About Zarina "Fae" TeskaronaBackground: Appearance
When traveling, or not wanting to draw attention to herself, Fae wears common traveling clothes consisting of a loose fitting pale green blouse and brown leather trousers with dark leather boots that come up to midcalf. Her traveling clothes are in colors of beiges and browns so as to not show dirt easily and to not stand out in a crowd. She usually wears her hair pulled back into a loose ponytail when in this outfit. When she does want to draw attention to herself (usually for social events, when working at her family’s inn, or to catch a certain someone's eye), Fae dresses up in the colorful skirts and scarves of her people. Her outfits consist a tight fitting bodice with long flowing sleeves and a full, ankle length skirt with slits up either side for freedom of movement. It is in graduated shade of purple, starting with lavender at the top of her bodice and becoming a deep dark violet at the hem of her skirt. She has several scarves all in different shades of purple and her outfit and scarves are all embroidered with dark yellow thread. She usually let her hair hang loose when dancing (usually for fun when alone as she doesn’t consider herself talented at all in that skill) so that it flows with her movements. Fae is friendly and cheerful, if sometimes a bit coy, and is typically well liked by those that meet her. She got her nickname mostly because of her impish personality as a child – always getting into things and playing pranks on others. Little did they know just how apt her knickname was, given the traces of fey in her blood that had long lain dormant… As more and more of the Varisians began to settle in the city of Magnimar, opportunities for business increased and attracted Fae’s family. Wanting to try his hand at a more ‘stationary’ business, Fae’s father moved the family to the city in order to partner with a close friend in opening up an inn. In her early teens, Fae and her younger siblings served customers food and drink while her mother and elder sister danced and read fortunes for the patrons. Fae found that she enjoyed the new city life – there was always something new to see or someone different to interact with. It was on one of her many excursions through the city that the strangeness began. She was just turning away from a merchant’s stall when the figurine caught her eye. It was jade and fashioned like what she thought looked like a cat (but a little ‘off’) and was covered in strange markings. It was grinning widely… mischievously. It was that grin that first caught her eye. She had also seen markings similar to those of the cat’s elsewhere in the city, and it was those runes that further drew her towards it. A slender, curious hand reached out to touch the figurine, and the cat’s eye gleamed, flashing so quickly, she almost missed it. She felt a shock, and then her hand went numb. The numbness was spreading up her arm. Suddenly scared, she turned away and ran back to her father’s inn. Nothing happened for a few weeks, but then Fae began getting the headaches. She began to see things… lights that would suddenly appear and dance behind her eyelids… strange sounds that no one else heard. She tried to ignore it, but the strange occurrences came more and more often. She decided to tell the others, but at first they thought it another of her pranks and thought little of it. But then one busy night at the inn, Fae felt the numbness again returning in her arm. She ignored it and set a mug of ale before a patron. Suddenly, her sight went blank and she fell. Looking up, she realized that she hadn’t gone blind, rather in front of her face, filling her vision were the lights. They were brighter than before, almost blinding. The common room had gone still. They all saw it. This time the lights had manifested in more than just her mind. She blinked and they winked out. Her mother let out a breath then pulled her daughter to her feet and took her upstairs. One of the patrons followed them – an older matron who had come to hear one of the bards who sometimes played in a corner in exchange for a meal and some coin. It seemed to be fate that brought the matron to the inn on the very night that Fae ‘blossomed’, for the woman was herself a fairly accomplished practice of the arcane arts. She and Fae’s parents talked in hushed tones in the room next door as the girl drifted on her bed into unconsciousness. A (somewhat reluctant) agreement was made and Fae would awake to find herself an apprentice of the elderly wizardess. Over the years that followed Karyn taught Fae some of what she knew from her home in the Shadow District of Magnimar. First and perhaps most important of her lessons was how to control the magic coursing within Fae and thereby to keep the debilitating headaches from returning. She also taught her increasingly curious and exuberant student the rudiments of arcane theory and practice as well as bits and pieces of the lore of the city – a subject which Fae found endlessly fascinating. Now a competent, if rather untested sorceress, Fae continues her studies, indulges her fascination with the runes and various ancient artifacts hidden within the city as she explores, and on occasion on busy nights, helps with the family inn.
