Does anyone know of any scenarios, modules, or AP where significant portions of the run take place in underwater environments? My search strings are either turning up nothing when I get too specific, turning up way too much (usually relating to underwater combat) to be useful. My reason for asking is that I backed the Dwarven Forge caverns kickstarter a couple years ago for a bunch of unpainted terrain pieces. I've finished painting them in a variety of schemes (underdark, ice, woodland), and have two sets left over to paint. I want to paint them as underwater terrain, and figure out ways to attach coral to the caverns. Aquatic terrain and maps would be a lot of fun to paint... but if I choose a paint scheme that's unlikely to ever be used, the only fun I'll have gotten out of it is painting it, not using it. If there's really no underwater content available in scenarios, modules, or AP, I will paint these last sets in a scheme more likely to see use. :)
That's a good recommendation. I've done multi-map before and it's no fun switching them out. Thank you for the additional recommendations. I don't have very many cavern tiles painted yet (50ish pieces, many of them silly little things and not wall/floor/corner) so I'll probably start with a smaller map scenario and work may way to the bigger ones. :) For storming the diamond gate I think I have some tiles prepainted that would work well for the first half of the scenario. I painted half my first kickstarter to look like sandstone (the other half is painted using the pokorny paints in the "default" color scheme: http://i.imgur.com/ILQtcPg.jpg I'll have to do the math to see if I have enough sandstone tiles to pull it off. Final act looks nuts. I have some experience with foam: http://www.dwarvenforge.com/forum?func=view&catid=520&id=61930& limit=12&start=24 (scroll to the bottom) I think the cliff I already have built could approximate one of the cliffs in the northwest corner. Id' need to build 3 more in roughly the same shapes to pull it off though. And some sort of wood + hot glue + twine bridge solution. It might be cool for a longterm goal, but it's a bit much to get any use out of in 2014. My crafting is backed up with painting all the caverns tiles, so getting foam done this year will be out of the question. :) Still, this NEEDS to be done. It's too cool. If anyone has further recommendations for more scenarios that have an underground "natural stone" map, I'm eager to list them all. Fodder for future weeks and more opportunities to use the terrain. =D
Thank you for the recommendations! I use 3-dimensional terrain frequently in my home game. :) I use hirst arts, foam, the first DF kickstarter, as well as various bits and pieces I've picked up to make a variety of environments. I did not back for the ice caverns, though they certainly look pretty! I'm looking for underground type stuff specifically because I want to break in the new set. :) This stuff is beautiful, but pointless if it's not used! I've categorized your recommendations so far. I'm very keen on finding the underground scenarios so I can try and pick some that our overenthusiastic PFS hasn't run in a while! (They're wonderful, haha. It's just amazing how much they run every week!) Here is the list so far. I've tagged it as spoiler since I'm not sure if knowing what environments the encounters take place in is spoilery. I don't think so, but better safe than sorry! Underground Scenarios Categorized:
Caverns/Natural Caves:
Underground Sewers:
Buildings:
Based on the name, does anyone know if 1:32 - Drow of the Darklands Pyramid has a good selection of underground stuff?
Can anyone recommend or list scenarios that use a cavern, burrow, underdark, or natural stone passages in the map? I backed caverns terrain kickstarter last year, and am eager to try gming scenarios where I can put the terrain to use after I paint it. So far I know of Confirmation, but that is due to be run by another of our local GM very soon, so I'd like to explore other scenarion options! Thank you in advance to anyone who can recommend a scenario!
My contribution to this topic are a pair of experiences where being able to replay for no credit would have been nice. . . I showed up to a PFS event with a friend of mine who had never played. This event had two tables. The scenario that I thought my friend and I would play ended up playing up to a higher tier; my friend would have been unable to play at the same table as me with his brand new character we had spent the afternoon building and learning. I could not play at the low tier table, because I had already played the scenario being run at that table as a player. So I was unable to experience the first scenario my friend played alongside them - I was in the front of the shop at a different table. I would have HAPPILY played for no credit, given away no spoilers, and accepted that consumables still get used and the death of my character was a possibility. (The risk and expenditure of resources "for no gain" is the price of replaying a scenario.) Yes, he could have played a played up and played a pregen to be at my table, but he rightfully wanted to play the character we had spent so much time building. He had a backstory and a personality for it that he was excited work with, as well as the fact that we'd spent the afternoon learning the rules of this one specific class to the point where he felt comfortable taking it for a drive. . . Another situation where being able to replay for no credit would have been nice happened a month ago: A scenario I was running had some unusual sign-up circumstances where there were a lot of people signing up, cancelling, and "I'll come if there's room". A veteran GM said they'd show up and run a second table if needed since the numbers were so shaky. It looked like the GM was going to be needed based on our sign-ups and facebook - there was a lot of movement and additions and possible shows. On the day of the game 7 people showed up, one of them the veteran GM. Not enough people to fill a second table. The veteran GM said he was going to play for "no credit". He was checking his device frequently, and left halfway through the second encounter. He said he was tired, but I wonder now if he realized that he couldn't play for "no credit" halfway through the event and wanted to bow out gracefully. If the latter, it would have been nice to have him around. He's a fun player to have at a table! Another veteran GM showed up that night too. They ended up burning a star to play, saying that they wanted to play with us and see some of the crafts I had made to represent each map. I feel bad that they had to burn this star or "go home". I understand that the star is for "credit", but it was "Silent Tide". You're not getting anything amazing from that scenario. He just wanted to play with us for fun! . . In both of these scenarios additional options were available. (The GM could have burned a star or sat in the background and heckled us and my friend COULD have played a pregen.) The point in sharing these situations is that the option of playing a second time for no-credit would have made for a nicer outcome and better social experience. Neither situation would have been to cheat or game the system. I think that players genuinely enjoy playing new scenarios more than running the same thing twice. However, from time to time replaying something for no-gain provides more options and flexibility for just wanting to have fun.
I have a few lore related questions about gillmen and I was wondering if there was an established answer. So gillmen are Azlanti descendants warped by aboleths to be emissaries and servants. How directly do they work with the aboleths? Is it likely that most gillmen would never have met them, or are all of the race in constant contact? Would a gillmen ever invoke their ties to the aboleths as a threat, or is this a guarded secret among their race?
The on time delivery, communication, quality, and packaging of the last kickstarter was very impressive. I've backed quite a few ks, and this one was hands down the most professionally run! (Though to be fair, there were two digital video game and digital delivery is that we're run just as well. I mean physical goods ks!)
I am so excited to see dwarvenite caverns. I love how carefree I can be with the pieces from the first kickstartef. It's nice to be able to haul the pieces around in a duffle bag and not worry about them. (I love bones over metal minis for the same reason, even if cost savings were not a factor!) I'm going to do one alternate paint scheme for sure. Not sure if I want to do blue and purple caverns or a lush green one or an ice one. Blue is my top choice for my I painted sets so far. Could double as underdark or underwater. |
