About i'Drith D'Har

Background

i'Drith (which means disappointment in the deceptively elegant language of the Drow) was an utter failure as a Demonic Cleric. Mocked by her sisters, and disdained by her house Matriarch, i'Drith seemed destined to be sacrificed on an alter.

To make matters worse, some strange heritage had given i'Drith an earthen stony skin, instead of the smooth ebony skin that blessed her sisters.

As an exercise in humiliation, i'Drith was sent on scouting missions and war parties with her brothers, to try to learn the arts of war. She was nimble but had little strength (or inclination) for massacres. It turned out, one of her brothers, Indrall, felt the same. They would volunteer for scouting missions to get quiet time to talk, as often as possible. Those were blessed moments of peace for i'Drith. She and her brother would talk honestly for hours about their yearning for a different life, a life without the constant deceitful machinations of drow ambition.

One day during the endless sacrifices of slaves to their Demon overlords, i'Drith overheard her elder sisters talking about plans to turn Indrall into a drider, and sacrifice her at the next Blood Harvest ceremony. Her sister gave i'Drith a cruel smile, indicating she had allowed herself to be overheard deliberately,knowing that the younger siblings were helpless to change their fate.

On the next scouting mission, i'Drith and Indrall ran away, planning never to go back, but they felt a great tremor in the earth and heard screaming. Realizing their family had been attacked by a clan of svirfneblin, and their summoned earth elementals, the siblings ran back to try to help those that plotted their execution. They were family after all.

In their efforts to help, both siblings were caught in an avalanche. With a wan smile, they said their good-byes. i'Drith, at least, felt better dying trying to rescue someone, than as a sacrifice to some vile outsider.

No one was more surprised to wake up again then i'Drith, who found herself in a spectacular gem-filled chamber. And beaming down at her was the most radiantly beautiful elven woman she had ever seen. i'Drith had paid little attention in her Religion classes, as they had mostly centered on the power and prestige of the demons. But even she realized this must be a Goddess.

It was in fact Yuelral, the Goodly Elven Goddess of Earth and Magic. She gave i'Drith a warm smile, and spoke in calm, certain tones. "I have waited a long time for one such as you to be born to the Elves under the Earth. It is time for those who are special amongst you to begin reunification with your cousins above. In the centuries to come, the whole of this world will need to stand united against even greater dangers, out amongst the stars." Her distant gaze wandered back to the shell-shocked elf.

"So we will start small. We will begin with you."

"And wh-what of my brother?" i'Drith stammered.

"Ahh, do not worry child, he is alive. He is safe. But he has different gifts and different... parties will undertake his tutoring. But it is so rare for one of your heritage to be born into my domain. I have a personal interest in you. Rest now. When you wake, it will be under the auspices of your wise mentor."

"EEEEEEeeeeeeehhhhk!" i'Drith awoke to shrieking, and crashing and scampering about. When her vision cleared she saw a wizened sverneblin screaming incantations at her. She recognized them vaguely as excorcism incantations used to get rid of unwanted demons. Apparently, he had "summoned" her by accident, and couldn't get rid of her again. Thus, began the years-long tutelage and friendship with her mentor in earthern sorcery, the wise but absent-minded Thervin Divvle.

Finally, Yuelral came to her in a dream. Her training was at an end, and it was time for the real adventures to begin. With sadness, but also a burgeoning trill of excitement, i'Drith bade her mentor good-bye and made her way to the surface...
