------------------------------ BRAWLER ABILITIES ------------------------------ Brawler’s Cunning (Ex): If the brawler’s Intelligence score is less than 13, it counts as 13 for the purpose of meeting the prerequisites of combat feats. Martial Flexibility (Ex): A brawler can take a move action to gain the benefit of a combat feat they don’t possess. This effect lasts for 1 minute. The brawler must meet all the feat’s prerequisites. They may use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + 1/2 her brawler level (minimum 1). The brawler can use this ability again before the duration expires in order to replace the previous combat feat with another choice. If a combat feat has a daily use limitation (such as Stunning Fist), any uses of that combat feat while using this ability count toward that feat’s daily limit Martial Training (Ex): At 1st level, a brawler counts their total brawler levels as both fighter levels and monk levels for the purpose of qualifying for feats. They also count as both a fighter and a monk for feats and magic items that have different effects based on whether the character has levels in those classes (such as Stunning Fist and a monk’s robe). This ability does not automatically grant feats normally granted to fighters and monks based on class level, namely Stunning Fist. Unarmed Strike: At 1st level, a brawler gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. A brawler may attack with fists, elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a brawler may make unarmed strikes with their hands full. A brawler applies their full Strength modifier (not half) on damage rolls for all their unarmed strikes. Usually, a brawler’s unarmed strikes deal lethal damage, but they can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on their attack roll. They have the same choice to deal lethal or nonlethal damage while grappling. A brawler’s unarmed strike is treated as both a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that modify either manufactured weapons or natural weapons.

Background:
Introduction Weathering strode across the deck of the barge, pacing a bit as he awaited his arrival in Lotheedar. Brushing some imaginary dirt off of his jacket and straightening his lapel, his thoughts turned to the letter in his breast pocket. -------------------------------------------------------- To my son, Marius: I hope this letter finds you well. In the event that it does not, I hope circumstances begin to favor you again soon. Your name, along with those of your companions, has been circulating in certain circles, and while details have been scarce it brings me no little amount of pleasure to see that your actions have been impactful enough to garner recognition, though I cannot say yet if that recognition should lead towards good or ill will. I suppose time will tell, as it does with all things.
Please know that your mother and I love you, and we are so very proud of you. We hope to see you soon, and your mother hopes that you will be accompanied by a young lady when next we meet. Your father, Lord Konstantin Erallan -------------------------------------------------------- Weathering was aware of the contents of the note. He had been tasked with memorizing the more important details should anything unexpected occur, and could recite portions of this letter word for word if needed. Confident in the note's security, Weathering let his mind drift to other matters. Not given to much philosophy, he considered his place in the world, and was by and large contented by it. House Erallan had been kind to him when he was in a difficult position, and he sought eagerly to return the favor as best he could. Weathering had been born in Cassomir and raised under the tutelage of the majordomo of House Cantrell, a family of minor nobility that had achieved title through being in the right place in the right time during the defense of Greyguard Castle. In addition to his studies, Weathering had spent much of his youth serving as friend, playmate, and bodyguard of Darian Cantrell, only son and heir of House Cantrell, who was two years his junior. The pair were as close as brothers until a political rival of House Cantrell made it known and produced evidence in Cassomir that Weathering was the product of an affair between Lord Cantrell and a scullery maid. To avoid further embarrassment, Weathering was immediately volunteered for service in the Taldan Navy and shipped out under cover of night. His training as a steward caught the attention of his ship's Bosun, and he was immediately assigned as an assistant. In addition to furthering his education through his new responsibilities, Weathering took an interest in the dockyard brawls, or "friendlies," that would occur when on shore leave (out of sight of officers, of course) and quickly became a recognized contender, supplementing his wages with the winnings from these fights. Weathering came to know Midshipman Erallan after the latter approached the former hoping to gain an invite to one of these fights. It soon became a regular activity for Weathering to escort the young officer to these events, and the two became fast friends. One evening, having received complaints of noise and rough activity, the local constables, in conjunction with the Imperial Navy, led a sting operation on these dockyard brawls. Realizing what was happening, Weathering grabbed Midshipman Erallan and shoved him into the water just before he himself was apprehended. After this incident, Weathering didn't see much of a future available for himself in the Imperial Navy, and made preparations to end his service. Just before he left, Weathering was met by Midshipman Erallan, who offered his thanks towards Weathering's sacrifice. In return, Weathering was given a letter of introduction to House Erallan with the promise of good employment, if he was interested. Grateful, and realizing he had little in the way of prospects outside of being a dockworker, Weathering made his way to Ridonport and began his service in House Erallan. The combination of schooling and military discipline allowed Weathering to gravitate quickly towards the role of majordomo in House Erallan, where he served as steward, escort/bodyguard and assistant to various members of the house. From time to time he assisted Marius in his errands, which occasionally involved transporting information to and from one Lady Martella Lotheed. His interactions with Lady Lotheed were limited in his role as majordomo, though she, like Marius, always made time to stop and and visit. At one point, Lady Lotheed questioned Weathering about his surname and if he was happy with the current state of life in Taldor. For a brief moment, Weathering considered the area of his birth and the brief bitterness that he would never be seen as more than a blemish on his family's name touched his face. Lady Lotheed had smiled knowingly and extend an invitation to make arrangements for Weathering to join Marius in Oppara. Aware of the impact the work young Erallan was pursuing could have on his family, Weathering carefully declined the offer under the pretense of maintaining his duties to the whole of House Erallan. That offer had been some time ago. Recently, a heavy letter addressed to Weathering had arrived bearing the familiar seal of Lady Lotheed. Within was a note bearing an address and the message: You are yet needed. As he considered the note, Weathering pulled a signet ring bearing the mark of House Cantrell out. Considering that destiny had reached out again, Weathering went to speak to Lord Erallan. Some news had reached them regarding Marius, and they proved to be more than willing to send Weathering to check in and assist him however possible. The barge shuddered as it hit the docks in Lotheedar, jolting Weathering from his reminiscing. Gathering his things, he squared his shoulders. There was work to do ahead.
Appearance and Personality:
Weathering is tall and lithe, with a measuring look that comes from half-lidded eyes. His hair is kept long to cover his ears, and he has begun noticing gray and white hairs appearing on his head and in his beard. Weathering appears and speaks very properly, and is almost never without a pair of spotless white gloves. He speaks with a low voice, and does his best to avoid excitement, though a keen observer would notice that Weathering never stands completely at ease and walks easily on the balls of his feet. Weathering's Role:
Weathering is meant to be the Alfred to the team's Batman, the Willikins to their Sam Vimes. The idea for him to be the majordomo of House Erallan actually came from Marius and I really liked the concept, so I rolled with it and shared the background I wrote with Marius for their approval. Weathering is definitely not an optimized brawler and will probably be outshined in many of the skill checks by almost everyone else. I don't really care about either of those because I really like the idea of a smarmy, jack-of-all-trades butler that is as comfortable in a brawl as he is in a parlor. It sounds fun to me, and I think that he could play off of the other characters and NPCs really well (malicious compliance and whatnot). I am compelled to add that Weathering's own motivations for joining up with the group are more than just to protect Marius (as noted in the backstory), but that Weathering really is comfortable in his role as the majordomo of House Erallan. Would he like to be recognized as an equal by his birth family? Yes, and this group would have the connections and trigger events that would allow this, but Weathering is comfortable as is in his role as majordomo. I will also add that Marius and I have already discussed the potential of Marius ordering Weathering around, which I am comfortable with as they have promised not to abuse this. Thank you again for your consideration. |
