Special Abilities
--------------------
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Monks are proficient with the club, crossbow (light or heavy), dagger, handaxe, javelin, kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shortspear, short sword, shuriken, siangham, sling, and spear. Zen archers are proficient with longbows, shortbows, composite longbows, and composite shortbows in addition to their normal weapon proficiencies.

Monks are not proficient with any armor or shields.

When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, a monk loses his AC bonus, as well as his fast movement and flurry of blows abilities.

AC Bonus (Ex): When unarmored and unencumbered, the monk adds his Wisdom bonus (if any) to his AC and his CMD. In addition, a monk gains a +1 bonus to AC and CMD at 4th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every four monk levels thereafter, up to a maximum of +5 at 20th level.

These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the monk is flat-footed. He loses these bonuses when he is immobilized or helpless, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load.

Flurry of Blows (Ex): Starting at 1st level, a zen archer can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action, but only when using a bow (even though it is a ranged weapon). He may not make a flurry of blows with his unarmed attacks or any other weapons. A zen archer does not apply his Strength bonus on damage rolls made with flurry of blows unless he is using a composite bow with a Strength rating. A zen archer's flurry of blows otherwise functions as normal for a monk of his level.

A zen archer cannot use Rapid Shot or Manyshot when making a flurry of blows with his bow.

Bonus Feats: A zen archer's bonus feats must be taken from the following list: Combat Reflexes, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Far Shot, Point-Blank Shot, Precise Shot, and Rapid Shot. At 6th level, the following feats are added to the list: Focused Shot*, Improved Precise Shot, Manyshot, Mobility, and Parting Shot*. At 10th level, the following feats are added to the list: Improved Critical, Pinpoint Targeting, Shot on the Run, and Snatch Arrows. A monk need not have any of the prerequisites normally required for these feats to select them. These feats replace the monk's normal bonus feats.

Perfect Strike (Ex): At 1st level, a zen archer gains Perfect Strike as a bonus feat, even if he does not meet the prerequisites. A zen archer can use Perfect Strike with any bow. At 10th level, the monk can roll his attack roll three times and take the highest result. If one of these rolls is a critical threat, the monk must choose one of his other two rolls to use as his confirmation roll. This ability replaces Stunning Fist.

Unarmed Strike: At 1st level, a monk gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. A monk's attacks may be with fist, elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may make unarmed strikes with his hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed. A monk may thus apply his full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all his unarmed strikes.

Usually a monk's unarmed strikes deal lethal damage, but he can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on his attack roll. He has the same choice to deal lethal or nonlethal damage while grappling.

A monk's unarmed strike is treated as both a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons.

A monk also deals more damage with his unarmed strikes than a normal person would, as shown above on Table: Monk. The unarmed damage values listed on Table: Monk is for Medium monks. A Small monk deals less damage than the amount given there with his unarmed attacks, while a Large monk deals more damage; see Small or Large Monk Unarmed Damage on the table given below.

Appearance:

Vershan has on an elaborate robe that is covered in stars, and constellations. He has a small bow slung across his back, and the bow is well worn from use. It appears to be made from a dark wood, but it still appears half made. No other items grace his tall figure besides arrows. He holds himself with a graceful air, but his eyes are the most striking feature. His brown eyes stare out noticing the smallest of things.

Personality:

Vershan keeps himself focused on his mission to chart the stars, and improve his bow skills. He is constantly focusing on his bow, and its upkeep. When night falls he becomes a different person. He is constantly amazed at the new stars, and constellations around in the sky. He sews in new stars as he sees them, and he makes sure that each one is located in almost a star map on his body.

Background:

Vershan grew up in a small village where he learned very quickly to see the signs of rage from his father. He made sure to stay out of the house whenever that happened. He grew up like this until he fell into a group of rouges, and thugs. They taught the young boy how to use some small weapons and a smallbow. Vershan grew up not actually stealing, but he always found the true drunks from the fake militiamen, and he was a great lookout. Though this was how Vershan grew up he always wanted more from his life, so he decided to make a pilgrimage to the Twilight Monastery.

It was a grueling trek there. Vershan lost all of his wealth and most of his items to a goblin raid, but he did kill one of the little creatures by using his bow like a club. The bow snapped and the goblin died, but Vershan didn't have any time to do anything besides run. He only arrived at the monastery with the clothes on his back, and his broken bow. When he first arrived there the monk at the door shook his head and pointed at a pile of arrows with a longbow next to it.

"Fire that bow, and have it hit the center 10,000 times. After that if you truly feel the bow you will be allowed in."

Vershan couldn't believe how easy it would be to get into the monastery. He picked up the longbow and tried to pull it. He failed to even make the string quiver. Staring at the bow Vershan realized that it was going to be harder than he thought. He left his shortbow by the door and began to try and pull the longbow to its full length. He tried for the entire day, but he was unable to get anything more than halfway to full draw. Vershan almost gave up then and there, but he didn't have anywhere to go, so he stayed. As he stared up into the night sky Vershan began to just stare in wonder at the stars that he had ignored for so much of his life. Finding a new drive Vershan began to apply himself to his bow skill. It took Vershan a week to pull the longbow back. It was then that Vershan learned that he still didn't know how to fire it. Vershan began firing arrow after arrow trying to learn the ways of the longbow. Vershan began to actually hit the target after 2 months, and after 10 more months he could hit the center without fail. Vershan began to feel a rhythm with the bow. It was the same rhythm that his heart made when he looked up at the stars. It took Vershan a final month to reach the mark of 10,000 hits in the center. After he was done he left the longbow at the pile of arrows that still hadn't gone down, and walked into the Twilight Monastery at last. Vershan met with the monks there, and he learned all about the stars.

Learning about Lendor's message Versahn dedicated himself to him, and thanked the monks for the name, and the other information they had told him about. When he left the monk at the door offered him some arrows, and his shortbow back. They had repaired it for him, and Vershan was grateful to the door monk who had never given his name. Vershan began the travel to Diamond Lake, but he made sure to stop by a certain goblin camp, and he took revenge for the first breaking of his bow. Walking away from the camp Vershan traveled along the road learning more about the way of the bow, and he learned how to use his fists when things came too close. Arriving in Diamond Lake Vershan keeps looking for the signs that brought him there in the first place.
