![]() I've more than one DM make liberal use of goblins in the past 30 odd years of gaming. In my opinion, the challenge to a DM isn't so much what to fight as it is why you are fighting it. The story is everything in a campaign. Don't get me wrong, my favorite part is the actual battle tactics, but that only holds so much attention if there isn't a story behind it. Why are we here? Why am I fighting this critter? That being said, the DM holds all the tactical cards. If you don't think your players are being challenged, set up the next battle such that the bad guys get the advantage; use water, tables, high places, darkness, difficult terrain, and so on to make the fight more challenging. Put it this way, 6-8 goblins equipped with bows raining arrows down on PCs that need to ford a fast moving river (difficult terrain and a chance of slip) with 3 or 4 war dogs to unleash once they cross the water makes a basic CR 1 encounter WAY tougher. I'd put that one at closer to CR 3 or 4. Even better, make that water an ice shelf and POW! CR 5 encounter. I'm kind of an evil bastage when it comes to stuff like that. ![]()
![]() I've been following these epic level recruitment threads for the last several days and I must say you have my interest piqued. I've been gaming for over 30 years (since the basic boxed set) and sadly I've had fewer than 3 characters ever play beyond 12th level. Some died but most just retired as we switched dms and started over. So the thought of playing a 20+ level character is exciting. I could submit an alchemist or a rogue. Whichever fits the campaign better. ![]()

![]() Sorry guys. I'm running a summer camp for jr programmers and engineers using the Lego Mindstorms kits. Its been hogging up most of my time the last few days. I will do my best to stay on top of things but my attendance will be spotty for the next little while. Twitchy suggests we set up a distraction to draw the beasts attention away then maybe we can grab that orb to remove it. ![]()

![]() That was some impressive initiative rolling ... well except for Crispon. I'm a little confused as to why morbak is playing for sritaro though. Ha'el will prepare a bomb to throw at the nearest cluster of spiders. It the map up yet? I will select a target. ![]()
Male Elf Alchemist 2 (HP: 11, AC: 17, TAC: 14, FFAC: 13, F: 4, R: 6, W: 0, Init: 4, Per: 4)
![]() Ha'el tossed his bomb and then watched in confusion as the wall explodes behind the target. He thinks to himself There is no way I did that ... right?. Then a mass of new enemies pours through the breach. Spiders?! The whole mess of them start attacking the pirates. Why are we attacking at all? Tactically, our best move would be to do as Zhiyo has suggested and let the pirates and spiders beat each other up then we step in to deal with whatever is left. There are 12 enemies in there. Let them have at each other. It matters not who wins. The spidery vermin will still be dead. The pirates will still be overcome. The party lives with nary a scratch. Seems sound and wise to me. ![]()

![]() Switch over to Ubuntu. Its free and much better than Windows XP. I'm an XP fanboy, don't get me wrong but Linux distro's are getting to be just too good to pass up lately. Oh, and for mapping I always used either gimp or photoshop with a bunch of downloaded brushes. It makes life really easy. ![]()

![]() Ha'el looks over his shoulder at Crispin and says Glad you could join us lad Then he seeks a cluster of pirates to toss a bomb at. If any of them are standing in a group of 2 or more he tosses the bomb at the one in the middle to maximize efficiency. Ranged Touch Attk: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

![]() So we are headed after the vermin? Not the seedy pirate tavern? Ha'el ponders Zhiyo's words and then says ... Well, the business we are in means we face things that will likely try to kill us every day. I don't think that should be the reason we choose our path or we would wind up as farmers or some such profession. Turns to Morbak and says ... Can you track them back to their den? What vermin exactly is it we are talking about anyway? Spiders? Rats? Or what have you? I should like to get my hands on some venom if possible. I can brew up something to give our blades a little more bite if we do come across some. ![]()
![]() And one for the dumb@$$ files ... I didn't actually die in this one either but the guy was no longer 'available.' Yet another rogue of mine ... I do seem to lose a lot of them ... We were tasked with the chore of breaking an innocent man from prison. When we get there we decided that the rogue (me) would sneak in and get some info before the party planned it's assault. I sneak in the side door, find the cell block, and just as I am about to pick the lock I hear guards coming. I snuck over to the door to take a peak and sure enough there were 4 guards headed our way. Too many for me to take out solo. So I came up with a freaking brilliant plan! I pretended to be a prisoner and locked myself in an available cell! What genious?! The rest of the party couldnt get me out ... I spent the rest of my days rotting in a cell for a crime I didn't commit ... or did? That one is confusing ![]()
![]() good call vuvu. I just might do that. Oh another funny story was one time we encountered a rainbow colored wall that we needed to pass. It was second edition and I forget the name of the spell but basically every color of the rainbow had a completely different nasty effect. Each layer would disappear once its effect was used up. It went down like this: Roll d8:
and so on. At that point we were down to 3 party members and we didn't have a dispel magic or anything else left to combat the layers of the wall and none of us felt like making death save after death save for every layer. However, we did find a box of newborn kittens a few rooms earlier. After 30 minutes of debate we finally decided that the kittens would serve a greater good if we pitched them one at a time into the rainbow wall dispelling each of the layers one at a time. I'm sure peta would have a problem with this tactic but it sure worked great! We took out every single one of those layers with no death and no one died. ![]()
![]() My 13th level rogue, may he rest in peace, was listening at a set of icy cold double doors when they burst open and a long thick white snake-like neck slid out the door and grabbed my rogue in its maw, pulling me back into the room and slamming the door shut behind me. After the rest of the party fumbled with the locked door (the debate itself if a monster can open a door, attack, close a door, and lock it all in one turn has continued for nearly 30 years now) they entered the room just in time to see an ancient white dragon spitting my rogue out over a bottomless chasm using his frosty breath weapon. ![]()
Male Elf Alchemist 2 (HP: 11, AC: 17, TAC: 14, FFAC: 13, F: 4, R: 6, W: 0, Init: 4, Per: 4)
![]() Whoa! It looks like I need to rss feed the discussion forum as well as the game play forum. I missed almost all of this. First off, sorry for your loss Morbak. That is never an easy thing to go through. Secondly, a tavern? Where is the adventure in that? Lets go get us some pirates!! Third, I never buy stuff with the gold coin I make in these games. So I will look through Florency for a worthwhile orphanage or charitable organization to donate my share to. ![]()
Male Elf Alchemist 2 (HP: 11, AC: 17, TAC: 14, FFAC: 13, F: 4, R: 6, W: 0, Init: 4, Per: 4)
![]() Ha'el suggests that the main road would probably be the best option for fulfilling our mandate of clearing out the bandits. However, the thought of running into pirates along the coastal route is very appealing ... very appealing indeed! I vote pirates! What was our total take for the treasure haul? ![]()
Male Elf Alchemist 2 (HP: 11, AC: 17, TAC: 14, FFAC: 13, F: 4, R: 6, W: 0, Init: 4, Per: 4)
![]() Good call Morbak. Those horses and cart would go a long way in aiding in the returning those prisoners to face justice and they would also be handy in furthering our disguise/secondary mission as merchant traders. I can't imagine the Dragons would want such things other than as food. ![]()
Male Elf Alchemist 2 (HP: 11, AC: 17, TAC: 14, FFAC: 13, F: 4, R: 6, W: 0, Init: 4, Per: 4)
![]() Indeed it is a significant hoard. As far as Ha'el is concerned, he would be happy with a mw dagger, mw studded leather, and a few coins to buy some alchemy supplies. I still need to outfit Crispin with some poisons. The dragons can have the rest of the loot as far as he is concerned. ![]()

![]() The stress and excitement is killing me! Its d8 + 3 (2 for con 1 for favored class) I think I will go with the average 4 + 3 = 7 I will have to finish leveling incrementally throughout the day today. If available, I wouldn't mind a mw dagger or mw studded leather armor. ![]()

![]() Ha'el suggests we tie the unconsciois ones up and put them in the wagon. Then we tie the consciois ones to the outside of the wagon so they can walk. We should put guards on them all the time. One to drive the wagon and one to watch the prisoners. ![]()
Male Elf Alchemist 2 (HP: 11, AC: 17, TAC: 14, FFAC: 13, F: 4, R: 6, W: 0, Init: 4, Per: 4)
![]() Ok, space is a bit tight here. I will toss a bomb on m12. That puts Ha'el in splash range so he will also need to make a reflex check. I would toss on n 12 to get all three bandits but that would force Sritaro to make a ref save as well. I've always been of the opinion that AoE attackers should be responsible for their attacks. I hated it when our sorcerer would lob fireballs centered on my rogue just because he could make the save! Lol Ha'el ranged touch attack on m12
Reflex save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Edit: DOH! ![]()

![]() I like the pbp format despite the slow pace of play. It gives me a chance to role play. At our gaming table, I don't role play much as we have other group members that handle that aspect of the game and I tend more towards running the strategy and battle tactics; so this is fun. As for this campaign, I am a bit concerned that there may be tension building between my play style and that of Sritaro. I get his build and background and that may be fun to play but my big concern is that if we walk up to every combat situation and announce our presence with a hearty "stand down and you won't be hurt!" I feel we will be giving up tactical surprise. That surprise round, when it is available, can mean the difference between life and death. We may need to have a discussion about this and when it is appropriate to choose diplomacy/intimidation over force. ![]()

![]() Ouch! This is a tight spot. Ok Ha'el takes a 5' step up one square to m11 and tosses a bomb at o12. Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
GM: reminder my ac is 21 now as I cast shield. I'm gonna need it. 8) Edit: @ Morbak I think that one with the red square is the one Sritaro knocked senseless.
