DESCRIPTION:

Tomas is a tall man with broad shoulders and well defined muscles. His hair is blond and his eyes blue, suggesting an Albadian heritage. The thing most people note about Tomas, aside from his intimidating size is that he is very forthright. You never have to wonder what he is thinking as it is usually written across his face. He loves practical jokes and clever word plays and his disposition is much lighter than what is sometimes expected from a paladin. The things that are harder to realize at first are his intense loyalty to the cause of Corean, and his friends, and his implacable will. He is simple one of the most tenacious people you will ever meet.

BACKGROUND:

Tomas was not always called such. In fact, as a small boy the only name he recalls being called was "Stonewall". He had the name because as an orphan running the streets he was often a force that simply could not be overcome by physical violence.

On one occasion he was supposed to guard the back of a leader of his gang who planned some mischief against a rival gang. When the rival gang gave chase the leader slipped by him and told him to hold that spot. He did. A mere boy, he kept the others at bay through sheer ferocity and stubbornness. By the time the city watch had come, battered and bleeding at his feet were no less than a dozen thugs. Tomas himself was punch drunk and fighting for consciousness because of his lack of blood. The name "Stonewall" stuck and he wore it like a badge.

On another occasion several years later, as a young teenager "Stonewall" was taken on a high risk scheme at the Agora. Little did young "Stonewall" understand the politics of a thieves guild and that this scheme had two purposes.

The first was a rather clever bait and switch robbery set up. With so many merchants in one place a younger guild member would steal from a merchant wares and his fellows would "catch" him at and yell for the guard. As the guard came running they would appear to try to apprehend the young thief, but of course he would get away. With the guard distracted by several of these set-ups happening at once, the real robbery would begin. Of course having their money stolen only made the merchants yell louder and would draw the guards away from where the next mark was. This was working just as it should and when the time came to leave young "Stonewall" was told what he had heard so many times before, "Hold this spot." and he tried. But before he had always been up against untrained street thugs or at worst a few guardsmen.

The second goal of the scheme was now in full swing; the disposal of "Stonewall". As the guard attacked him fought back with everything he had. It was not enough, and for the first time in his life, he failed to hold the line. As he lay there, beneath the shadow of the Golem, dying he saw the Golem move. It transfixed him and the pain in his body was replaced by wonder at this singular event.

Horatio Fimrin is a priest of Corean and in his sincere daily supplication he asks to be of use to the Champion. In general despair about the state of Mithril, especially when compared with Calastia he forever would ask how he could better serve his Lord. On the morning of the Agora scheme he heard a voice in his heart telling him to go to the Agora. There for hours until he witnessed the chaos the thieves caused, he tried to help restore order but the city guard was having difficulty with this task, as were the paladins that had rushed to the scene. Horatio found his heart in even greater despair. Had Corean spoken to him at all? Surely he had not sent him here to witness that he was ineffectual in stopping the disorder caused by some street toughs. And then he heard the voice again, telling him to follow the guard after the departing thieves. And he did. And it was there that he found the near dead body of "Stonewall" and the voice came one last time and told him to help the boy.

The boy lay there murmuring "It moved." while his broken body mended. When he was conscious again, he told the priest his story and though Horatio was initially skeptical he became convinced that the boy had seen what he had seen. His story was not always so well received. No one else had seen it and believing that a street tough had seen something the high priesthood had not was hard for many to swallow.

Changed, "Stonewall" began to study and tried to learn more about Corean and the priesthood and most importantly, the Golem. And the priest tried to learn about "Stonewall". As Horatio got to know him he realized that the boy truly had no name that he knew except for his moniker.

Feeling that "Stonewall" needed a new name, and one befitting his change of heart he asked the "Stonewall" what he would think if he were to be called "Tomas". He considered and suddenly his eyes grew wide in recollection of the early history of the Coreanic paladins. "Like Tomas Tirmauld?" he asked. The old priest nodded.

"Indeed, you have the same sort of heart as that man. That man who with a company of 18 paladins found himself surrounded by armies of orcs on the Plains of Lede. That man who had lasted for 4 days against their attacks, and who had spent the night fashioning a hiding place for his squire beneath the earth so that the widows of these fine men would know that their husbands had died as heroes. That man who on his last day had worried about water for his men, and had forgone his own ration despite being parched and sunburned. That man, who when the orcs charged again, had not waited for them, but had charged at them as well, and all who saw him saw his countenance changed so he look like Corean himself. He slew countless orcs, dozens, maybe hundreds in that final battle and many times that on those days before. That man who had placed himself as a dot in the sand that could not be avoided because he was such an affront to their monstrous pride, and yet they could not go through him because he simple would not yield. Suffering horribly he fought on. He was not so unlike you young man, not unlike you at all. And now Corean has focused you and I do believe it is his will that you make something of yourself."

The newly named Tomas wept, and said to Horatio, "I have come to call you father, and truly you are the only man I have called this. I did hope one day I might be found worthy to have your name of Fimrin."

"Nay boy, there is better blood than that in you. I think Tirmauld suits you nicely." the old man said with tears in his eyes. He was moved by the Tomas's simple sincerity.

"I have no proof that any such blood is in my veins, Father"

"And I have no proof that such is not the case."

The matter was settled then and there though this did not stop the grumbling of some, who thought the movement of the golem Tomas claimed was a lie and now this name? This name was pure hubris!

Somewhere in the next few years it became clear that he was not suited to be a priest. He preferred direct action and was quite a capable fighter. Using his dwindling influence Horatio saw the now young man trained to be a paladin. Tomas advanced in his training easily and had an instinct for both combat and religion. It was during this training that he began to have dreams, or visions as Horatio called them. At first he resisted, but Horatio assured him that avoiding these dreams would be a sin and a direct affront to Corean. So he started to follow them.

He would see an accident and move to stop it before it happened. He would anticipate the correct studying for a surprise exam the next day. He would understand things that had never been taught him except in these visions. And while these visions helped him and those around him, they provided no end of trouble for those jealous of him. He was a proud lying charlatan they whispered, and it with his charm it would not be long until they were being instructed by him. They seethed, but all of this seemed to miss the attention of Tomas. He went about everything, putting the best of himself into it and improving nearly daily. He finished his training and was a full paladin.

One day he had a vision of a black wolf following him. It followed him everywhere he walked in the dream and grew larger and larger. Finally he had to run from Mithril to escape its hungry maw. Telling Horatio about this saddened the old man, but they both knew what this meant and so he gathered his things, and saying goodbye he left to find what destiny the Champion had prepared for him.
