Stark was raised in a disciplined home, his parents ever striving to teach him of the virtues of civilization, study, and structure over the barbaric savagery of anarchy, the uncivilized, and the innate magics of sorcerers, and those like them. He felt the only way to make his parents proud, was to try to study magic, like his father. Though some of the concepts were lost to him, magic seemed to naturally flow from him.
When presented with the exam, his father on the panel of judges, he recalls the words he recited, and gathers the energy to form his own spell. The results of this magic was unexpected, surprising, and terrifying to the judges, his father reacting the worst. He didn't simply cast a spell, but he formed one of his own making with nothing but sheer will. Outraged at what his son did, he calls for one of the judges to banish the child. Stark tries to plead with his father to "just listen" and explain himself. The ensuing argument leads to Stark being forced from his parents home, as well as school, and make his way on his own, as well as the discovery that somehow he was different.
He vowed to himself that he'd find out why he is what he is, and had tattooed the magic that was spoken to him in his dreams. He held this as a reminder of his father, and his pain. Quickly finding himself with little coin, he sold his 'talent' to a couple clients. Just enough to get some basic gear, and passage on the caravan to Sandpoint.
