You will all be missed, whoever you are--I mean were.

Now that I'm home, I have for the party's consideration:

A human ranger 3

A human rogue 2

And a elf barbarian 1/ranger 1

All are CORE. I also have some 4th and 5th level characters (a fighter, a sorcerer, and an illusionist), but I don't want to push the CR of the encounters so high that the lowest level characters stand a high chance of death.

Still got room for one more?

Basically there's a couple of ways to play on the message boards here. You can just find a game and play using whatever version of Pathfinder (or honestly, whatever game system) you and your group decide to play, however you want. Or you can play in one of the various Paizo 'Organized Play' guilds (available for Pathfinder, Starfinder, The Pathfinder Adventure Card game, and Pathfinder 2ed).

Here's a link to the copy to the book, Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild Guide, you need to play the first edition of the Pathfinder RPG game in organized play (AKA Pathfinder Society). It explains how to build and progress your character(s) through organized play.

Once you read that you can click on this character's icon (or the other helpful links supplied above) to find further links and tips to play online.

Hope that helps.

Nevermind. Found it.

Maybe adding a direct link to the top of the thread would good.

Yeah, doing sometimes visual riddles on your phone can be a bit of a stretch. Also this is one of those adventures that requires a lot of verbal interaction, not always easy in format that hopes everyone posts at least once a day (and sometimes on weekends).

Speaking as someone who has sometimes written stuff like this, I can say that "Overflow Archives" is a great game for in-person play if you can take five-ish hours. Otherwise, for me it's a bit of a rush though not as much of a rush as some--"Out of Anarchy" for instance. It's a great game, but the sheer number of paths the party can go down is pretty daunting for a PbP.

My advice is to stick to the most straight-forward missions (and lots of dungeon crawls) particularly the earlier season 1-6 missions. "Thornkeep" isn't bad for this if you go the dungeon crawl route.

The sweet rewards of almost near-to-adjacent success!

CHRONICLES!

As I am an optimist and had to report this game a couple of months ago you get all your prestige points even though the party did not complete the primary, or enough of the secondary victory conditions. Some of these were needed to unlock the second Dark Archive boon. Also the group lost out on 170 gp each for not dealing with the sly, occasionally fox-faced man.

As for the other Dark Archive Boon, so long as Hoo doesn't open her mouth for any reason, Shaine shouldn't notice the copy of the Darklands Precepts in her possession allowing you to pass it to Zarta later.

Make sure your chronicle looks good, and that you download it. Let me know if there are any mistakes.

If folks have any questions, about chronicles, the scenario, or whatever, lemme know I love spoilers.

I still haven't been able to get Paizo customer service to answer my emails requesting GM control over the thread. I tried again earlier this week, Normally they can do it inside a week. Until they do, I won't be able to render the thread inactive, so feel free to chat away. ;)

Not to be flip buuuuuut, I took over a game for a GM who bowed out back in April of 2020 (five years ago now) and sent the "Have you taken over an orphaned thread? Do this." email (3-4 times now over the space of months getting an automated reply each time) to what I guess now is a super-heavy dead compacted star, from which not even light can escape.

Any chance we can get that fixed? Eventually, I would like the ability to shut the thread down.

Oddly, I can't find the onsite instructions for the "Have you taken over an orphaned thread? Do this." I only ever stumble upon it by accident--maybe someone could look into that too. Here are the Gameplay and Discussion thread links. If you require anything else from me let me know by way of a 'manual message'. I don't entirely trust the automated one anymore. It lies. Thanks.

Just as the revelation sets in there is a sound like a reverse explosion from upstairs that shakes the foundations of the building causing dust to fall from the cracks in ceiling created during the great earthquake years before.

The Dean and the Pathfinders launch themselves at the stair, but are met with a vast swarm of tooth fairies. Shaine cries out to seal the doors, and turns to face the threat. With a word and a gesture fire explodes from the stairwell, engulfing the swarm and sending the stragglers fleeing to all corners of the the lobby.

Kreighton Shaine and the senior Pathfinders mount the stair and encounter a strange trick of the First World as the stair seems to climb higher, and higher stories above its original length. It's widened too, with balconies, alcoves, and side galleries, all of nonsensical Escher-like construction. One new doorway opens upon a vast alien desert in the midst of a sandstorm.

Eventually, the end comes, but not until a few alien horrors from the First World escape into the archive proper warping reality with their very presence, before being rooted out and banished back to where they came from.

So the party has searched downstairs and on the main floor of the library for the missing scraps of the scroll you need to get back to Mistress Koi, that leaves the mezzanine area (where Koi is), the front lobby, and the upstairs spriptorium. I just need a rough idea of how you would like to proceed.

A fishing hook snatches Stefan's ear as they come up the waterfall that is the stairs up to the library's main hall.. Something begins to tug at it.

Apparently in the time you have been downstairs the pair of them have returned to their fishing spot atop the overturned shelf beside the mezzanine waterfall.

Note: There's a bit of a lip around the stair down that keeps about a foot of water on the floor of this room, making it a shallow bog.

Indeed, the warpriest kit Stefan carries, + 7 servings of rations comes to +47.5 lbs. of encumbrance before adding in the tome itself. Now some of that gear might be hanging on Stefan's belt so lets call it about +45 pounds of weight added to Hoo's (STR 8) encumbrance. That with her other gear puts her up into 'heavily encumbered' territory (MAX DEX bonus to AC = +1 [lowering her AC by 1], AC skill penalty -6, Spd 15' [Note: Hoo's Spd characteristic should be 20' because of her armor, an armored coat, would slow her down], and Run at x3 Spd).

As he speaks the whispering voices cry out in a cacophony of anguish drowning out Stefan's words. As he withdraws with the book from the alcove the darkness comes with him.

The darkness extends to a radius of 15' all around Stefan--or rather the Darkland's Precepts. Every noise Stefan makes seem to be magnified

Again the screams of a dozen tormented souls can be heard emanating from the darkness around Stefan to the point that Zahd can barely hear him. He and Boomer can tell because the mummified nose, lips, and beard are all still attached to the cover. It is the legendary Darklands Precepts.

As they slide it from the shelf they can hear the susurration of distant, whispering voices softly whimpering in pain all about them from the dark.

Outside, of the alcove the darkness seems to swell outward encroaching upon Xavier's feeble light.

Yep, alls under Knowledge (arcana)'s rules for identifying an ongoing magical effect--DC 22. This is indeed (at its core) magical darkness. If Xavier is using something beyond the light spell he can use that to defeat it. I would also note that darkvision is a thing.

The party enters the southeaster section of the sublevel after Boomer spots a scroll fragment just inside the doorway, Vozzik can tell that is magical just by looking at it.

The room itself seems to be a storage place for books pertaining to genealogy. However there is something odd about it. Off in the corner behind the door the party discovers a patch of darkness that does not seem to fade regardless of how close they bring their lights. Vozzik can see the magic permeating, and supporting the unnatural darkness.

Assuming that he looks into the abyss of darkness long enough with detect magic, Vozzik can tell that it's magic is of 'moderate' strength. The scroll fragment reads as 'faint'.

He doesn't believe in 'game balance'. Gandalf always lets him pass. As a feat, he has Exotic Weapon Proficiency (beard). The city guard often question him, just because they find him so interesting. His dice bag is woven from tarrasque leather. His TPKs end game lines. His blood cures moderate wounds. He once punched a flumph. Yes, you heard me. He belongs to a prestige class whose sole requirement for entry is just being him. ♬ He is indeed, the most interesting GM in the world. ♬

The party sloshes back downstairs into the library basement to continue their exploration.

Quick note: Mistress Koi is still pumping out a lot of water from the mezzanine level, and while the water level on the main floor and in the basement are at shallow bog-level at present it won't be long before it climbs back to its former depth downstairs and then perhaps a hour more before the water fills the basement and seeps up, and on to the main floor (a total depth over the spiral stair of about 16').

As before, the only lighting in the basement is what filters down from above through the stairwell, and whet you bring with you.

I am probably wrong, but it occurs to me that we don't know if this is the real Kreighton Shaine, or if this is whatever shapeshifting imposter we're chasing.

Just place yourselves where you like in the room so you can see him. Note: it does take time for sense motive to work. Thus far though he checks out.

Also, since they were mentioned, and no doubt playing on people's minds as the look at the Master of Scrolls, or the person to their left, characters may attempt a knowledge (nature) check to try to remember what they might know of doppelgangers.

Knowledge (nature) DC 13+:
Doppelgangers are a mysterious race of shapeshifting monstrous humanoids. The idea of seeing an apparition that looks like yourself before you die comes from the legends of doppelgangers that kill their intended victims before replacing them, rubbing the point home by showing their target that the doppelganger will be taking over their life, position, and family, and no one will know the difference.

Knowledge (nature) DC 18+:
As shapeshifters they can become near perfect copies of anyone they encounter, even to the point of being able to use that person's magical items, sword stance, and little mannerisms of all sorts. Many people (RIGHTLY!) fear that they have infiltrated nearly every level of society. However their total numbers and whether they all work to some singular prupose. or even what that purpose is are all in question.

Knowledge (nature) DC 23+:
Not many people know but doppelgangers are telepathic. They use this ability to pry information from the minds of their victims, get "into character" and those around them to improve their disguises. A thin sheet of lead (possibly worn over the head) will block this effect.

knowledge (nature) DC 28+:
Doppelgangers alien minds are immune to charm and sleep effects.

This large chamber is crammed with desks and lecterns designed for copying scrolls and manuscripts. Along the north wall, a tall, broad shelf sags with sheaves of parchment, while near the exit to the south, where a stack of ceramic ink jugs once stood near wall-mounted racks of quills. Two bays of windows on the west wall offer an impressive nighttime view of the Lodge’s greatest landmark, Skyreach Tower, while the eastern windows overlook the library’s main stacks. Overhead is a beautiful mural of Desna reaching out with one finger to probe a young gnome's ear.

A 8-foot-long albino alligator looks up at the Technicolored™ Stefan from the floor with reptilian interest.

Xavier shoves open the door and Stefan jumps through ready for anything. All the motion however seems to cause the pile of precariously stacked clay jars along the wall opposite the door to wobble, and then fall like oranges at a fruit market. As they clatter to the floor one after another they break showering the entryway in a rainbow of vivid inks, that dapple the witchwolf's fur.

The party sloshes up the through the spiral grilled stair, and the deluge of pounding water that is spilling off the edge of the library's mezzanine. Thoroughly drenched, and looking like a group of drowned possums they make their way across the floor up the step and into the entrance lobby where thankfully the floor is dry.

The lobby remains empty (and strangely quiet if the party decides to close the doors on the waterfall behind them).

Following the stairs up they are confronted with a closed door upon the second landing.

"Doppelvuml?"

So after the other Virml has 3 votes (Hoo, Vozzik and Xavier). Where would you like to look for him? He was heading upstairs from the front lobby the last you saw him.

The party doesn't find anything obvious in the hall but then again trying to find a slip of paper in a library is a bit like trying to find a particular hair on a barber shop floor.

What's next?

Well, there are a lot of dictionaries, and few thesauruses.

The remainder of this "wing" of the library basement seems to a collection of narrow, curving hallways filled with shelves, and piles of sodden books (and a couple of step stools and ladders) on the floor. The newly lowered water-level shows the extent of the damage, and makes traversing the stacks easier.

The dictionaries in the formerly-locked 'dicthinarium' (as Virml called it) stoically remain dictionaries. Many seem to be in different languages--or perhaps were written by people who did not know how to read or write, but could somehow still maintain proper page formatting.

If you are worried about missing something, and given that there are not likely too many mimics in the library, the party members could just take a couple of minutes per 5-foot-cube of space, and check every inch of it, by Taking 20 a whole lot. You could divide the task so that it would take less time.
