Appearance
Picture!
Hideaki's feathers are glossy and well-cared for, black in color with just a hint of blue when the light hits them right. When he does not expect battle or hard work he often wears a fine kimono, but when traveling he more often wears hard-wearing Western-style clothing.
He always, no matter the circumstances, wears his daishō, his paired samurai blades, for though he is now a ronin, he is still a samurai. They are now his only inheritance, the only things he has left from his family.
His katana is Kujirosou, the Swooping Heron. The hilt and blade have subtly-worked decorations that make the blade look like a heron's long beak. More impressively, it is so finely made and balanced as to seem almost weightless in the hand. (Mechanically this is from the effortless lace, but I'm fluffing it as being due to the blade's exceptional craftsmanship.)
His wakazashi is Moretsunebi, the Striking Serpent. Unlike its paired blade it is rather plain, save for a subtle pattern in the stitching on the cover of the hilt that makes it look somewhat like snake-skin.
Background
It is said that the Yamauchi are born with a sword in their hand, and while this is not quite true, it is true that, as the eldest, Hideaki was trained in the way of the blade from a young age. His family, the Yamauchi, are steeped in the ways of the Samurai, having produced great swordsman for many generations, and it was expected that Hideaki would follow in their footsteps. The young tengu excelled in swordsmanship, but it was not his only talent. He also took to the art of calligraphy, and even began to write his own poems.
And yet, his father was never content, always accusing his son of slacking off, of dishonoring the family name. Always Hideaki took his words to heart, ever he drove himself harder, but it was never good enough.
Finally, as Hideaki neared the age he would be acknowledged as a man rather than a fledgling, he began to understand why his father was so harsh. It was fear. Fear because the world was changing. Fear because the world no longer needed them. The spread of firearms was changing the battlefield, and it seemed there would soon come a day where samurai were no longer needed.
And so Hideaki began working on another way of fighting. If the traditional clash of warriors was giving way to the thunder of guns, the ways of the samurai must change to match them. Armor would do little to help, and so he dispensed with it, instead working on a swift style of combat with erratic movements to throw off the aim of enemy guns.
His father was livid. How could he abandon the ways of the ancients? Hideaki's arguments about needing to change with the times did not move his father. Finally he threatened to disown his son if he continued down this path, and Hideaki, full of the pride of youth, stormed off, leaving his ancestral home where it was carved into the mountain and going off in search of someone he could train with to perfect his style.
He found what he was searching for in a monastery of sorts, where people came to seek perfection of both body and spirit. Martial arts were part of this pursuit, and here Hideaki saw warriors who could run as swift as the horse and evade blows so swiftly they seemed a blur. He begged to join them, and after a lengthy period of proving his determination, was allowed within.
Hideaki had joined in pursuit of martial perfection, but he soon found that the spiritual pursuits of the monks spoke to him, as well. Slowly he grew from a fiery, impatient youth to a disciplined, calm man. Meditation became as important to him as swordplay, and poetry flowed with the deft movements of his blade.
At length he thought it time to leave, to return and make his apologies to his father. But when he returned home, his father would not let him so much as speak, instead shouting that he was no longer his son, that he had no place here, that he could never show his beak in Yamauchi lands again.
And so Hideaki left Feicui Dao, taking an airship to distant lands. He found work as a mercenary, guarding this caravan or that airship. He cared little where they were going, only that their cause was not dishonorable and that the pay was sufficient for him to live. This latest job guarding a Talium shipment is simply the latest in a long line of meanderings for him... for to Hideaki, it is not the outer but the inner journey that matters.
Personality
Hideaki is a quiet man, preferring to watch and listen before he speaks. He believes strongly in maintaining his personal honor, and keeps his word as if it were law. He also believes in the necessity of perfecting mind, body, and spirit together, so he considers his calligraphy, poetry, and philosophy as important as his swordplay.
