Special Abilities:

------------------------------
SPECIAL ABILITIES
------------------------------
Bonus Feat Humans select one extra feat at 1st level.

Skilled Humans gain an additional skill rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.

Bred for War You tower above most other humans and possess a physique of hard, corded muscle. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Intimidate checks and a +1 trait bonus on your CMB because of your great size.

Veteran of Battle You have fought in several battles, and each time felt the presence of the divine guiding your sword-arm, making you ready to act at a moment’s notice. You gain a +1 trait bonus on initiative checks, and if you are able to act during a surprise round, you may draw a weapon (but not a potion or magic item) as a free action during that round.

Highlander You were born and raised in rugged badlands or hills, and you’ve become something of an expert at evading the predators, monsters, and worse that haunt the highlands. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Stealth checks, and Stealth is always a class skill for you. This trait bonus increases to +2 in hilly or rocky areas.

Lovesick Your love for another occupies your every thought, and you become despondent when you are away from that person. At the start of each day, if you are away from this person you take a –2 penalty on initiative checks and Perception checks. If you ever lose or fall out of love with this person, exchange this drawback for the Doubt drawback.

Resistance At 3rd level, the character gains a +1 resistance bonus on all saving throws.

Armor Attunement The character can attune herself to one suit of armor or one shield in her possession; she can change that attunement once per day. If she selects a normal set of clothing as her armor, it counts as having a starting enhancement bonus of +0. The attuned suit of armor gains a +1 enhancement bonus at 4th level.

Weapon Attunement The character can attune herself to any one weapon in her possession, and can change that attunement once per day. The attuned weapon gains a +1 enhancement bonus at 4th level.

Deflection The character gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC at 5th level.

Mental Prowess (Wisdom +2) At 6th level, the character chooses one mental ability score (Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma) to gain a permanent +2 enhancement bonus.

Physical Prowess (Strength +2) At 7th level, the character chooses one physical ability score (Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution) to gain a permanent +2 enhancement bonus.

Fast Movement A barbarian’s land speed is faster than the norm for her race by +10 feet. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor, and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the barbarian’s speed because of any load carried or armor worn. This bonus stacks with any other bonuses to the barbarian’s land speed.

Rage (18/18) Starting at 1st level, a barbarian can rage for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + her Constitution modifier. At each level after 1st, she can rage for 2 additional rounds. Temporary increases to Constitution, such as those gained from rage and spells like bear’s endurance, do not increase the total number of rounds that a barbarian can rage per day. A barbarian can enter rage as a free action. The total number of rounds of rage per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours do not need to be consecutive.

While in rage, a barbarian gains a +4 morale bonus to her Strength and Constitution, as well as a +2 morale bonus on Will saves. In addition, she takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase to Constitution grants the barbarian 2 hit points per Hit Dice, but these disappear when the rage ends and are not lost first like temporary hit points. While in rage, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration.

A barbarian can end her rage as a free action and is fatigued after rage for a number of rounds equal to 2 times the number of rounds spent in the rage. A barbarian cannot enter a new rage while fatigued or exhausted but can otherwise enter rage multiple times during a single encounter or combat. If a barbarian falls unconscious, her rage immediately ends, placing her in peril of death.

Rage Powers Starting at 2nd level, a barbarian gains a rage power. She gains another rage power for every two levels of barbarian attained after 2nd level. A barbarian gains the benefits of rage powers only while raging, and some of these powers require the barbarian to take an action first. Unless otherwise noted, a barbarian cannot select an individual power more than once.

Intimidating Glare The barbarian can make an Intimidate check against one adjacent foe as a move action. If the barbarian successfully demoralizes her opponent, the foe is shaken for 1d4 rounds + 1 round for every 5 points by which the barbarian’s check exceeds the DC.

Uncanny Dodge At 2nd level, a barbarian cannot be caught flat-footed, nor does she lose her Dex bonus to AC if the attacker is invisible. She still loses her Dexterity bonus to armor class if immobilized, or if an opponent successfully uses the feint action against her.

Sixth Sense (+2) At 3rd level, the superstitious barbarian gains a +1 bonus on initiative and a +1 insight bonus to AC during surprise rounds. This bonus increases by +1 for every three levels after 3rd.

Reckless Abandon While raging, the barbarian can take a –1 penalty to AC to gain a +1 bonus on attack rolls. The AC penalty increases by –1 and the attack roll bonus increases by +1 at 4th level and every four levels thereafter.

Battle Roar When the character successfully demoralizes an opponent using intimidating glare, he also deals 1d6 points of sonic damage to that opponent.

Improved Uncanny Dodge At 5th level and higher, a barbarian can no longer be flanked. This defense denies a rogue the ability to sneak attack the barbarian by flanking her, unless the attacker has at least four more rogue levels than the target has barbarian levels.

Keen Senses At 7th level, the superstitious barbarian gains low-light vision.

Appearance and Personality:
Thorun Madsen is a mountain of a man, standing well over six feet tall and built like a stone wall. He has thick corded muscles, hair over most of his body, and a partially braided wild mane and beard; 'grizzly bear' comes to mind when looking at him. He has a blue tattoo over his right eye that depicts a large claw scar.

Thorun is a rowdy man of big appetite, be it for food or mead or fighting or life. He is quick to laugh and fight and make friends (or enemies). He's not a selfless man who sticks his neck out for strangers, but those he is close with he defends fiercely. But under the layers of rowdiness and bravado he is a deeply lovesick and guilty man trying to make things right.

Background:

~Background Summary~
Thorun grew up a strong viking warrior who quickly made a name for himself fighting for Dublin. He was sent to reinforce the High King against the forces of Connaught and Breifne, barely surviving the battle. While recovering he fell in love with Aoife, daughter of the King of Leinster Dermot MacMurrough, but they were discovered. Thorun fled to Largay to protect both of them, finding work as a laborer under the McKiernan family. However he was overridden with guilt when Ailbe, the Queen's nephew, was slain in the battle at Largay by Boho warriors. So he took his axe back up and set out to have vengeance for Ailbe and to be with Aoife, consequences be damned.

~Background in Depth~
Thorun Madsen was born in Dublin to one of the few tribes that still maintained viking traditions. As with his peers he was given a spear by the time he could walk, but quickly pushed past them as he came of age and found himself towering over those around him, an enormous warrior with the ferocity and strength to back it up. He was thrown into small skirmishes and battles for Dublin where he earned a name for himself, being known for crashing into walls of men to scatter and strike fear into them.

It was not long until his name reached the ears of King Ascall Mac Ragnaill and the Dublin King had Thorun brought into his forces. Thorun became a somewhat well known champion for the Dublin forces, being thrown into throngs of men to boost morale and shatter enemy lines. It was a harsh and violent life for months, and eventually Thorun bit off more than he could chew. Thorun and a small group was sent to reinforce Dublin and Leinster at the side of the High King against the forces of Connaught and Breifne. Thorun tried to prove himself to the Leinstermen, recklessly charging into a line of shields and spears, and ended up surviving the battle only by the skin of his teeth.

In the aftermath Thorun was among the sick and wounded being treated by Leinster healers. As they lay there, the King of Leinster Dermot MacMurrough walked through the sick and wounded in an attempt to help boost morale. He brought his daughter Aoife with him, who was just as good for morale as the King himself. As they passed Thorun, Aoife was completely unafraid of the towering viking warrior and gripped his hand for a moment as she passed, giving him a comforting smile.
Thorun felt his heart flutter in a way that battle has never made it.

Over the next few weeks, Thorun and Aoife met several more times in secret. It began as lust but rapidly delivered into a forbidden love. As Thorun's wounds healed they both knew he would have to return to his people soon so their visits became more frequent, and they became less careful. Eventually their luck ran out and they were discovered in the act. Aoife wanted to fight to remain with Thorun, but he knew they would never be accepted and didn't want her life destroyed over this. He told her to say he forced himself on her, and then fled into the night.

Thorun made his way into Largay, hoping to hide from the King of Leinster in the land of his enemies. He hid his weapons and found work as a semi-freeman laborer with the McKiernan family. It was a boring and dull life for somebody raised on the edge of battle, but the McKiernan's treated him well. His restlessness would not go away though, and when he heard news of the battle at Largay against the warriors of Boho had claimed the life of the Queen's nephew, Ailbe McKiernan, he was overridden with guilt. Ailbe was a good and kind young man who Thorun had become fast friends with. He was also predicted to be a great leader. He was hiding like a coward, afraid to live his life, and the family that had treated him well was suffering because of his refusal to meet the struggles in life head on. He could have told them of his past, taken up his axe, and gone in Ailbe's stead.

It was too late to save Bradan, but it was not too late to avenge him, and to find his way back to Aoife. Tradition be hanged, the King of Leinster be hanged, and anybody that dared to oppose him be hanged. He will cleave his way through an ocean of corpses if he has to.
