Voem grew up in the village of Klontar, nestled in the mountains far in the northwest of Kreonata raised by his mother and his mother's cat - Voem never met his father and his mother had only told him that he was a travelling merchant that never came back from moving a caravan one day. Growing up in a society of hunters, Voem enjoyed the feeling of wielding a weapon but felt somewhat guilty for slaying beasts that could not fight back. With his mother being one of the most adept hunters in the village, Voem was not obligated to find food for her or the cat, and for that reason he decided to dedicate his life to protecting the small hunting village.
With the cat as his only true companion, Voem would spend his days in the woods, training himself to become a warrior that his village could be proud of. Never truly being able to afford to buy equipment or a weapon, he fashioned himself armor out of bark, wood, and rocks that mimicked the constriction of a normal armor.
Spending the majority of his time in the woods with the cat, talking to it and behaving as if the crescent eyes of the feline were perpetually criticizing the young man, Voem taught trained his body and his mind by trials of endurance and time spent meditating. One day, Voem stumbled across a small hut in the middle of the woods in an area he had previously not explored. Immediately within moving into the clearing of the hut, a large man became visible when the door slowly swung open. Voem thought maybe he should flee, but the cat he was with sat firmly on his foot and showed no signs of moving. When the figure in the doorway approached, he had his sword drawn, only suddenly sheathing it when he saw the feline perched on Voem's foot. The stranger's demeanor changing suddenly, he introduced himself as Marcius, a retired soldier who had been living in the woods decades, relishing in the peace and tranquility of nature. Looking over Voem and his equipment, the soldier offered to help train the young man if he swore not to tell any of the villagers where his hut was located.
Making an agreement with the man, Voem spent each day with Vulpe, putting all of his physical training and raw power into actual combat moves. Day after day, the two sparred and Voem learned much about the art of combat. Each day Voem's cat followed him into the woods and watched the two men fight, expressing itself only in meowing and napping. One day, when Voem made his way to Marcius's hut at their usual scheduled time, he found the hut deserted. On the table, Voem found a letter that would forever change his life: Vulpe revealed that he was not actually an retired soldier but a mercenary, hired by one Jerob Cubskel, Voem's father, over 25 years ago to escort him on his merchant trade routes. One day while travelling by night, the two men were confronted by a sorcerer who transformed Jerob into a small cat for the sheer cruelty of it. Vulpe was only able to survive by hiding, and after the sorcerer had left, he took Jerob the cat to the Cubskel's home in Klontar where Voem's mother unwittingly took her transmogrified husband into her household. The note finished with an apology for leaving Voem so suddenly, but also that Vulpe had left his scale mail and longsword as a token of thank you for keeping his residence a secret for so long. When Voem exited the hut, the cat had disappeared from sight.
Not wanting to continue to live in Klontar with the shame of knowing that his father was a cat, Voem gathered up the gear that Vulpe had left him and set out to Landrinor in search of a new beginning.
