Combat 10: 1d8 + 3 + 1d8 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 3 + (7) + (4) = 17 So far, so good. And now the tough Combat check. I’ll recharge my whip to get sneak attack. Combat 15: 1d8 + 3 + 1d8 + 1d6 + 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (2) + (4) + (4) + 2 = 19 Defeated. But there are too many cards left to close the location. And now I get the free damage. Free damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 I recharge my Stalking Armor to reduce damage to 0. Discard Silver Balladeer to explore again. Explore 2: Encounter Unseen Sentinel. This dude is bad news. I can’t make the Perception check and using my Gem of Physical Prowess is too risky—if I fail, I’ll have to discard my weapon. So I’ll just discard the Gem for the Force damage. (More free damage, how fun.) And I’ll reload my rapier and look for some help against the Combat 14. Varian has Vencarlo and Koren has Mountain Man, both of which could be used after the check if I fail.
