Nagaji History:

The nagaji of the current world are similar to their historic appearance and abilities, but the background is far more tragic than it was before.

The naga (and their nagaji servitors) were already in decline from the loss of their deities during the Divine Wars. The sinking of Quormet devastated all of the naga colonies hidden away there, further reducing the influence and scale of the shrinking naga empire. The naga, as any sort of empirical and political force, collapsed during the Wild Magic era when many of the sacred naga artifacts that remained became overloaded with arcane and divine energy which released into horrific explosions that toppled head government buildings and fell many of the leaders bearing said relics. Few of the leading naga survived these explosions, leaving their empire effectively leaderless.

The nagaji, while not stupid, were never experienced with running a government outside of the scope of villages and ultimately civil war broke out. One faction wanted to continue to run things as their naga leaders did, while the others wished to run simple communities, seeing no benefit to the lifestyle that was in decline and lead to the current state. The short war left many nagaji fleeing their ancient homelands while the rest began the burden of recreating their society.

Unfortunately, while the nagaji (and even the nagas themselves) were not noted to be openly evil, the rough state of affairs at the time found many to be scorned and tossed out of villages. Small pockets of families formed in more desolate areas, living simple lives on their farmsteads. Some desperate souls took to banditry and mercenary groups, using their physique and imposing figures to lead their darkened lives. And finally, a small number did find communities who accepted the nagaji strength for farm tasks and slowly integrated the refugees into their societies.

Thus, the nagaji are still a curiosity to many; the stupid or bigoted of the world see them as downtrodden lizard men while the few who do spend the time to meet and understand them find the remnants of a once proud race trying to find their place in this savage world.

Sritaro's Background/Goals:

Like the nagaji race, Sritaro's life started off with tragedy. His family lived with a few others of their kind in a set of homesteads about 5 miles from a nearby city. Life was rough for them, but their strength to plow and farm their fields afforded enough to sustain them.

Unfortunately, their isolation from the protection of the city made them prime targets for a roving band of goblins. They struck during the dusk hours, while the families were at supper, throwing torches and flaming bottles at the wooden huts. Sritaro's mother quickly hid her child in a root cellar before trying to put out the flames engulfing their home. Sritaro couldn't see much, but the sounds of the goblins' maniacal laughter was heard among the screams of the people he knew as family. Smoke slowly crept down into the cellar and the young nagaji succumbed to the decreasing air and fell unconscious.

The next morning, he awoke in a rough stupor, the muffled sound of voices and the scent of burnt wood and flesh bringing him back to his senses. A female human in bright armor was holding him, exclaiming one was alive. Sritaro began surveying his surroundings, noticing the embers that remained of his home and the charred masses on the ground. The female knight held the boy close as he wept as the other knights gave the deceased a proper burial.

The knights, at that point, were in an unusual situation. They couldn't leave the boy alone, but they knew that the local orphanage, already at capacity, couldn't handle more children. Lady Espiana, who found the nagaji survivor, felt that the only recourse for them to take care of the lad for the time being, until another nagaji family could be found to raise him.

Sritaro was allowed to gather what few items survived the fire before departing with the knights. This included one of his father's cloaks in the cellar, his mother's locket stashed in a half-melted lockbox, and the Serpent's Tail, a unique weapon of the nagaji that his family had passed down.

Unbeknownst to the knights, Sritaro had a gift of healing. This came into play a week in the aftermath of the knight's raid against the goblins. Moving to remove the evil creatures to prevent other attacks, Lady Espiana held off several of the creatures while the others slew the leader. However, she fell to her wounds at the end of the battle, bleeding from a series of slices and arrows into her body. Before her brethren could apply any healing aid, Sritaro laid his scaly hands upon Espiana and stabilized her wounds. Seeing this only as a sign from the gods, the knights, Lady Espiana especially, adopted the yong nagaji.

At first shy and sullen, Sritaro eventually took to his new family like a weed. Seeing the sights and people as he travelled with the roaming knights helped pass the pain of losing his family and home and the knights treated him as one of their own. While he wasn't the brightest, he learned common and learned about the knight's patron, the goddess Pelina as they believed that the nagaji boy is blessed with her touch for healing. Sritaro was educated in proper etiquette and how to talk and reach others. He was taught arms and how to don armor and learned how use his family weapon Serpent's Tail on his own (a task made much easier with his naturally rougher hide). When he was older, he earned his keep by taking up blacksmithing, repairing the knights armor and weapons as well as producing farming tools and other useful metalwork for villages the knights would visit. But most of all, Sritaro picked up his adopted mother's grace and penchant for aiding others.

Now as a adult, Sritaro travels specifically to spread hope and help those who need it. Thanks to his well-developed, strong physique, he's not afraid to step into combat, but sees violence as a necessary means only when diplomacy fails or the aggressor's actions would lead to immediate harm. On that note, he's passionate to help others and is quick to step in if he perceives somewhat being hurt. Ultimately, he wants to do good because it is the right thing to do.

Sritaro Now:

Since being assigned to clear out the bandits and protect the outlying villages around Tuven, Sritaro has picked up much in his short time. His time spent with his new allies is starting to influence how he sees the world and how his actions have an affect on them. The half-orc Morbak and the elf Ha'el prove to be the most influential in questioning his original vows to Pelina; the wisdom of the elder dragon Rogforo has only confirmed it. Thus, he is starting to view himself as a protectorate using his gifts from Pelina ensure the safety of his companions while they set about securing the roads around the Tuven region.

Paladin Code:

  • Never strike in cold blood and never strike a downed foe
  • Always provide aid when able; an enemy now may become a friend tomorrow if given mercy
  • To give up ones life for a friend or ally should never be given a second thought if it is to be done

Appearance:

Sritaro is a large, muscular creature, covered in green scales that fade in color towards his chest. His imposing size is offset by wide, toothy grin that looks more humorous than frightening. Standing around 7 feet in height, he is donned in well-cared chainmail with a painted golden sun on the chestpiece of the armor. Sritaro's yellow eyes shine with a calming warmth, matching that of his patron deity Pelina.
