And the PC's can either pay him for the resurrection, or they become beholden either to the Cleric or that Cleric's deity for a favor in the future. Maybe the Cleric resurrects Jimmy at no charge, and implores the PC's to help him to stop an imminent threat in McSleepyTownVille, such as a Mind Flayer or a Necromancer who has preying upon the townsfolk for a couple weeks and now his ranks of undead/thralls are almost unmanageable.
