Toffer's parents died in the last crusades. He was left to be raised by a militant order of Iomedae who trained him from birth to be an even stronger holy warrior than his parents before him.
What they got was a mess of a human being. While naturally talented, charismatic, and strong, Toffer is lazy, boorish, and over-confident to the point of obnoxiousness.
After his training was complete, the clerics of Iomedae said goodbye to Toffer "reluctantly," and watched as he left to join the newest crusade into the World Wound. As he walked away, Toffer could have sworn that he heard a massive sigh of relief from the gathered clerics.
Imagine a good guy paladin version of a Cobra Kai member from Karate Kid. Super talented, good intentions, but a complete a&$%#$~ nonetheless. The idea is putting someone who has a good heart, but an icky exterior in a situation where he is forced to become a better person.
