About Someone in the world
My tips for playing a great PBP character.
Interact with the world and the things in it. React to objects or weather or sounds that are described. Also, in general, you can even add something to the environment if it is on-theme and has no mechanics.
Interact with the other player characters and NPCs. We are telling this story together. The other players want to be able to bring their characters out, but will need something or someone to interact with in order to do that.
It really is very hard, if not impossible, to be too interactive of a character. Some tips specifically for that:
Avoid silent abilities. Class features and other abilities are a core part of your character and are used a lot. If you have the choice between using it in a way that is noticeable to the other players, or in a way that no one will be able to see - choose the first. That will automatically and regularly create interaction hooks for the other characters to use. As an example, I was playing a PF1 Medium. I decided to have the spirits be unheard, but my character would talk to them out loud - so the effect was like hearing one half of a phone conversation.
Express your personality regularly. Similar to silent abilities, try to avoid a silent personality. Comment on things out loud, rather than just mentally to yourself only. If you are going to react to something without actually saying anything, describe your expressions or body language of the character so that other players can visualize it and the characters have the opportunity to react to it. As an extreme example, for that same PF1 Medium I chose a unicode character to represent the facial expression of listening to someone speaking that the rest of the group couldn't hear - and would post that unicode symbol into my gameplay posts just like I would with spoken words.
Add an adverb. Don't just walk. Walk quickly. Walk silently. Walk grudgingly. Walk proudly.
Use a more expressive verb. Don't just walk. Skip. Sidle. Slink. Stomp. Trudge. Wander. Meander.
