Male Human Alchemist 8/Arcanist 6

The party gives the Striders directions and then continues along through the city, skirting the southern edge of the Lake and progressing along Ash Avenue to see where folks are that need to be pushed higher into the city for evacuation.

Ahead you see a massive fire. Weer’s Elixir shop has caught fire!

Vortimax Weer is wringing his hands outside the building. It's obvious by the ichor, blood and soot all over him that he's been fighting and working the evacuation as well.

He spies you and comes running up, "Apprentice! You and your friends are a welcome sight. I am out of magic fighting those abominations. I came back to collect some supplies and found the building on fire. The volatile potions held within will most certainly explode if not tended to, causing a massive fire that could spread throughout the rest of the city! You need to get in there! Split up and we'll find as many as we can!"

Just at that moment a tremor shakes the earth causing pieces of the building to collapse and fires to flare up in places.

"Hurry!" The old man darts inside.

There are a total of 12 Volatile Potion crates throughout the building. To locate 1, it requires a DC 20 Perception check. For each 10 points the check exceeds 20, an additional crate is located. It requires two rounds to lift and remove a crate from the building. You have an unknown amount of time before the tremors and fire consume the building or a potion crate

Tactical map will not be necessary. Roll your perception checks and we will progress the rounds accordingly. If you have other spells that you think could aid, throw them out and I'll adjudicate their assistance.

Analyze Dweamor on the cage:

The device is a soulcage and it radiates strong abjuration, conjuration and necromancy magic. It is a minor artifact.

The cage is a powerful focus for a ritual to establish a permanant portal between the Materiel Plane and Carceri.

Vortimax sees what Nowzai is doing and pulls out a scroll and aids his apprentice and then shares the information with you all.

Legend Lore:

The spell indicates this particular soulcage was forged by a fire giant named Dugobras, infused with magic by a cleric named Khyron Bonesworn aided by a priestess named Triel Eldurast, a wizard named Skaven Umbermead, and a priest named Tarkilar. It also reveals the soulcage is related to the Soul Pillars of Karran-Kural and it uncovers a strange quote: An ancient hate stolen from the souls of the dead, the cage is but the key to a greater evil

Vortimax looks apoplectic at the sight of Ma'puande. Coughing and choking, he finally stammers out, "My ..my .. lady, it is impossible ...!"

A loud voice hollers down a bit later, "Out of my way fool, we were trouncing dragons in lairs deeper than this before you were out of swaddling clothes!"

A few moments later, the wizened Vortimax Weer appears with Skie Aldersun on his arm. The gnome shopkeeper appears to be keeping the old man from falling flat on his rear as he enters the basement of the Vault.

"I haven't looked into the Mayor's disappearance, so I can't speculate. Seems it's likely caught up in this. He wasn't the kind of man to depart the city."

He fusses around until he discovers a pipe and packs it with tobacco, lighting it before he continues, "Lord Vhalantru? He's a noble. Don't like most of them ... you being an exception, Nowzai, because of your keen mind. He's relatively new ... 10 or 15 years here, but other than that, can't say I think much about the man."

He continues to puff on his pipe, blowing a few well-formed smoke rings, "I feel the same about the churches ... not a religious man, myself, so I let the commoners complain about services and whose sword is bigger."

"I trust Skie from our time together as adventurers and I would trust Maavu, but he is tied up with other concerns in Redgorge. And, if I'm being honest, the Lord Mayor was weak and a terrible leader, but was a good soul at heart. He just couldn't move the entrenched nobility. Just having him on your side would be valuable if you can find him."

He removes his glasses and wipes them deliberately before continuing, "You also need to consider that when there is a vacuum of power, what will happen if you just let it fill on its own. You may need to push someone in the right direction or even take on something yourself. Look for those opportunities."

Weer's Elixir's

"True chaos might be a bit much even for me. Bah, maybe you're right and right-minded folks should do something about it. Anyway a doddering old geezer can aid you?"

Weer's Elxiris

"Bah, this place has always been a kettle ready to boil over. Add a few taxes, this ridiculous siege in Redgorge because of that fool paladin's challenge, and a missing mayer and chaos took over quickly. We went from comfortable frontier town to refugee camp in a couple weeks!"

He fusses around the shop a bit, moving papers and vials around to make space, but then just filling up other space. He eventually puts some books on the ground and brings out three chairs for you all.

"The real question is, what are you going to do about it? You seem to have risen above the politics of the city and the inefficacy of the churches and have solved some major problems in the past. Are you still in it for the good of Cauldron, or are you moving on and letting this place shrivel up into its own corruption?"

He says this last without judgement or animosity as if either option would be fine by him.
