Background:

Ping's father, Malver Ibbleting, was kicked out of the Ibbleting clan shortly after Ping was born. As a last act of spite, he kidnapped the infant Ping and raised her as his apprentice in the town of Schollenwald. As she grew up, Ping learned three lessons: Malver was always right, Malver was the only one she could trust, and everyone else would always try to use her for their own ends.

In truth, the hateful gnome wanted to control his daughter and apprentice for as long as he could, keeping her isolated and feeding her a steady stream of lies that blurred the harsh lines of reality into a fantasy that allowed him to mold and shape his daughter as he saw fit. Over the years, Ping found it harder and harder to trust her own memories and senses as Malver gaslit her. Her sense of reality began to crumble as her father became the only thing she could trust, because trusting anything else would only see her punished.

Malver, though, was not as clever as he thought. While he was a skilled illusionist and could have likely lived fairly well selling his services to the merchants and nobility, he was an inveterate gambler and con artist. He worked scheme after scheme trying to strike it rich until he angered the wrong person, Gulven Malidont, a half-orc brute that was far more cunning and just as ruthless as he looked. Gulven ruled the seedy underbelly of Schollenwald, and not only had Malver racked up a substantial debt to Gulven, he had also tried to con the crime boss in a bid to skip town and avoid the inevitable kneebreakers that would come when he could no longer make the payments on what he owed.

Gulven ran Malver through after beating him senseless when he caught the gnome and sent his men after Ping to have her pay off the debt her father had left behind. Ping, scared and alone for the first time in her life, remembered her father's third lesson and ran for her life. She adopted the persona of Zeebo Softfeather, an old, rotund halfling hedge-mage that offered minor magical services to the caravans he joined up with.

Zeebo met Gormrenn Geldzauberer, and earned the man's trust when he pointed out that an item he was looking at was a fake, though Ping only knew that because it was a fake her father had crafted. Gormrenn asked Zeebo to do a few odd jobs for him, mainly helping his factors verify the authenticity of minor artifacts he had purchased, over the next year before asking the old halfling if he'd be willing to take on a new job for him, and to meet him at his gilded Alcázar.


Persona:

Ping possesses many of the traits one normally associates with gnomes, insatiable curiosity, a hint of fey mischief, and what one might call an obsession with making things. However, after her father's death, Ping has grown increasingly paranoid as she keeps an eye out for Gulven's men. She only trusts people as far as she needs to, and never reveals her true name or self lest the people after her find her trail.

Zeebo is a jolly and curious sort. He is always interested in the tales of others and many nights he's spent long hours teasing tales from his companions by the campfire. Despite this friendliness, he keeps to himself, and guards his secrets jealously. He sleeps in a small tent by himself and never lets anyone help him put it up or take it down.


Appearance:

Ping is a small young gnome woman with fiery-red hair; large, lipid eyes; delicate features; and pale skin that is untouched by the tattoos that are so common on other gnomes. Partly this is because her father never let her out of the house, but ever since Malver's death, Ping has kept her identity as much of a secret as possible, and revealing that Zeebo is just a disguise would make that almost impossible. Besides, after the incident with the striges, she really can't stand the thought of anything needle-like near her skin.

Zeebo is a rotund halfling that wears dark, hooded robes. His bushy, gray beard spills out over his belly hiding much of his face, along his eyebrows and hair. Only his large, bulbous nose can be seen sticking out from the sea of wiry hair. He speaks in a high, creaky voice and often coughs when speaking for long periods of time.
