I'm fairly new to RPG and have never GM'd but this might be a decent opportunity to learn, if you're willing to take a chance on rookie and
I'm big on background and maps and would base things for you on details from the Inner Sea World Guide. I'm not too bothered about having a solo game myself. I'd be happy to just run a solo game for you. That said, there are loads of things in Pathfinder I'd like to get experience playing: particularly, exotic races and classes. Also, it might be interesting to play a kind of 'learn to GM' game where my character plays a 'magician's apprentice' to the GM's NPC master mage and they conjure and bind spectral NPCs to learn the rules and strategies of play.
I've updated Zwergus Stahlin (see details after character stats). Is this the sort of thing you're looking for?

How about if I choose one of the Millon Personality Styles and try work that in to a real person/dwarf? Perhaps, I could create someone with a personality totally at odds with their past or future: like one of those people we meet and wonder how someone with such a great/terrible past could become such a terrible/great person? Focusing on psychology, I could also work a dash of psychosis or autism into it (if that would be interesting and not too unrealistic)?

Not really. I'm expecting character, beliefs, skills and other things to evolve with (and as a result of) game play. I imagine the players at this stage are closer to primates than humans (or humanoids) in terms of cultural heritage. Unlike primates - like humans - they have the advantage of an unrivalled encephalization quotient. I don't know what sort of environment and dangers they are facing. If things work in the game world as they have done in this world, they will not begin to develop culturally until they have mastered their environment and begun to perceive themselves as something apart from it. With humans, the real cultural quantum leaps didn't begin until they developed agriculture (after which follows more complex social and commercial relationships). I'm reminded of a great book "War in Human Civilization" by Azar Gat. It traces the development of violent conflict from pre-history to the present and links it to stages in social, political, scientific and cultural development. I don't know if this would be something that can be expressed in a game setting, but, the real power behind cultural advancement (in my opinion) is linguistic development. Language becomes a repository for knowledge. Words denoting objects, through experience (sometimes fatal) pair with attributes (like 'fatal') and each new generation which learns the language starts life inheriting decades (or centuries) of experience. It will be interesting to see if we can develop art and some system of glyphs for storing language (sacred cave carvings and such). I'm not that concerned about working out details at this stage - just in getting started and seeing what the GM has planned for us and how we can work with that.
Submitting Zwergus Stahlin No backstory. I wasn't sure what you wanted. I can add one if needed.
My Elf Paladin Tsaurat Lvefir I don't have the AP material to check for a Campaign trait but I'm happy to play without that.
I'm fine with jungle. I think it would give play more options if we didn't settle on one particular valley or hill. Also, if they have access to a coast (rather than being landlocked) they have the opportunity to learn about spring tides and the connection with the lunar cycle. In terms of latitude, I prefer tropical over equatorial so the sun's (or suns' ... ) path changes with the seasons.
Corsario wrote: I have always think a "pacifist" character is very interesting to make, and game with... That's something I've seriously considered. It might be possible in Pathfinder. The alignment and company rules for Paladins really support this. If you're okay with smiting lots of evil, it pretty much fits the bill. 'Shadowrun' pacifists might survive but the nature of most runs would be morally compromising. 'The One Ring' is a game I've got - never played - which seems to have moral probity built in.
Very interesting notion! I have a few questions:
Might have more later. :)

Yes, thanks Revvy. It was a great introduction to RPG and Pathfinder and I really enjoyed it. I can't believe it's been going on near three weeks! Seems a lot less. Thanks everyone else. I think I was a bit too literal/pedantic at the start but your example helped me get into the swing of things. I hope you enjoyed my RP and I didn't hold things up too much. Again, Revvy, thank you. I appreciate the way you guided us along and your explanations of rules and the game. Please get in touch if you ever want Tomas for another game.

Okay. It's a bit confusing. I'd have written that rule differently. I suppose it makes sense if you're starting a character on 2nd level. Though, having a choice of two favoured classes at time of creation is something of a benefit. Sadly, not the skill-points bonanza I was hoping it would be. Thank you, again.

Revvy, Since you're here, can I ask you a general Pathfinder question - not related to this Campaign? Yes? Good! I'm making a new character: a half-elf. Core rules say half-elves get two favoured classes at level 1. Does this mean I can multi-class? If yes, when it comes to counting skills, do I get both the '2+Int' and the '6+Int' of both classes, i.e '8+(2*Int)' skills at level 1? Also, do I sum: 1) hit points, 2) base attack bonus, 2) saving throws, 4) spells-per-day? I can't see anything in the core-rules which answers these questions. Maybe there are guidelines in some other guide (Advanced Players Guide) which I will need to buy to be 'Pathfinder Legal' with my character? Many thanks.

Psyblade wrote: "for the record, it wasn't an attack on you as a player or in need of you defending yourself :)" Yeah, it's cool. I know. It's been a bit of a mindf*: learning to separate character from player (for myself and for understanding others). I understand Caswallon can say something which Psyblade might completely disagree with, which Tomas doesn't care about (because he can't read Caswallon's mind) but mderm feels the need to respond to (because he can read her mind). Though, he can't respond to Caswallon so ... um ... Yeah: mindf*! I just wanted to put forward my reasoning, based on my understanding of the rules. Which ... was useful, cause I learned something not completely clear in the book. Cheers, all :)

Revvy, I see. Thanks. I see why the distinction 's important - for situations where you only have a standard action. If I was in a threatened square - in our situation - I would just draw the scimitar. I'd be prepared to lose the battle-axe. I'll make sure I check table 8-2(Core Rulebook) before I declare any actions.

Caswallon wrote: "When Thomas dropped his axe it caused her to raise a brow, not a smart move on behalve of the fighter, especially considering there was a trigger happy gun slinger and alchemist (who without a doubt was currently juggeling with bombs) would need someone to protect them." I understand: preparing to throw a splash weapon is a full-round action; sheathing a weapon is a move action; dropping something is free. The plan is to throw the AF, draw my crossbow if there's time for another ranged attack. If they come up on us quickly I can still pick up the axe as a move action and attack as my standard action. If we have to flee - I still have my Scimitar.

On the map of Naldak's point, the big moveable blue shapes ... they're paper, obscuring the map, right? We're not meant to see all details immediately? And we are ... I assume breaching the ice-wall in front of the natural stone passage, a third down on the right of the map?

Yes, Misforstatt I'm starting to learn that. Probably a lot of what I've put in dialogue should have been done as a skill-check. As it stands, Tomas has bugger-all skills, money, feats. I'm maybe over-leveraging him. But, hey ... it's my first campaign and I'm having fun! :) Cheers.

Heh! :) Funny how the way you read something in your head can affect the interpretation of an ambiguous sentence. Baroness Nadya wrote: "I am sure he can sell you an Ice diamond...for the right price" I think the voice I read it with inflected 'for the right price' meaning, 'for a price which is the right one, so, it's a good deal'. Not, 'for the right price meaning, 'for a price, but that'll be whatever's right for Alexie'. GM, I don't suppose NPCs could add a "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" if they're giving us a clue, could they? ;)
I am totally new to RPG. Just started my first Pathfinder Society campaign a few days ago. I can't say I've experienced exactly what your friend is experiencing. The situation I'm in is more or less okay. At times, it feels like it might go that way. My opinion to your friend, for what it's worth, would be: "Pick carefully who you game with. Build a 'portfolio' of players according to their ability, knowledge, literary skill, attention to detail and sense of the dramatic". Obviously, that won't help in this game. Being new, I don't really know how easy that would be but it's what I'd want to do. It seems people get different things out of RPG: 'vicarious slaughter', 'unrestrained emotional self-expression', 'moral edification', 'artistic creativity' - and more I've yet to see. I think my gaming experience would be improved by finding players in it for the same things as me, who know how to interact with my literary style, and who share my ideas on teamwork. If they're reading this now they should know this isn't a criticism of them: just an expression of preference. I doubt anyone starts out playing with ideally compatible team-mates. I'm sure I'm not the right team-member for many people here. That's fine.

Ah, ok: so not all checks have a stated DC. A check is presented, I decide what I want to do, write it up, roll? Then, GM tells me whether I succeed or fail? A concealed DC? As opposed to knowing the DC, rolling then deciding how to narrate the results. Revvy Bitterleaf wrote: "For (most skills - there are some exceptions, like you need to be trained in the use of them, etc) " Yeah, got that: I've not rolled for any checks in 'trained only' skills I don't have levels in. Revvy Bitterleaf wrote: " If you feel like you roll for a check yourself and don't want to assist, you can still do that" With +0 Charisma-Mod for Diplomacy, I'd assist the character with the best chance. If I'd known about assists for the 'Sense Motive' check in the first encounter of the campaign, I'd have assisted Onyx with his +9. Or if anyone with 'Dark Vision' wanted to peer in to the trees to see if there were other Ulfen, I'd have tried to assist with that (if I'd know I could).

Such as if you roll diplomacy to trade ,as opposed to rolling diplomacy to assist someone on it - like Caswallon did) Do I have to? I mean, it's to my advantage if I know if I pass or fail before I decide what to do. I was applying the following approach to tests: 'fit circumstances in to narrative; make roll; follow up with another post if it succeeds (otherwise let the others get on with it)'. Sorry if my position on 'trading' is ambiguous or unclear. Whether the purpose is trade or 'purposed trade', it still involves actual attempts at trade. If I'd succeeded, I would have presented the letter and begun talks (or talks about talks). I didn't know about assists. If I did, I'd have given my result to the character most likely to succeed.

Misforstatt, I might have choosen a better word than 'incidental', but ... seriously: relax, it's just a game. Quibbling over one word, 'incidental', and getting upset because you think I mean it to de-value ... whatever, is daft. You argument has validity but it also has some flaws. As things stand, I can't be bothered pointing them out. It's too much effort for a bit of fun and entertainment. But that's just my opinion. It was given freely; so take it for what it's worth.

I think trade is incidental; mostly a cover story. I think the Venture-Captain's brief said we need permission to go past Dalun to Nardak's point. Dalun is a 'stop' not the 'destination'.

Psyblade wrote: "Just a heads up, I am not allowed to go kill player chars and nor will I ever do such a thing" :) Okay, that is very good to know and will make calculating decisions a lot easier. Caswallon make Tomas a bit edgy. She seems very keen to get in to a shoot-out as soon as the odds work for her. If the mission is just a 'fetch-and-return' that also makes things easier. It just occurs to me that 'opposing war' as Misforstatt will do, might be as advantageous. The party could make camp and wait to see who wins. Or, it could follow the raiders at a distance and watch as it happens: far enough not to cop any flac, close enough to call for help if it runs in to trouble. Or, even, come to the aid of the side "with God on their side" as the propaganda goes. |
