Historically, guns had a revolutionary effect on our world. They were an equalizer - you didn't require extensive training to be effective en masse with muskets. The large investment in time and money to construct and be proficient in wearing plate armor became redundant.

Of course something outside of our historical perspective is how magic would effect society - even given that magic is rare.

One way to avoid getting overly attached to a character is to switch characters. Once you play different characters with different motivations and personalities, you can get into the role of your character without going overboard.

If you do this, you will find some of your characters to be more memorable than others. However, its likely that you will find you enjoy more than one of the characters you roleplay.

Yeah but some groups prefer roleplay to rollplay.

As long as that goes both ways. I don't want an enemy to surprise me unless the GM can convincingly roleplay hiding in ambush. :-)

One thing missing from the guide is to design your character in the context of the campaign world.

If you build The Best Gunfighter In The World but firearms don't exist, then your roleplay experience may differ from what you were expecting.

They may be weak, but at least they make better Rogues than the Rogue class.

This thread reminds me of a National Enquirer title I once saw - "Space Aliens Taught My Dog to Knit".

Together with the Captain Picard reply - "Make it sew".

Never trust what a house says, they typically have more than one story.

If your character was holding the door at the moment he was panicked, I could see slamming the door as a violent means of dropping what you are holding, which is consistent with being panicked.

Ask your team-mates to shoot at you instead of the giant. When they miss your AC 30 the giant takes the damage. :-)

Turns out it wasn't licensed.

This guy is a friend?

My group of friends just doesn't seem to have as much lying going on, as it seems here.

Even when we lie to each other, it's well known, and it is more of a "wink & nod" kind of lying, because we all know what is really going on.

The only circumstance in which there was my old friend, who we will call Jace, who is a pathological liar. I mean, he had an actual condition, and would lie, even if it made no sense to do so, and had no reason to think it would not be seen as a lie, and would deny it being a lie, even when confronted with undeniable evidence.
We had an unspoken understanding, as I was his only constant friend.

Are you Jace? :-)

Use Hero points so your wife has an emergency resource for getting her character out of a jam.

A longsword crits on a 19 or 20 for x2 damage, so 10 percent of the time you get 1xdamage extra. A battleaxe crits on a 20 for x3 damage, so 5 percent of the time you get 2xdamage extra.

Theoretically these are the same, but scoring crits more often is better for a couple reasons - crit effects, and less wasted damage on low HP targets.

Though it requires exotic weapon proficiency, a falcata (crit 19-20,x3) is strictly better than a longsword.

Anyone basing their chracter progression on critical feats will want a weapon that crits on 18-20, then take Improved Critical or use a keen weapon.

When paired with someone with Butterfly's Sting, you may look for a weapon with a high crit multiplier rather than large crit range.

I think that the Titan Mauler's Massive Weapon abillity is nice and all but you wont be gaining anything from it unless you are weilding a gargantuan dagger, something anyone can do now but with a penalty to attack. Who would choose to build a character using this weapon and what do they really gain by doing so?

Titan Mauler / Knife Master. "Now THATS a knife".

As GM I never let the social roll happen unless the player can describe what they are trying to achieve and how. Not the details, just the intent and the general idea of how they mean to go about it. For example the player might wish to make a soldier angry. That is the intent. They then would say how, insult his fighting skill? Imply his wife was also into a bit of extra martial sword play?

Reliable remark to make a soldier angry: "Did your MOMMY make that armor for you?"

Weapon Focus and Power Attack. Weapon Focus because level 1 characters have trouble hitting, even with 18 Str. Power Attack for fighting anything that you can't one shot without Power Attack. Though there are other good options, you won't regret having these 2 feats as you level up.

"An incorporeal creature can enter or pass through solid objects, but must remain adjacent to the object’s exterior, and so cannot pass entirely through an object whose space is larger than its own."

It seems to me that spectres hiding in walls beyond detect range is not legal, as they must remain adjacent to the object (wall) exterior. It also seems they could not pass through a wall if the wall is too thick.

Thats called Futurama, with Zap Branigan et al.

You could try to trap it by using its colossal size against it. Essentially, trap it by getting it to follow you into a place it can get into, but not out of.

If going with Agile weapons, you could use either Elven Curve Blade or a pair of Kukri to get a 18-20 crit range, which can be expanded to 15-20. Use Piranha Attack instead of Power Attack. Two Weapon Fighting is very feat-intensive, so the 2H weapon might be the better option.

Celestial Chainmail would be good armor when you can afford it. Not being a Fighter with armor training, you will quickly bump into the max dex limit for armor.

You need another O! ADD ANOTHER O! (Or get rid of one, for some of you)

The only thing I like different, and I just house-ruled it in, is a feat at every level, more starting HP (we just add the con score at first level) and a +1 to an ability score at every even level that cannot be the same one as the last one.

If you are mounted it appears your mount is doing the charge (full-round action) which lets you do an attack as a standard action. Which would mean only your mount would get the +1 to hit, and only your mount would have the -2 AC penalty.

Somehow this seems wrong - I visualize the rider and mount as a single unit.

Here is an idea for a hybrid system: part point buy, part die roll.

1. Design a character with 20 or 25 point buy, no stats allowed below 10. Choose a race and class.

2. For each attribute at 10, roll 4d6 keep 3. No swapping is allowed - you get what you get.

All characters won't be equal, but they will differ in the power of their secondary stats rather than their primary stats. Race and class is chosen during step 1 so you can't take advantage of a good random roll (though it might make multi-classing more attractive).

Example: 20 point fighter with (pre-racial) 16 Str, 14 Con, 14 Dex. Int, Wis and Cha determined by 4d6 keep 3. Whatever you get for the rolled stats, you will have a capable fighter with the point-buy physical stats.

I think the answer to most of these is "it depends". What drill sergeants put new recruits through at Boot Camp can be considered torture. However, the purpose behind it may be to preserve the lives of soldiers going into battle by making sure they are prepared.

Intent can be more important than the type of action. Telling someone a white lie probably isn't evil, telling a lie that you know will cause the death of many people if it is believed is evil.

Maybe have something that needs to be crafted from the 4 elements. Dirt (clay) plus water plus fire suggests pottery, but I'm not sure how to fit in air.
