Born to a poor farmer in Irrisen, spending his childhood trying to grow crops in a cold, harsh land, Varg grew up quickly, and grew up tough. (High Str and Con, low Cha)
When he was 13, the White Witch's secret police believed, erroneously, that Varg's father was plotting treason against the queen. The queen's soldiers killed Varg's parents, and Varg was forced to flee to Varisia, alone. His odds of surviving alone were slim, but by luck, he made it across the border alive, and emerged stronger for it. (Skill Focus (Stealth), Lone Wolf feat, Survival skill)
Varg travelled, for a short while, with an eccentric wanderer who saved Varg's life by giving him food when he otherwise would have starved. This wanderer believed that Aroden was still alive, and would show himself again one day, when his people showed their faith in him. Varg came to believe this himself. To this day, Varg prays to Aroden daily, and fully expects that he will manifest clerical powers any day now. He sometimes even preaches his beliefs, even though the only result is to convince people that he is crazy. (Trait: Unshakeable Faith)
Varg joined a band of wandering mercenaries, and learned their fighting technique, as he gradually made his way to Sandpoint. Though now separated from them, Varg considers the mercenaries his friends, and would help them if asked.
