Thane is the half-orc bastard son of the Sommarian chief Aytaç, and a human slave girl, Alexandra. Alexandra was a simple villager, who was taken captive when Aytaç raided the human settlement of Hartland for slaves and plunder. Aytaç took her as part of his spoils, eventually raping and impregnating her. She died during childbirth, though her son, Thane, survived. Though he never knew his mother, Thane thought about her often, wondering what she had been like, whether she had been happy among the Karahun, what the village of Hartland had been like. Slowly, Thane began to identify more and more with the human half of his parentage, eventually teaching himself to speak and read the human tongue by conversing with other human slaves. Thane was always an outcast among the Karahun tribe. Though he excelled at the tribe's specialized form of archery, he was ridiculed for his half-human heritage. His half-siblings and fellow tribesmen continually ridiculed him for his smaller stature, inferior strength, and shorter tusks. Eventually, however, he was able to make a name for himself among the tribe in a series of tribal wars with the Kassoi. For his bravery and prowess on the battlefield, his father granted him permission to marry, and he took the lovely orc girl Sevda as his wife. Around a year later, after the the conclusion of the wars with the Kassoi tribe and their subsequent destruction, Aytaç requested that his bastard son join him in a raid upon a nearby human village. He declared that it was high time he begin training for his eventual position as his older half-brother's Shield-Sworn, a position usually filled by the chieftain's younger, full-blooded brother. Taken aback by this honor, Thane accepted his appointment, and rode out with his father and the rest of the raiding party the next morning. However, when they came upon the village and Ayteç ordered the attack, Thane was hesitant. As he rode in the charge on the village, watching his fellow orcs slaughter and kidnap these humans, he began to have a change of heart. "These are my people as well," he realized. "There, that one's nose looks like mine. And there, that one's eyes are the same color as mine." He could not bring himself to slaughter his mother's people in this way, and did not lift his weapon during the entire raid. He rode home with the triumphant raiding party in somber silence. His inaction did not go unnoticed, however. One of his younger half-brothers who had been on the raid noticed his hesitancy, and at the great tribal gathering later that night, publicly called him a coward, and a sniveling human-child. Outraged, Thane tried to blow off the accusations, but his father was curious. He made his younger son explain himself, and soon learned the whole story of Thane's inaction during the raid. A blazing fury descended upon chief Aytaç, and he immediately ordered Thane to leave the tribe. No son of his, bastard or no, would sympathize with the weak, pathetic humans. They were sources of wealth and slaves, nothing more. Thane tried to defend himself and the humans to his father, but his protests fell upon deaf ears. Thane was exiled from the tribe in disgrace, forced to run while the tribe's warriors chased him away with naked steel and flying arrows. As he ran, out of the corner of his eye Thane saw his father entering his tent, then quickly exit, dragging Thane's young wife and child out with him. Thane quickly lost sight of them, but he heard the screams of his wife and child, and their abrupt silence. His tears did not stop falling until well after he left Karahun lands. That was ten years ago. Now 33, Thane has spent the last ten years wandering Sariel, planning his revenge on his father and his former tribe. He has embraced his human heritage, perfecting his archery under the finest masters, and training his body within some of the greatest monasteries. His travels have made him wise to the ways of the world, learning when it is best to stay silent, when you should flatter, and a show of force is the most prudent option. Friends and associates have taught him many tricks to survive and thrive, and he has become known as a sort of wandering problem solver. Need monsters killed, a tyrant overthrown? Thane Makiri can make your problems go away… for a price. There isn't much moony in the business of revenge, you know. Thane will need money and men for when he returns to the Karahun tribe. They will find that the humans are much stronger than they thought when Thane destroys them with the knowledge and techniques of the ones they scorned...
