Cavalier (Honor Guard/Strategist)

Ex: Challenge

Once per day, a cavalier can challenge a foe to combat. As a swift action, the cavalier chooses one target within sight to challenge. The cavalier’s melee attacks deal extra damage whenever the attacks are made against the target of his challenge. This extra damage is equal to the cavalier’s level. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day for every three levels beyond 1st, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level.

Challenging a foe requires much of the cavalier’s concentration. The cavalier takes a –2 penalty to his Armor Class, except against attacks made by the target of his challenge.

The challenge remains in effect until the target is dead or unconscious or until the combat ends. Each cavalier’s challenge also includes another effect which is listed in the section describing the cavalier’s order.

Order of the Dragon wrote:

Whenever an order of the dragon cavalier issues a challenge, his allies receive a +1 circumstance bonus on melee attack rolls against the target of his challenge whenever he is threatening the target. This bonus increases by +1 for every four levels the cavalier possesses.
Ex: Sworn Defense (Honor Guard) wrote:

At 1st level, whenever an honor guard issues a challenge, he can select one ally as his ward for the duration of the challenge. Whenever the honor guard is adjacent to his ward, he takes a –1 penalty to Armor Class, and the ward receives a +1 dodge bonus to AC.

Mount

A cavalier gains the service of a loyal and trusty steed to carry him into battle. This mount functions as a druid’s animal companion, using the cavalier’s level as his effective druid level. The creature must be one that he is capable of riding and is suitable as a mount. A Medium cavalier can select a camel or a horse. A Small cavalier can select a pony or wolf, but can also select a boar or a dog if he is at least 4th level. The GM might approve other animals as suitable mounts.

A cavalier does not take an armor check penalty on Ride checks while riding his mount. The mount is always considered combat trained and begins play with Light Armor Proficiency as a bonus feat. A cavalier’s mount does not gain the share spells special ability.

A cavalier’s bond with his mount is strong, with the pair learning to anticipate each other’s moods and moves. Should a cavalier’s mount die, the cavalier may find another mount to serve him after 1 week of mourning. This new mount does not gain the link, evasion, devotion, or improved evasion special abilities until the next time the cavalier gains a level.

Ex: Tactician

At 1st level, a cavalier receives a teamwork feat as a bonus feat. He must meet the prerequisites for this feat. As a standard action, the cavalier can grant this feat to all allies within 30 feet who can see and hear him. Allies retain the use of this bonus feat for 3 rounds plus 1 round for every two levels the cavalier possesses. Allies do not need to meet the prerequisites of these bonus feats. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day at 5th level and for every 4 levels thereafter.

Appearance:

The man before you has a steely expression. He has strong, masculine features and bronze skin, with his sturdy frame filling his armor comfortably, and the draconic crest on his cloak, shield, and breastplate denoting him as a member of the famous Order of the Dragon. His crimson cloak, the pride of every Dragon, is trimmed with gold and sweeps from brass buckles near his clavicle over and onto his back. His unfathomable eyes are a deeply pigmented, almost black color that meshes well with the rich bundles of black mane that cascade past his shoulders.

Personality:

Vanarch is brave and true, much like the prototypical hero. He holds honor and glory in highest esteem because his adoptive mother wisely taught him that wealth and power will come naturally through the embodiment of these values. Consequently he looks down on those who exhibit dishonor and cowardice, knowing that while power and authority can sometimes be attained by the treacherous, they can never be sustained through such petty individuals. Vanarch is direct and on-point when interacting with others, which can sometimes be misperceived as impatience and confrontational by those who don't know him well. He can sometimes loose sight of the big picture in his pursuit of glorious deeds.

Role-play Concept:

The sky is dark and the clouds are weeping. Among the smoldering ruins of a once great city, a lone boy, hogging a sheathed blade much to large for himself, hastily dashes from shadow to shadow - his desultory strides echoing among the desolate rubble. He rounds the corner of a half fallen building at full speed and ducks into an alleyway, but skids to a halt facing a fork in the path. The boy looks questioningly right and left - the ominously tall walls stand in mocking silence to his apparent dilemma. Shaking his head as if to clear his thoughts, the child rushes down the left path. After fleeing for what seemed to be an eternity in the alleyways, he emerges onto the ruins of a once grand avenue. His head rises and his heart elates as he gazes across at the twin dragon statues, knowing that they flank the bridge that leads across the canal and out of the city. Stumbling across the lanes and swerving onto the marble span, the boy broke into an all out sprint as the blade clangs rhythmically to his steps. Suddenly, the clanging of the blade and the splashes of the boy's steps ceased, and the only sound that echoes in the deafening silence is the boy's ragged breath. He is standing on the precipice - a span of the bridge has succumbed to the surging waters and fallen into the river. As the child stares at the foaming waters in disbelief, the reasons for his flight made themselves apparent: four cloaked figures appeared behind him, trapping him against the water's edge. They stood and watched each other for a moment and, suddenly, one of the cloaked figures approaches and kneels down to face him. The boy stared in abject terror as she gently cups his face with her hands and kisses him on the forehead. "Forgive me, child..." She whispers as she places her hand on the hilt of the sword he is hugging and drew it to the accompaniment of thunder and lightning...

Vanarch bolts upright from his bedroll as he instinctively reaches for his weapon. For a long moment he sat, trying to ignore the pain from that old wound in his abdomen as the nightmare is slowly dissipated by reality. Knowing that sleep has deserted him tonight, he decides to get dressed and watch the sun rise. Carefully stepping over the stirring forms of the other members of the caravan, he made his way to the edge of the campsite to his old friend and comrade: Silver. The thoroughbred neighs playfully as his master approaches and gently nudges Vanarch's arm. "Goodboy. Lets get you some water and fresh grass." Vanarch speaks softly as he runs his hand through Silver's coat and proceeds to release the reigns.

The sting of the icy waters of the Turandarok River is refreshing as Vanarch finishes the morning ritual. A sense of nostalgia washes over him as he gazes out across the river at the peaceful town of Sandpoint as it is being illuminated by the rising sun. As he mounts Silver and rides towards the bridge, he can't help but reminiscence about the time, many years ago, when he woke up in an unfamiliar bed with grave injuries and no memory of what happened to him. The only clues to his past were an empty scabbard and a Signal Horn baring a strange crest that Koya Mvashti, his adoptive mother and the women that took him in and nursed him back to health, claimed he was carrying when she discovered him dying on the banks of a nameless river. She has refused to discuss the circumstances surrounding his amnesia, saying that the past would only weight him down and that he should seek his own future. "There are all kinds of people in the world son." She would remind his younger self while changing his bandages: "There are some who are so defined by their heritage that they are consumed by it; some who spend their entire life running away from it; and some who are in the middle, carried by their station like a leaf in a river. But you, my boy, you are too thick-headed to make use of it and too stubborn to be defined by it... So you shall transcend it." Perhaps sensing the dormant potential within him, Koya enrolled the young Vanarch in the town's academy as soon as he was well enough to walk. It was there that Vanarch discovered the two great fascinations of his life: war and women - both embodied by an irreverent tomboy named Ameiko Kaijitsu.

Vanarch and Ameiko were like water and fire. While Vanarch has always been a respectful and considerate boy, Ameiko is almost his diametrical opposite: ambitious and hotheaded. Their friendship was tumultuous at first, with Vanarch often being the one left holding the bag in her many "brilliant exploits". Over time however, the two got to know each other and their bond grew from childish antics into genuine friendship. Sandru Vhiski, Vanarch's adoptive older brother, often made fun of his younger brother's taste in women, wondering how he can ever put up with a hothead like Ameiko. As an answer for his brother, Vanarch would always quote from his favorite book The Essence of Effortless Warfare: "Appear weak when the enemy is strong; Appear far when the enemy is near; Appear to retreat as the enemy advances; Appear to wane as the enemy waxes; Appear to lose, and you shall win." Vanarch would've been content spending the rest of his life with Ameiko in Sandpoint after they graduated from the academy, but fate intervened. Two month before his graduation, a letter arrived from the Military Academy in Korvosa, stating that his performance in the field of warcraft has drawn the attention of the Varisian high command, and that he is being drafted for officer training, after which he will be part of a paramilitary reserve that Varisia can call upon in times of war. Despite his affection for Ameiko, Vanarch knew he must make a name for himself if he is to be worthy of her noble stature. So with a hopeful yet heavy heart, he bade farewell to Sandpoint and a tearful Ameiko and left for the Military Academy in Korvosa.

Vanarch excelled once again in the Military Academy. His natural talent in the art of war eventually earned him a spot in the Order of the Dragon, a loosely knit group of cavalier adventurers and knight-errants that work to stamp out trouble across the land. After four years in Korvosa, the death of his grandmother Niska Muvashti coincided with his graduation from the Military Academy. Regretful over the fact that his training has kept him away from friends and family for so long, Vanarch hopped onto the next Caravan and headed home...

He hums a familiar tune as he guides Silver into town and towards the Rusty Dragon, wondering if Ameiko is still the same irreverent and reckless girl that he remembers.
