Hey quick question Flaming Crab,

With the Order of the White Rose what mechanism do they use to select their ward? Is it like Order of the Guard where everyday they can pick a new ward for their abilities or does the order run on its own unique timetable like only being able to select a new ward once per level?

The original intent of the order was only being able to select a ward a single time. The wards granted by Extra Wards were also intended to be permanent decisions. However, that can be awfully restricting... and next time we revise this book, we will let white rose cavaliers choose their ward(s) at the beginning of each day.

An interesting sci-fi idea: Combine this PDF with whatever rules Starfinder has for low gravity, and you can have a setting like Larry Niven's The Integral Trees.

That's a fun idea! We may even make a spiritual successor to the World Tree for Starfinder. Maybe the Planet Tree?

Thanks for the review! I'm glad to see you liked the book despite some major balance and language flaws, particularly with the archetypes. It definitely shows that I hurriedly made those archetypes last minute. I'll be revisiting the book in a few weeks to heavily clean those up or even throw them out... assuming I can find an uncorrupted InDesign file.

Thanks for the review! I'll think you'll be happy to see that we're trying our darnedest to make the upcoming Archetype Compendium archetypes more distinct.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Hi, all!

The last few months I've had a real blast helping get J Gray's (soon to be monthly) project The Letters from the Flaming Crab off the ground. Each "Letter" we hire 3-4 writers to tackle a completely different topic than the last brewed by J.

Letters that do well are explored further into more robust books. For example, we're about to get writing for Culinary Magic II underway with ALOT more magical recipes! These Letters are a fun way for us to toy with experimental topics in 10-12 pages.

However, as a ghost crab sized company, it's not financially feasible for me to hire 3-4 writers and 1-2 artists every single month. So Flaming Crab Games will be launching a Kickstarter next week to make that possible. (We did just get funding for the Archetype Compendium, but a completely different team is working on that. The Letters won't get in the way of the Archetype Compendium and vice versa)

But before we launch the Kickstarter, I'd love to have you guys vote on what topics we should tackle next. It doesn't matter how wacky or weird! These Letters are all about being spontaneous and fun! The poll is here. Feel more than free to add your own suggestions! The poll will continue during the Kickstarter. We just want to get an idea of what's going to be popular.

Also, we've got a sale going on for our 2015 Letters! J started a thread discussing that here.

As always, thanks for the review! I'm glad to hear that we've cleaned up a bit since our first book, here. This is a class I've debated with myself about giving a major face-lift, so this helps a ton if/when I do.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Jon, you're not the only one that's mentioned that the video is perhaps too silly and not informative enough. I originally figured that a book with the simple premise of 200 new archetypes didn't need much explaining and that a short ridiculous video would be better than an unexciting "interview" of me. Depending on how my day job treats me the next couple weeks, I'm going to try and go back and upload a more standard video that isn't so strange...

I was flipping through the CRB here, and it said true resurrection takes 10 minutes to cast. With my luck, however, it's going to take 12 days. Oh well, I can't stop casting now! I'll see you guys December 1st on Kickstarter!

Here are some changes for this launch:
Because we figured out how to significantly reduce printing/shipping costs we've reduced the base goal to 1/5 of what it was before (we exceeded that number in the first launch).

We're redesigning the way we're doing archetypes. Every single archetype will have something unique and flavorful. No archetypes will be simple combinations of classes or reused archetypes from other classes. Expect these archetypes to provide more options than your average archetype!

We're doing away with the voting system. It prevented us from showing anything off during the Kickstarter. We'll be able to show off multiple archetypes each week with examples and concept art!

----

Feel free to discuss what you'd like to see for the relaunch below!

Thanks a ton for doing an update, J. I wouldn't have been able to do one, myself.

In addition to the list from J, you guys will have to endure more punny spells from the "wizard" Bosco .

Also in development is Forgotten Classes, containing new classes (including the Divinist, General, Noble, and Shapeshifter) and class variants.

Will you have more archetype books in the works?

Yep! We'll either go back to releasing them in groups of 20 and/or we'll release the Archetype Compendium which will contain at least 150 of them.

Not at all! We aim to make the best products we can. And reviews like that help us out just as much (perhaps more) than the glowing ones!

Maybe the Once Upon an Encounter PDFs are simply too short to do much good. We'll see what others say before making that decision. It doesn't mean we have to stop making them. It may just mean we'll have to make them thicker, yet pricier products.

My review is up. Some might wonder why, considering the flaws I perceived, I have still given 3 stars: The encounter isn't that expensive. While it is true that most of the fun my players had were with parts not covered by the encounter as written, the nights game was inspired by what was written, and I still hold an idea of how to use parts of the encounter for something I hope will be more entertaining. If you desperatly need a ready to play encounter, by all means skip this. If you are willing to pay for a little possible inspiration, you could spend your money worse.

Thank you so much for the honest review!!

Wow, thanks for the review already Michael Hopkins!

If people would like, we could make things more easily reverse-engineered. Most of the foes will be standard creatures with little twists to match the story (like the Wolf getting Swallow Whole). So for future products we could make the text blue for new/ nonstandard abilities.

The Big Bad Wolf Wolf is a Dire Wolf with the Advanced and Half-Fiend templates if memory is serving me nicely.

Q. Are the two revisions due before February 15th?
A. No, only the "first draft" is due February 15th. I'll help with the possible two revisions up until March.

Can I just confirm that deadline for everyone?

H. The magic item must be sent to Flaming Crab Games before Sunday, February 15, 2015 to be considered.

Is that saying it has to be in by 23:59 on 14th Feb at the latest? Or is Sunday 15th included?
And what time zone are you based in?

Let's say items are due February 15th, 2015, 23:59 Central Time (CT)

Before I get to polishing up the ideas I'm sitting on, could you please clarify something I asked in the email, so I don't waste your time on something that's not wanted;

I do have some questions regarding what you consider 'setting-neutral', as there have been lots of new rules mechanics in the Paizo books (advanced firearms, grit/panache/luck pools, Hero Points, power components, Mythic spell variants, etc), many of which are open content. Would you accept items that powered or fed off such non-CRB resources?
I'm also interested in the theme of your upcoming campaign setting (post-Renaissance era Aztec, is that right?). Would it be worthwhile aiming for material that would see double duty, by groups who buy into that product line. Or would you want to save that for a later product?

Hi, hopefully I'm getting back to you soon enough. I've been out of town for a few days...

I just sent back an email, but here's a response for anyone else that's curious. Anything referencing open game content will be considered. Simply let me know if you're referencing material outside of the Core/Ultimate/Advanced books.

We're going to start merging the campaign setting with our crunchy books once we have something finalized. I wouldn't want to cause any confusion down the road.

I think it's the same reason a lot of new players try out monks and rangers. You don't need system mastery to see they get a lot of tools to play with. Personally I recommend a class like them to start out with, that way you can see what type of character you like (melee, spellcaster, etc.)

Copy/pasted section from the almost finished contract for the upcoming Flaming Crab Games product: The Dragon's Hoard

"Author will create a magic item for The Dragon's Hoard with the following requirements and conditions:
A. The magic item must be purchasable, meaning it has a gold value attached to it (not an artifact nor a cursed item).
B. The magic item's description must be less than 500 words. This only includes the section of the magic item labeled DESCRIPTION. In other words, the item's name, aura, CL, slot, price, weight, and construction are not included. If the magic item has a unique spell created by the Author, the spell is not included in this 500 word limit; in fact, spells do not have a word limit in this product.
C. The magic item may be a magic armor, magic shield, magic weapon, potion, ring, rod, scroll, staff, wand, or wondrous item. In addition, the "item" may be a set. Add 250 words to the limit of the "magic item" per extra item. (For example, a "magic item" that's actually two daggers would have a word limit of 750).
D. The “magic item” may also be a new armor/shield or weapon special ability, not unlike the flaming special ability for weapons.
E. The Author may submit up to 20 magic items to Flaming Crab Games.
F. The magic item may have multiple versions, such as the necklace of fireballs. The magic item's word limit is extended 100 words per additional version.
G. The magic item must not be an item copyrighted by another publisher, such as Paizo. Therefore, the Author may not submit an item that he created for RPG Superstar unless it is a unique version of such item.
H. The magic item must be sent to Flaming Crab Games before Sunday, February 15, 2015 to be considered.
I. A magic item concept (an unfinished magic item) may be submitted to Flaming Crab Games for partial payment.
J. The magic item must be a setting neutral item unless the Author creates a magic item that conforms to not yet published Flaming Crab Games' Ren Campaign Setting.
K. Any Open Game Content may be referenced. However, the Author must let Flaming Crab Games know which material is being referenced."
L. Submissions must be sent to flamingcrabgames@gmail.com. The file type must be .odt or .docx if attached. The magic item may be simply in the email unattached, or it may be shared as a Google Doc.

Any and all submissions will be considered for The Dragon's Hoard. The Author does not need to be a participant of the RPG Superstar contest. But all participants of said contest are invited. "

Anyone that wants to get started, simply email me at flamincrabgames@gmail.com and I'll get a contract sent to you ASAP!
